Assignment 3- Pitch Letter
February 15, 2015
Chicago Magazine- Chicago is a monthly magazine extension by the Chicago Tribune. It
revolves around lifestyle and human-interest stories, includes features and reviews of
restaurants, travel, fashion and theatre from or nearby Chicago. In 2004, it received the
National Magazine Award for General Excellence and is part of the City and Regional
Magazine Association
The strategic objective of this pitch letter is to generate interest in covering the Anthony
Rizzo Family Foundations Cook Off for Cancer. Because Chicago Magazine focuses
mainly on human-interest stories, this would be a good opportunity to feature the event,
which is not only social, but also benefits, a good cause.
Key Message: The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation is holding their third annual Cook
Off for Cancer, a fundraising event intended to raise money for cancer research. This
event combines cooking from well-known local chefs and participation from Cubs
players themselves to create a night of fun for families and baseball fans alike.

Dear Joe,
The Chicago Cubs have endured a rocky lead, a few major comebacks, and a neverending scrutiny over their rookie players. Its only May. However amidst all of this, they
have maintained one constant: Anthony Rizzo. If the Cubs are going to have an MVP
candidate, it's going to be their undisputed leader. Aside from being a leader on the field,
Rizzo has also proven to be a philanthropist and inspiration to many.
Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and his foundation, The Anthony Rizzo
Family Foundation, will hold their third annual Cook Off for Cancer on May 14, 2015
at Revel Downtown, 440 W Randolph St, Chicago, IL 60606.
Rizzo is well known for his Cubs baseball career, but his philanthropic work with the
childrens hospital makes him popular among families and locals. The Foundation is run
entirely by the Rizzo family, close friends, and Rizzos management team, while Rizzo
oversees and provides leadership.
Local, well-known chefs will compete to create the most unique version of a traditional
ballpark dish. Rizzo and his Cubs teammates will act as servers, giving fans the
opportunity to interact with their favorite players.
The money raised will continue to support the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundations
mission to fund cancer research and financially support childhood cancer patients. As a
cancer survivor, Rizzo is personally invested in this event and it will be evident in his
address.
As a Chicagoan, I especially enjoyed your piece on the late Ernie Banks, How Ernie
Banks Went from Unimpressive to Baseball Legend. Your experience covering
Chicago sports makes you the perfect writer for this event. First-hand interviews from
Anthony Rizzo, his family, and attendees of the cook off will further enhance your story.
