THE DEATH OF LOVE IN OUR SOCIETY

The issue of love is unarguably the most misused word in our society today. Also, it may be one
of the most used words in our society today. But the fact still remains that majority of those that
use this word misuse it. This is mainly apparent in our boy-girl relationship, boy-sugar mummy
relationship and girl-sugar daddy relationship. Indeed, true love has been turned into sensual
gratification. With this, it is now difficult to experience true love in any relationship.
Similarly, it is gladdening to recall how one man from my village got married to seven wives just
because of love. For him, some of his wives would have remained spinster if he had not married
them. In that polygamous family, unity and sacrifice was the spotlight. They cooked with the
same pot and ate from the same bowl. With this, it shows that true love existed in that family.
In the same way, some of our aged parents really enjoyed this ideal love during their youthful
age and some are still enjoying it. In some occasions, we have heard and even seen were an old
man will die, and because his wife thinks she cannot survive without the husband, she also dies.
That really shows how attached and affectionate the aged couples were.
However, do we still have people that can sacrifice what they have for their loved ones? Though
it is possible that such people still exists in our society today, but the question says why should
we kill love? In August 2011, we heard over the radio that one woman from Akure poured acid
on her husband, because she caught him with another woman. Also, in Daily Sun Newspaper of
10th July 2011, we saw were a young man used machete to design the body of his girlfriend,
because he suspected that the girl was cheating on him. These and many other such stories have
characterized the love story of our time.
Besides, why should a young lady of 18 years make love with a man of 60 years? It might be
very difficult for some reasonable and responsible people to conceive this, but it is happening in
our society today; all in the name of sugar-daddy. A man making love with a girl that can be his
grandchild! Does that not show that some of us have killed love and are now trying to bury love?
What a generation! Also, why on earth should a young man of 20 years make love with a woman
of 65 years? Is this young man not ripe to be called the womans grandson? These are really
heartbreaking stories. And some of our parents are not helping matters in this regard.

Then again, in any society where the leaders have refused to lead, calamities will prevail. Also in
any family where the parents have refused to parent the children, indiscipline and immoral acts
will triumph.
Interestingly, the focus of this essay, which is love, happens to be the summary of Christs
mission on earth. Because of love, they nailed Him on the cross and He died. Because of love,
He washed away our sins and brought salvation. These and many other incidents are what Christ
did to express His love on us. Also, over the ages, some writers have represented and presented
love in an ideal form. In some books of the New Testament, like in 2 Corinthians, we see how
love was beautifully presented as the greatest of all virtues. That is to show that it is love that
will only make the world go higher, if it is properly used.
To sum it up, though it has vamoosed from the consciousness of many Nigerians that true love is
conceivable, we have to break the kegs of those fake-love tappers and replace it with the ideal
love that is as pure and scented as the early morning palm wine. To realize this, we have to
understand ourselves and then accept this responsibility together. Then, when this task is
achieved, we shall all surface to celebrate the resurrection of love in our lives.
