(1992), Lausanne, Switzerland (1994), Tsukuba, Japan (1996), Dresden, Germany (1998), Estes Park, USA (2000),
Beijing, China (2002), Leuven, Belgium (2004), Hawaii, USA (2006), Sendai, Japan (2008), Guimaraes, Portugal
(2010) and Beijing, China (2012).

Scope & Topics

Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) are
non-uniform materials which are designed with
embodied continuous spatial variations in
composition and microstructure for the specific
purpose of adjusting their thermal, structural,
mechanical, biological or functional response to
specific application conditions. They are
characterized by spatially varied microstructures
created by non-uniform distributions of the
reinforcement phase with different properties,
sizes and shapes, as well as, by interchanging the
role of reinforcement and matrix materials in a
continuous manner.
These multi-phase materials can cover a range
of scales of space and time, and are best
understood through a comprehensive multiphysics
and multiscale approach. Ultimately, the same
material can perform in an adjusted manner to
different solicitations, displaying adequate
mechanical, thermal, electromagnetic, chemical or
biologic responses, configuring a so called
multifunctional behavior.
These materials are currently at the forefront
of materials research, receiving worldwide
attention. They have a wide range of application
including,
for
example,
biomedical,
biomechanics,
automotive,
aerospace,
mechanical, civil, nuclear, and naval engineering
applications. New applications are continually
being discovered and developed.

Multifunctional

Traditionally, research in mechanics of materials

has focused on the understanding of mechanical
properties and the interaction between such properties. In
the recent past, this type of research has been augmented
by investigation on multiphysics questions where
research is concerned with not only the mechanical
function but also with thermal, electric, magnetic and
chemical fields and the coupling of these fields to
mechanics. Fundamental insights on mechanics and
multiphysics of materials then enable to underpin
multifunctional structures and devices in advanced
engineering application domains including, but not
limited to, sensors, active structures, energy harvesting
and energy storage systems. This talk will attempt to
provide a (limited) review of selected recent and
emergent developments in this field of research. The

Functionally Graded Materials: from a scientific

concept to real life applications across different
material classes
Prof. Monika Willert-Porada
In nature the concept of functionality gradation
evolved from material and energy efficient design
principles, developed upon evolution of flora and fauna.
Opposite to this, the concept of man-made functionally
graded materials originally was driven by the need to
optimize properties of materials such as to enable multifunctionality not achievable by ordinary composite
materials. In view of the presently very vivid discussion
of material and energy efficiency of man-made products
time is ripe to merge the technical motivation and the
lessons learned from nature about material and energy
efficiency of materials and structures. This should give a
strong impact on implementation of the scientific
concept of functionality gradation towards real life
applications. As examples of such applications among
others the following topics will be covered: optical glass
lenses with a gradient of index of refraction for
miniaturized optics; numerous polymer light weight
structures with a gradient of density and stiffness, and
unique electric and magnetic properties, and fully
metallic electromagnetic injectors with a gradient of
magnetic properties for simplified and material efficient
design of injection systems for combustion engines. The
talk will address technology aspects, processing issues
and future directions of development of energy and
material efficient functionally graded materials and
structures.

Bioinspired Design of Functionally

Structures
Prof. Winston Oluwole Soboyejo

Graded

This talk presents some examples of recent efforts

to develop multi-scale concepts for the bioinspired
design of multifunctional structures. Three sources of
bioinspiration are considered. The first considers the
bioinspired design of robust dental layers. Inspired by
the funtionally graded structure of the dento-enameljunction (DEJ) in natural teeth, multi-scale mechanics
approaches are used to design dental multilayers with
reduced stress concentrations and crack driving forces.
The insights from these studies are then used to guide the
design and fabrication of functionally graded dental
multilayers with improved robustness. The functionally
graded structure of bamboo is considered as the second
source of bioinspiration. In this case, multi-scale
experiments are used to obtain measurements of
mechanical properties (Young's Moduli hardness and
strength) at the nano-, micro- and macro- scales. The
measurements are then incorporated into multi-scale
models for the prediction of crack growth resistance. The
predictions from the models are shown to be consistent
with measurements of crack growth resistance in
different orientations. The implications of the results are
then discussed for the design of layered structures with
improved crack growth resistance. Finally the third
example considers the layered structure of tortoise shells.
Idealized and actual layered geometries are modelled
using a combination of analytical and computational
models. The mechanical properties of the layered
structures are also obtained using a combination of nano
indentation, micro- testing and macro- testing
techniques. The measurements are then incorporated into
models that provide insights for the design of
protective/armour structures.

The development of functionally graded materials

with a high melting point difference for extreme
environment application
Prof. Zhangjian Zhou
Extreme environment applications which meet very
different and extreme local demands in view of high
thermal load, corrosion and mechanical load require the
development of functionally graded materials (FGMs)
via the combination of materials with very different
properties. Such materials often differ strong in there
melting points, while the large melting point difference
and no overlap of sintering temperature ranges make it
difficult to fabricate this kind of FGM with a full
compositional distribution (from 0 to 100%). Thus the
special FGMs with a high melting point difference open
a challenge for the selection of suitable fabrication
technologies. In this work an overview of the current
knowledge and more recent advances on the design,
fabrication and characterization of the FGMs with a high
melting point difference will be presented. Three kinds
of typical FGMs were investigated. They are metal/metal
FGMs without reaction between each other (such as
W/Cu FGM), metal/metal FGMs composed by reactable
materials (such as W/Fe FGM) and ceramic/metal FGMs
(such as SiC/Cu FGM). A novel one-step fast sintering
technology named as the resistance sintering under ultrahigh pressure was developed to fabricate these kinds of
FGMs with a full compositional distribution (from pure
high melting point material to pure low melting point
material). FGMs with more than 97% theoretical density
have been successfully fabricated without the addition of
any sintering additives only after 1 minute sintering.
Microstructure analysis showed that the good grading
composition of all FGMs have been obtained, which
indicated that the designed composition distribution of
the FGM can be preserved very well. Thermal shock test
in air demonstrated that the grading at the interface
between W and Cu is effective for the reduction of
thermal stress. The sintering mechanism was
investigated. Basic mechanical property and thermal
physical property of the fabricated FGMs were
characterized. A critical discussion on the current
challenges and promising routes for future developments
in these systems were also presented.

New Paradigms in Multi-Scale Modeling for

Integrated Computational Materials Science &
Engineering (ICMSE)
Prof. Somnath Ghosh
The Integrated Computational Materials Science &
Engineering or ICMSE initiative entails integration of
information across length and time scales for all relevant
materials phenomena and enables concurrent analysis of
manufacturing, design, and materials within a holistic
system. Computational Multi-scale modeling involving
Mechanics of Materials plays an important role in this
integration. This talk will discuss two related thrusts in
spatial and temporal multi-scale computational modeling
of deformation, failure and fatigue of structural
materials. The first thrust area is on crystal plasticity
finite element (CPFE) modeling of polycrystalline
metals and alloys (e.g. titanium alloys) for predicting
cyclic deformation leading to fatigue. Image-based
crystal plasticity FEM models are developed,
incorporating statistically equivalent distribution
functions of grain morphology and crystallographic
orientations from data obtained from orientation imaging
microscopy. A grain-based crack nucleation model
evolves from considerations of energy needed to open a
free surface in a hard grain surrounded by dislocation
pileup in neighboring soft grains. A wavelet based multitime scale methodology (WATMUS) is developed to
significantly reduce the computational time in cyclic
loading and deformation till crack initiation. The
resulting finite element scheme is able to allow
simulations to continue for a large number of cycles to
fatigue crack nucleation. The second thrust area will
summarize activities on concurrent multi-scale modeling
of ductile failure in multi-phase materials such as cast
aluminum alloys. Modules developed include: (i) multiscale characterization based preprocessor; (ii)
microstructural analysis module for ductile fracture; and
(iii) homogenization-based continuum damage model for
macroscopic analysis modules. Effective micromechanical
modeling,
incorporating
particle
fragmentation and ductile failure through matrix
cracking, is accomplished by an adaptive, locally
enriched Voronoi Cell finite element method or LEVCFEM. Adaptive schemes and mesh refinement
strategies are developed to create a hierarchy of
computational sub-domains with varying resolution in
the multi-scale model.

Interfaces with Layered and Graded Interphasial

Zones in Particulate Composites
Prof. Glaucio H. Paulino
When a particle inclusion is embedded in a polymer
matrix, the polymer tends to adsorb on the surface of the
inclusion. The effect of this zone may result in a graded
or heterogeneous interphasial zone between the particle
and the polymer often referred to as bound rubber. The
extent and composition of this zone depends on a
number of factors, including the surface area and surface
treatment of the particle, as well as the level of mixing
and age of the composite. Studies on the failure of
particle reinforced polymers have indicated that, when
the interphase is stiffer than the surrounding matrix,
there is a lower tendency for cracks to develop in this
region. On the other hand, when the surface chemistry of
the particles leads to softening of the surrounding matrix,
the probability of cracks/debonding developing in the
interphasial region increases. There has been much work
done on the debonding process of particle reinforced
composite materials under small deformations, but in
recent years the interest in finite deformation debonding
has increased. In this study, we present a threedimensional model, using cohesive zone elements
(CZEs) to account for the nonlinear debonding process
between the particles and the interphase, to simulate the
behavior of these composites under finite deformations.
The nonlinear relation used for the cohesive model is the
consistent, potential-based PPR (Park-Paulino-Roesler)
model (Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids,
JMPS 57(6):891-908, 2009). Representative results are
provided to elucidate the multiscale behavior of soft
particulate composites, including verification and
validation arguments.

Carbon-based nanocomposites and functionally

graded materials
Prof. Akira Kawasaki
The
concept
of
functionally
graded
materials(FGMs), proposed in Japan in 1984, has been
inspiring researchers worldwide to effectively
manipulate and combine irreconcilable properties and
functionalities of conventional materials to fabricate a
new generation of advanced composites for a huge realm
of challenging applications. In order to extend design
and applications of FGMs, carbon-based nanomaterials
are considered as promising candidate for grading agents
with novel multifunctional characteristics and offer to
fabricate
advanced
FGMs
with
remarkable
multifunctional properties. Recent advances in carbon
based nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes and
grapheme as well as their hybrids and composites will be
summarized and the possibility as grading agents for
multifunctional FGM structure will be presented.
