COLLECTION

OF

MEDALLIONS
THE

NUMISMATIC

IN THE

AMERICAN

SOCIETY
Joan M. Fagerlie

(Plates VII-XVIII)

With the recent bequest of Adra M. Newell that contained eight

medallions and with other accessions made in the past fewyears, the
Society's collection of Roman and Byzantine medallions now totals
pieces. Several of these are apparently unique: No. 7 of
forty-three
Lucilla, Nos. 22 and 25 from the Arras hoard and No. 39 of Valentinian I. Others are variants of published types: No. 1 of Antoninus
Pius, No. 23 of Diocletian, No. 29 of Constantine I and No. 35 of
Constantius Gallus. Of special interest also is the gold medallion of
Magnentius, No. 37. Many of the medallions have been published
previously in various places but it seemed worthwhileto bring them
all togethernow in one place. Since every piece is illustrated, descriptions have been kept to a minimum. Referencesare to Gnecchi, Cohen and Roman Imperial Coinage and to publicationswheretheseparticular pieces have appeared. The abbreviations used are as follows:
