General

Specifications
General'
Rider provides a powerful environment for
delivering safety critical procedures directly to
the point of work, and for developing the
experience and competence of crews in safety
critical businesses. Rider acts similar to a
navigation system in a car, providing
supervisors and crews direct guidance on
procedures and hazards. It is a navigation
system for your work processes.
Rider can be shipped with a pre-defined
database of industry best practices. Rider is
part of the Solutions portfolio of Yokogawa.

Key'Benefits'
The Rider suite can be applied to many
industries in which the following benefits have
been identified:

Rider

Better company reputation / competitive

advantage
Demonstrable compliance for all
stakeholders

Functionality'
Rider stores and manages safety and quality
critical procedures in a specialized structure
called WayBooks. Based on these
procedures, users can build a full program of
activities, called a TimeLine. The tasks put
on this TimeLine are shown to crews on
special displays at the point of work, targeted
on their roles and responsibilities. Through a
Tuition module, and feedback on actual
execution of procedures in the field, Rider
supports the development and verification of
competence of crews.
Content Management Module

Financial
Reduction in operating costs
Reduction in training costs
Reduced legal disputes and costs
Reduced insurance costs
Operational
Improved well quality
Easier permit and contract awards
More competitive day rates
Reduction in incidents and major accidents
Increase in hands-on-tool-time of
contractors
Remote online monitoring of all operations
Improved data analysis capability
Staff development
Increase knowledge retention of key
information by crews, from 5 10% to 70%
25-50% faster career progression for key

Demonstrable field compliance to key
procedures and regulations

The Rider Content Management Module is

at the heart of the Rider system. Through a
process called Riderization key procedural
information is combined and re-worked into a
proprietary WayBook structure and stored in
a powerful database that forms the starting
point for Tuition, Planning, Execution of tasks
and the development of Competence. The
Content Management module allows domain
expert to manage WayBooks and assign
roles, hazards, documents and other key
information to every task. In the Content

Management module, sub-procedures are

combined into Procedures, which form the
building blocks for the Planning Module.
Planning Module

Execution Module

Through the planning module the user can

create a complete program of activities for e.g.
the drilling of an oil- or gas-well. The user can
drag Procedures out of the WayBook library
onto the TimeLine in sequence, and Rider will
set up all parameters, controls and roles for
safely executing these activities.
Tuition Module
In its most basic configuration, the Tuition
Module gives professionals access to the
Rider Content Library. Just the way the
library is organized alone gives a clear
oversight of topics that need to be mastered in
a specific field. Users can access the
underlying information for specific tasks
contained in procedures, such as images,
hazard information, or roles and
responsibilities. Rider asks the user to confirm
that the procedure has been read and
understood, which gives the starting point for
the experience registration of the user.

The Execution Module is typically run on a

robust, explosion proof touch screen device.
Multiple devices are positioned around the
workplace, such as a drilling rig.
Crewmembers log onto the device using e.g.
an RFID card, and it will show them the
specific set of tasks assigned to their role.
Crewmembers can verify execution of these
tasks, or request additional information. For
supervisors, the Execution module gives
overview of the activities of other
crewmembers, and the ability to start and stop
procedures.
Competence Management Module
In Rider, each user is assigned a Rider
Competence Compass. This gives an
overview of the competence status of each
user in relation to each of the sub-procedures
contained in the Rider WayBook Library.
A user can be classified as Not Competent,
meaning he is not authorized to execute this
particular sub-procedure, Conditionally
Competent, meaning he can execute it under
supervision, or Competent. Rider tracks the
experience record of users and will adjust the
2

competence status of each user based on his

interaction with the system and feedback from
supervisors. The Competence Module can be
integrated with an external HR/Competence
management system to also take into account
external certifications, assessments and
trainings.

assigned to each task

The competence status of each user is shown

during execution, and in Toolbox talks,
enabling the supervisor to make optimal
decisions about the task allocations of his
crew. For crewmembers, the competence
module provides a clear, inspiring and
professionally relevant mechanism for
competence and career development.

Operating'Environment'

The Rider world is split in 2 distinct areas. One

is the corporate area; the other is the Rig area.
Both areas serve distinct purposes.
Corporate Area
This area is usually located at or near the
corporate head office, and might be part of the
existing client infrastructure.
The Content Management-, Planning- and
Tuition modules are usually deployed in the
corporate area. This area houses the Rider
Windows 2012R2 server that contains a
Microsoft SQL Server 2012R2 (SQL 2014 in
near future) DBMS and IIS hosting the Rider
application. Optionally the Rider server can be
hosted in the cloud (Windows Azure, PAAS
solution). This cloud deployment is a viable
choice when there is no Rig area, and the
Rider solution is used for WayBook
maintenance and Tuition purposes.
The training server depicted in the picture
above is a client specific option that can be
added to the Rider solution, allowing a
scaled down Rig being available inside the
corporate area for training purposes.
Rig Area
This area is typically located at a remote
location, on site of a drilling platform, where
internet connectivity is sparse or even
nonexistent.
The Rig area typically houses the planning and
Execution modules. This area always consists
of a physical Rider Windows 2012R2 server,
IIS + MSSQL DBMS that is kept in sync by a
satellite uplink connection. The data exchange
between the two areas is performed
asynchronously in the background, so it does
not block Rig operations.
4

When connectivity is temporary lost, the rig

area can continue to work uninterrupted.
Specialized additional modules can be added
to the rider solution as an option, like the POB
(Personnel On Board) system, and the RES
(Rig Entry System), allowing interfacing
between the role based Rider content and
the actual crew members on board, performing
these roles.
Devices
All you need to interact with the Rider system
is a device capable of running Internet
Explorer 10 or Google Chrome version
34.0.1847.137m or higher with network
connectivity.

Connectivity'

In the rig area several explosion proof touch

screen devices (called RIS Rig Interactive
Station) are available at key positions on the
drilling site. Depending on the customer needs
these devices can be connected either wired
or wireless to the Rider server. In the wireless
option several access points will cater for
unrestricted yet secured access to local
resources through the Rig Interactive Stations,
as well as ATEX approved mobile devices. As
an option to the wired connection, it is also
possible to provide a local access point on a
specific location to cater for local use of mobile
devices.
