, "Effect of composition, environmental factors and
cement-lime mortar coating on concrete carbonation, Materials and Structures, 1992, 25, 293304 .
:
In what follows we will concentrate on this latter case, i.e. on the application of a lime-cement mortar
coating and on its effect on the rate of carbonation. We will consider only lime produced by hydration
of high-calcium quicklime, as that originating from the burning of limestone. Finally, in the following
we will call dry hydrated lime, i.e. Ca(OH)2 without excess water, simply 'lime', and we will denote by I
its weight in the mixture in a water-saturated, surface-dry form.
, CEM I, lime, , CH, C-S-H, :

5-1.15

Provided that its water/cement ratio is relatively low and its lime content high, a lime-cement mortar
coating of the usual thickness (around 20 mm) is found to be an extremely effective means of
postponing or even preventing carbonation-induced corrosion initiation: it postpones the onset of
concrete carbonation by the time required for carbonation to fully penetrate the coating, and it retards
its further penetration into the concrete because atmospheric CO2 has to travel further to reach the
carbonation front.
