Introduction
In this project we will take a look at the innovation that is
technology, without going into much detail, technological
devices have changed our lifestyles and our day to day lives.
2

So much that the past generations cannot relate at all to the

current ones. In addition the prices have dropped down from
the past, for example we can buy a computer that is more
advanced than the ones that were available in the past, like
the computer that NASA used in the Apollo landing, which
only had a fraction of the modern day computers. Likewise,
the current smartphones have capabilities that far surpass
the previous generations of mobile phones. Previously the
only method of interaction with other people was through
dialing them or via text messages. Now however, we are
now able to use the smartphone to video call people, play
video games, take photos and so many other uses in our day
to day lives. However with the advances in handheld
technology, the demands have increased in terms of
processing power, larger application storage, higher camera
pixels and larger screens.

Problem Definition
Smartphones are the most important things that there
was since 2005, In fact they are compared to a pocket
version of a portable computer, having the same processing
power if not more, the same RAM as some low end
computers, the capability of browsing the internet, editing
worksheets and presentations as well as other functions
used in our day to day lives. However, the recent trend has
shown that due to the advancement in the capabilities of
smartphones, they are rivaling computers in gaming as well,
however they have been facing a fatal issue in their
functionality, that flaw is: Battery Life.
As the smartphone industry expands and improves the
smartphones that are released after their predecessors, they

improve the Random Access Memory, the storage options,

the camera quality and processors to name a few fields of
improvements between each generation, however the
smartphone industry has always been lacking in an aspect
we all agree needs improvement and that aspect is the
Battery Life of the current flagship smartphones such as the
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the Xperia Z3, the Samsung Galaxy S5
and Note4, Nexus 6 and OnePlus One to name a few.

Problem Background

Due to the overwhelming capabilities of the

smartphones such as texting, web browsing, photo editing,
simple rendering and so on, it has to take a major toll on how
long it can function on a single full charge cycle and as such,
it has become a frustration to always carry a charger or a
spare battery if your phone has a removable one and has
become a huge issue to some people due to the price of the
first party batteries and portable chargers out of fear of
damaging their phones by third party items.

Objective

The objective of this Problem Based Learning project is

to compare the battery life of the current flagship
smartphones and to find out which of them holds the longest
amount of battery life and the highest amount of charge and
discharge cycles of each phone, to recommend the best one
of the previously mentioned devices with reasonable proof
and evidence to support the claim.

Methodology
Source Of Data
Our Project will rely heavily on Secondary Data
Collected from other journalists and trusted websites due to
the stable facts and the need to find the accurate data
rather than using Primary data which is based on
questionnaires and interviews, which consumes more time
and is based on opinions and the thoughts of other people
(excluding the inventors of the smartphone itself). Hence
why we chose the Secondary Data sources.
Moreover, we shall use the website
http://www.gsmarena.com as our supply of data and
information regarding our PBL due to its authenticity and
unbiased data relating to any said smartphone and its
capabilities.

Data analysis tools

As for our data analysis, we shall use the P(t)two
tails function via excel to answer our H0 and H1
hypothesis respectively.
H0 : Smartphone battery life is less than 1500 mAh
H1: Smartphone battery life is more than 1500 mAh

Data Presentation

Graph 1
The given graph represents the possible amount of stand by time
of the given flagship smartphones with a full battery and shows
the amount of time it could last against other flagship
smartphones. Moreover it shows that the Smartphones with the
highest amount of stand by battery time are the iPhone 6 Plus
and Nexus 6 with both of them staying up to 24 hours.

Graph 2
The second graph gives you the capacity of each smartphones
battery and how many (mAh) does it allocate inside, as provided
below to find out which of the smartphones has the most
capacity in the terms of battery and which phone has the most of
it. Moreover it shows that the smartphone with the highest
Battery Capacity is the Nokia Lumia 1520 with a capacity of 3400
mAh.

Empirical Findings
Findings and Results
As seen in the given graphs, the highest
scoring flagship phone in Stand-By time is the
Motorola/Google Nexus 6 which scores at 24 Hours of stand
by time on 3G connectivity as well as the similarly scoring
iPhone 6 Plus at 24 hours.
However, as for battery life, the highest scoring smartphone
is the Nokia 1520 with a Battery capacity of 3400 mAh which
slightly surpasses the Galaxy Note 4 and Nexus 6, while both
have the same capacity of 3220 mAh.

Conclusion
Our T(two tailed) hypothesis testing has come out with
a result of 8.00134E-06, which we assume is more than 0.05
although we have tried various methods to find another
result that would match the possible results, however due to
the average of our list of mobile phones battery capacity, is

10

marginally more than 1500mAh and hence we believe that

we have made a wrong step somewhere along our research.

Recommendation
As a Problem Based Learning project, we have faced a
few problems. One of the major issues that we had was
conducting the T.Test with two tails, utilizing both Mac and
Windows versions of Microsoft Excel attempting to
incorporate the T.Test to find out whether or not the H(null) is
rejected or left alone and we could not find a solution to the
given issue. moreover it would have been more helpful if the
minimal amount of work is reduced due to the required
amount of work papers, although it would be possible to
reach the maximum amount of papers utilizing the Primary
Data method, however if you are using the Secondary Data it
would be somewhat difficult to do so.
Overall the project could use some alterations in the topics
variety and the amount of maximum group members to
increase work efficiency and reduces the required amount of
work.
