Inspired by the IEEE Real World Engineering Project:


Solid State Lighting for the Developing World

Introduction and Motivation


Abouttwobillionpeopleintheworldsunderdevelopednationsdonothaveaccesstomodern
formsofenergy[1].Handinhandwiththisisthelackofaccesstomodernformsoflighting,
forcingthesepeopletoresorttotechnologies,suchaskerosenewicklampsandcandles.These
devicesarerelativelyexpensive,inefficient,andthegasestheyproduce(suchasCarbon
MonoxideandSulphurDioxide)aredangerous.Whiletakenforgrantedintheworldsdeveloped
nations,thelackofsafeandreliablesourcesoflightafterdarkhasaprofoundnegativeeffecton
thesocioeconomicconditionofpeopleinunderdevelopednations.Withoutadequatelighting,
educationandeconomicdevelopmentprogramssuffer:itisdifficulttoimproveliteracywhen
thereisinsufficientlighttoreadabookorablackboard.Recently,nongovernmental
organizationshavesuggestedthatsolidstatedevices,inconjunctionwithsmallscaleenergy
sources,couldbeusedasanalternativetodevicessuchaskerosenewicklampsorcandles[2].
Thetechnicalchallengeistodevelopaninexpensive,reliable,cleanandsafesourceoflightfor
thosewhocurrentlydonotpossessit.[3]

Project Brief
YourtaskinthisprojectistodesignandcreateaportableLEDdesklamp.Asminimum
requirements,thedesklampmust:

befreestanding
havesufficientlightoutputforreading/writingtaskswithoutcausingeyestrain
beabletooperatewithoutbeingconnectedtoanexternalpowersupply
notexceedaspecifiedcurrentdrawwhilstinoperation.

Foradditionalcredit,thedesklampshould:

beabletorechargedviaanexternalpowersupply(e.g.solarpanel,DCpowersupply)
incorporateadjustablebrightnesstooptimiseenergyconsumption
bebuilttoarobuststandard
