INTRODUCTION
Documentation to support the RA-50 system consists of the following manuals:

RA-50 Chemistry Analyzer Operator's Manual

This service manual is intended for use in the classroom and for servicing systems in the field.
ORGANIZATION OF THE MANUAL
Chapter 1 - Description of the RA-50 System: provides a general description of the system and system
specifications.
Chapter 2 - Operating Procedures: provides system startup flowcharts, brief routine operating procedures,
and procedures for calibrating, and running controls.
Chapter 3 - Methods: Typically, Chapter 3 of a Technical Service Manual provides a brief description of the
standard methods used on the system. In the case of the RA-50 system, however, this information is provided
in the RA-50 System Worksheets Manual (Technical Publication No. TK9-4847-00)
Chapter 4 - Theory of Operation: provides detailed descriptions of the spectrophotometer, electo/mechanical
assemblies, hydraulic devices and printed circuit boards. Each section contains functional diagrams and
tables that can be used to locate electronic and hardware problems when troubleshooting.
Chapter 5 - Installation: Typically, Chapter 5 of a Technical Service Manual provides site survey
requirements, installation procedures, installation checkout procedures, and system acceptance test. In the
case of the RA-50 system, however, this information is provided in Section 2 of the RA-50 Chemistry Analyzer
Operator's Manual.
Chapter 6 - Exerciser Tests: Typically, Chapter 6 of a Technical Service Manual provides procedures for
using the exerciser tests. The RA-50 system, however, is not equipped with an exerciser.
Chapter 7 - Alignments and Adjustments: provides procedures for aligning the electro/mechanical
assemblies.
Chapter 8 - Preventive Maintenance: provides procedures for maintaining optical, hydraulic, and
electro/mechanical devices.
Chapter 9 - Repair and Replacement: provides procedures for disassembly and replacement of specific
subassemblies.
Chapter 10 - Troubleshooting Procedures and Error Messages: provides troubleshooting tables and error
message definitions.
Chapter 11 - Schematic and Interconnect Diagrams: provides interconnect and schematic diagrams.

CHAPTER 1 - SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

GENERAL
The RA-50 system (Figure 1A-1) is a programmable chemistry analyzer capable of providing quantitative
results for 107 different tests in the following categories:

The system consists of the RA-50 Chemistry Analyzer with a plug-in program module and appropriate
SERA-PAK and Technicon RA system diagnostics reagents.
The RA-50 system is programmable for routine or special methods:

Instrument Description

The RA-50 system utilizes two microprocessors and an optical system to obtain accurate and precise test
results. Data output is provided via a 4-line (20 characters each line) display, an internal high performance
40-column thermal tape printer, and a RS-232-C interface for host computer connection.

ANALYZER
The Analyzer allows for two sample handling techniques; flowcell system or disposable cuvette. Both cuvette
types are peltier temperature regulated at 25, 30, or 37, independent of ambient temperature.
A long-life halogen lamp is used as a light source. A condenser with an aperture and a mirror convert the light
to parallel light energy. The light energy passes through the sample cuvette, through one of seven interference
filters, and then onto a photo element with a high sensitivity in the UV range.
An amplifier transforms the current produced by the photo element into voltage. A 12-bit A/D converter
converts the processed analog signals into digital signals. The two microprocessors perform the mathematical
processing, and the results are displayed on the LCD screen and printed by the thermal printer. Comments
and/or messages also are displayed and printed.

WARNINGS FOR USE OF THE FLOWCELL

Urea
Due to reagent carryover, do not perform Urea assay immediately after Iron or Total Bilirubin Single-step
assay. In case it should not be possible, wash the flowcell with 5-mL of distilled water at least four times by
pressing the <Rinse> key.

Due to reagent carryover, do not perform LD assay immediately after AST or ALT assay. Prime the flowcell
with LD working solution, by pressing the <Analyze> key, before performing the first LD assay.

SAFETY NOTES

1.

Protection Class I

2.

The Analyzer has been built and checked according to DIN 57411 Part 1/VDE 0411 Part 1 and IEC
publication 348, "Safety Regulations for Electrical Measuring Instruments." The Analyzer left the factory in
a fully operational condition. In order to preserve this condition, and to ensure safe operation, the user
must observe all warning and caution statements included in the operating manual.

The Analyzer is designed for indoor use. Operating safety is not jeopardized when this Analyzer is
occasionally exposed to temperatures ranging between +50 and -10.

4.

Before setting the power switch to ON, make sure the power source operating voltage and line voltage
correspond.

5.

The power plug may only be plugged into a socket with a ground contact. DO NOT use an extension cord
with a nonfused grounded conductor.

6.

When opening covers or removing parts (exception: you can do it manually), the voltage carrying parts
may lay open when the Analyzer is in the power-on mode. Connecting parts can also be under voltage.

7.

Disconnect the Analyzer from all voltage sources before performing maintenance procedures, changing
parts, or making repairs or adjustments.

8.

Capacitors in the Analyzer can retain an electrical charge after the Analyzer has been disconnected from
all power sources.

9.

When the Analyzer is open and in the power-on mode, do not perform maintenance procedures, change
parts, or make repairs or adjustments. In a circumstance where this work must be done, the field
engineer must be familiar with the dangers.

10. Only use fuses of the type and current rating specified. Do not use repaired fuses. Do not bypass the
fuseholder.
11. If safe operation of the Analyzer can no longer be ensured, set the power switch to OFF and remove the
plug from the electrical outlet. Remove power cord and main fuses.
12. Safe operation is no longer guaranteed when the Analyzer:

is visibly damaged

is not working

has been improperly stored for some time

has been transported under unfavorable conditions

Due to static sensitive components, special precautions should be taken when gaining
access to components within the Analyzer. Standard CMOS handling precautions
should be taken including maintaining same ground potential as system (using wrist
strap).
When soldering is necessary, a low voltage soldering iron must be used.

CHAPTER 2 - OPERATING PROCEDURES

INTRODUCTION
This Chapter describes brief system startup procedures, keyboard functions, system configuration, and
measurement protocols for the RA-50 system.

If the Analyzer is configured to run using flowcell, follow the display instructions for
reagent/calibrator/ sample volume required for measurement. If the Analyzer is
configured to run using disposable cuvettes, refer to publication titled Worksheet
Supplement to the Operators Manual, Technical Publication No. TK9-4847-00.
SYSTEM STARTUP

The following system startup procedure assumes that the system has been installed and configured in
accordance with the installation procedures provided in the RA-50 System Operator's Manual, and that the
system has been shut down by the operator.
1.

Verify the power switch is in the OFF position (the power switch is set to OFF when the red "0" on the
switch is displayed).

The program module can be damaged if inserted when power is ON.

2.

Ensure the program module is securely plugged in.

3.

Verify printer paper is properly installed.

4.

Verify that the voltage indicated on the voltage selector meets local voltage.

5.

Set power switch to the ON position; the software version number and system diagnostic self-test
information are displayed:

The Analyzer automatically checks the printer, data memory, filter wheel, and optical system.

The touch keyboard (Figure 2C-1) is used to actuate all operating functions. Table 2C-1 provides a description
of all keyboard functions.

test.
Indicates program type, enters program changes, inputs new programs, deletes
entire program, or allows program changes.

Selects basic setup options, restores system to default settings, etc.

Terminates printing in progress.

Cancels procedure or test in progress.

Prints available "Help" text.

Paper feed

Advances the printer paper.

QC

Initiates flowcell rinsing.

Labels and stores the next result as a control result.
Initiates printing of stored quality control data.

Absorbance

Selects one of seven available wavelengths for absorbance measurement. Indicates

absorbance measurement for both flowcell and disposable cuvette modes.

Calibrate

Indicates analysis of Standard (if using disposable cuvette mode).

Allows calibration; then specify to retain the old calibration, store the new calibration,
or store the average of old and new calibrations (if using the flowcell mode).

Blank

Initiates analysis of Blank (if using disposable cuvette mode).

Initiates a new test run that uses sample blank values (if using flowcell mode).
Allows analysis of a new reagent blank and stores its value (if using flowcell mode).

Analyze

Indicates program type, enters program changes, inputs new programs, deletes
entire program or program changes.

Temperature Control Circuit (Figure 4C-3)
The temperature control circuit performs the following functions (refer to the paragraph titled "Temperature
Adjustment" in Chapter 5 to perform adjustment of the temperature circuit):

VOLTAGE REFERENCE
Supplies a voltage reference signal to the 25, 30, and 37 potentiometers (R206, R209, and R212,
respectively). The reference voltage is adjustable by R203.

TEMP ADJUST
Allows individual adjustment of the 25, 30, and 37 temperature voltages.

25/30/37 TEMP REFERENCE MUX

Allows routing of the 25, 25, or 37 reference voltage to the temp comparator circuit, as controlled by
the 2-bit TEMPO, TEMP1 temperature select signal from the CPU.

TEMP COMPARATOR
Compares the TEMP REFERENCE signal with the actual SENSOR VOLTAGE to produce the adjustment
signal applied to the temp control circuit.

TEMP CONTROL
Controls the temperature of the Peltier element and generates the TOK0 signal to inform the CPU when
the reference temperature is reached.

PRINTER DRIVER
Provides printhead dot drive and motor drive for the printer.

DISPLAY DRIVER
Drives the LCD display in response to AD0-AD7 data.

DIP SWITCHES
Control selection of the following printer operational parameters:

A0-A19. This 20-bit address is used to access the system program from the EPROM (via X101) and the

Provides bi-directional serial data interface between the D0-D7 data bus and the subsystem PCB.

RS-232 INTERFACE
Provides bi-directional serial data interface between the D0-D7 data bus and the RS-232 connector.

Converts the analog signal from the monitoring amp circuit to an 8-bit digital value that is placed on the
D0-D7 data bus, as controlled by the program interface circuit.
11 MASTER CLOCK
Provides the clock frequency for the CPU.
12 REAL-TIME CLOCK
Keeps real-time for the system.

Converts proportional light current to proportional light voltage.

FEEDBACK NETWORK
Provides feedback to control amplification factor of CURRENT-VOLTAGE CONVERTER.

RELAY
Controls connection of potentiometer R102 as follows:

When energized, R102 is connected across CURRENT-VOLTAGE CONVERTER.

When de-energized, R102 is disconnected.

access to components within the Analyzer. Standard CMOS handling precautions
should be taken including maintaining same ground potential as system (using wrist
strap).
When soldering is necessary, a low voltage soldering iron must be used.

shown on the display, pressing <Enter> after each adjustment. When R102 is adjusted within range, the
display will prompt with "Enter".

Pressing <Enter> when the voltage is not within range will not have any effect. The
operating software will select any filters with overflow and the highest amplitude filter.
10. If R102 is adjusted for an out of range value, repeat steps 7 through 9.

Amplifier Adjustment

To avoid personal injury, set the Analyzer power switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect power cord from power source, then remove power cord from rear of
Analyzer.

Adjust potentiometer R441 to achieve a value of 0.8 +0.2/-0.3V.

If the adjustment in the step above cannot be obtained, adjust potentiometer R102 on
the A/D Converter PCB to obtain a value of approximately 0.8V.

On the CPU PCB connect the (+) probe of a DVM to test point X406 and the (-) probe to test point X411.

Potentiometers R411 and R412 are located on the solder side of the CPU PCB. They
can be adjusted via an access hole in the base plate assembly (R411 is located closest
to the front of the instrument).
4.

If DVM value is 0.2 to 0.3 volts, adjust potentiometer R412 to obtain a value of 0.5 volts (this adjustment
can be obtained in a single step). If the DVM value is not 0.2 to 0.3 volts, adjust potentiometer R411 until
the DVM value is 0.5 volts.

5.

When a value of 0.5 volts is obtained, power the Analyzer OFF, then ON.

LCD Brightness Adjustment

The brightness of the LCD can be adjusted by adjusting potentiometer R202 (as required), located on the
Subsystem PCB. This potentiometer is accessed by removing the service cover (located on the left side under
the cover).

CHAPTER 8 - PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

GENERAL
This Chapter provides preventive maintenance procedures for the RA-50 system.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Instrument Care
8B1
Since the Analyzer contains sensitive electronics and optics, the following precautions should be taken.

Handle the instrument with extreme care. Severe mechanical shocks can disturb internal
connections and damage optics.

Do not smoke near the instrument. Smoke can cause a film to form on optical surfaces. This film will
adversely affect optical transmission.

Do not operate the instrument where it would be subjected to:

Microwaves emitted by therapeutic equipment used in the same room

Direct sunlight or other light source closer than 1 meter

Excessive dust or other particulate matter

High frequency (from other instruments such as centrifuge, etc.)

Excessive humidity or vibrations

Extreme temperature variations

Use the instrument within 15 - 32 (maximum relative humidity, 85% at 30).

Turn the instrument OFF and cover with dust cover when not in use.

If supplied voltage is unstable, do not use the instrument unless it is connected to a quality voltage
stabilizer with a minimum 1 KVA capacity.
Cleaning

POTENTIAL BIOHAZARDOUS MATERIAL

Since the items that are manipulated while performing the following procedure
may have been exposed to human blood, wear protective clothing, gloves, and
safety glasses to avoid possible exposure to a biohazard.

Cleaning Analyzer Exterior And Flowcell Chamber

To avoid personal injury, set the Analyzer power switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect power cord from power source, then remove power cord from rear of
Analyzer.
1.

Clean the exterior of the instrument and flowcell chamber with a lint-free cloth dampened with disinfectant
as explained in the following steps:

Do not allow water to drip into cuvette well or optical system can be damaged.
a.

Disinfectant
Expose the surface to either of the following solutions for 10 minutes*. Remove blood or serum (as
much as possible) prior to disinfection.
0.5% sodium hypochlorite (diluted household bleach, see below)
2% glutaraldehyde

b.

Household bleach
Most household bleach is approximately a 5% solution of sodium hypochlorite. Read the label to
confirm concentration.
To obtain (approximately) 0.5% solution of sodium hypochlorite, dilute household bleach containing
(approximately) 5% sodium hypochlorite as follows:
1 part bleach + 9 parts water = 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution

2.

Dry the instrument using a lint-free cloth.

Cleaning Cuvette Well

Do not allow water to drip into cuvette well or the optical system can be damaged.

Clean the cuvette well with a clean cotton swab dampened with water.
Dry cuvette well using clean, dry cotton swab.

FLOWCELL MAINTENANCE

Never leave flowcell dry. Always keep flowcell filled with distilled water.
Flowcell Rinsing

The flowcell should be rinsed with 5 ml of distilled water after selecting a new test and just prior to use (to avoid
air bubbles). At the end of each day 5 ml of flowcell cleaning solution should be aspirated into the flowcell (with
the <Rinse> key). Allow cleaning solution to remain in flowcell for 2 to 3 minutes, then thoroughly flush flowcell
three (3) times with 5 ml of distilled water (using <Rinse> key).
Aspiration Volume Calibration

The flowcell aspiration volume calibration procedure must be performed under the following conditions:

Upon initial Analyzer set-up

Every six months

After tubings or flowcell replacement

1.

Ensure Analyzer power switch is set to ON position.

2.

From the RA-50 CONFIGURATION menu, select the ASPIRATION ADJUST menu by pressing
<Select>, <5>, then <Enter>.

3.

Place the aspiration tube into a test tube containing exactly 5 ml of distilled water so that the
aspiration tube touches the bottom of the test tube.

Do not keep the <Rinse> key pressed when all water has been aspirated from test tube.
4.

Press and hold the <Rinse> key until all water has been aspirated.

CHAPTER 9 - REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT

9A
INTRODUCTION
This chapter provides repair and replacement procedures for all major assemblies and subassemblies of the
RA-50 system (refer to Figures 9A-1 and 9A-2). References to item numbers in illustrations are provided in
bold face numbers within square brackets (e.g., [4]).

9B

LAMP ASSEMBLY

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the lamp/flowcell chamber covers by pressing the cover notch at the rear of the Analyzer. Lift the
covers away from the Analyzer.

2.

Unplug the lamp assembly connector on the Power Pack PCB by squeezing the narrow sides of the
connector while pulling upward.

3.

Remove the two (2) lamp assembly wires from the wire holder located at the rear of the lamp housing.

4.

Loosen the large knurled head screw [4], located on the left-hand side of the lamp housing, by turning the
screw counterclockwise (refer to Figure 9B-1).

5.

Slide the lamp holding clamp [3] toward the rear of the lamp housing.

To avoid personal injury due to high temperature, do not touch the halogen bulb.
6.

Gently pull the lamp assembly out of the lamp housing.

7.

Insert the new Lamp Assembly (P/N XBD-6559-59) into the lamp housing. Ensure the notch in the lamp
holder [2] is aligned with the pin [1] mounted on the side of the lamp housing.

8.

Slide the lamp holding clamp [3] over the lamp holder as far as possible toward the front of the lamp
housing.

9.

Turn the knurled head screw [4] clockwise to tighten the lamp holding clamp.

10. Attach the lamp assembly connector to the Power Pack PCB connector.
11. Place the two (2) lamp wires into the wire holder located at the rear of the lamp housing.

Ensure the lamp assembly wires cannot come in contact with the cooling fan. Adjust
wires in the wire holder as necessary.
12. Reinstall the lamp/flowcell chamber covers. Ensure tubing is properly routed beneath the flowcell
chamber cover.

MAIN COVER ASSEMBLY (Refer to Figure 9C-1.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.

POTENTIAL BIOHAZARDOUS MATERIAL

Since the items that are manipulated while performing the following procedure
may have been exposed to human blood, wear protective clothing, gloves, and
safety glasses to avoid possible exposure to a biohazard.
1.

Remove the lamp/flowcell chamber covers [2] by pressing the cover notch [1] at the rear of the Analyzer.
Lift the covers away from the Analyzer.

2.

Remove the yellow clamp [3] that holds the aspiration tube [4] by lifting the clamp upward.

3.

Move the aspiration tube and attached flowcell to the rear of the Analyzer (do not disconnect tubing from
pump assembly).

4.

Loosen the five (5) Phillips head screws located in the recessed holes in bottom of Analyzer chassis.

A blue ribbon cable connects the CPU PCB (mounted on the Analyzer chassis) to the
Subsystem PCB (mounted to the main cover assembly).
5.

Slowly lift the main cover [5] upward, then carefully unplug the blue ribbon connector located in the center
of the CPU board.

6.

Reinstall the main cover by performing the previous steps in reverse order.

FILTER WHEEL ASSEMBLY (Refer to Figures 9D-1 and 9D-2.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled, "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Loosen the two (2) Phillips head screws [1] that secure the filter wheel cover [2], then carefully lift the
cover upward.

Refer to Figure 9D-2 when performing the following steps.

3.

Disconnect the ribbon cable [3] from the A/D Converter PCB [4].

4.

Remove the four (4) Phillips head screws [5] and flat washers [6] that secure the Filter Wheel Assembly to
the base assembly.

5.

Slowly lift the Filter Wheel Assembly away from the mounting base, then disconnect the motor leads [9]
plug and coding PCB ribbon cable [7] from the CPU PCB [8].

6.

Install the new Filter Wheel Assembly by performing the previous steps in reverse order.

When installing the new Filter Wheel assembly, insert a 0.1-mm shim between the filter
wheel and the optics block. Tighten holding screws, then remove shim.

Motor (Filter Wheel) Assembly (Refer to Figure 9D-3.)

1.

Remove the Filter Wheel Assembly (refer to the paragraph titled, "Filter Wheel Assembly" in Chapter 9).

2.

Loosen the motor clamp slot head screw [3].

3.

Push the motor [5] through the motor clamp [6] toward the filter wheel side of the assembly.

4.

Remove the spacer sleeve [4] from the motor and place sleeve onto new Motor Assembly (P/N
XBD-6010-60).

5.

Slide new motor into motor clamp. If necessary, spread motor clamp using the blade of a small
screwdriver.

6.

Align the motor gear [1] with the filter wheel gear [2] and ensure the motor sleeve [4] is centered beneath
the motor clamp [6].

7.

Carefully tighten the motor clamp screw [3].

8.

Reinstall the Filter Wheel Assembly (refer to the paragraph titled, "Filter Wheel Assembly" in Chapter 9),
and perform steps in reverse order.

Coding PCB (Refer to Figure 9D-4.)

Remove the Filter Wheel Assembly (refer to the paragraph titled "Filter Wheel Assembly" in Chapter 9).

Before removing the Encoder Assembly, note the exact placement of the assembly to
ensure the correct orientation of the replacement assembly.
2.

Remove the four (4) Phillips head screws [3] that secure the Coding PCB [2] to the two sides of the
mounting bracket [1].

3.

Attach the new Coding PCB (P/N XBD-6007-99) using the four (4) Phillips head screws removed in step
2.

4.

Reinstall the Filter Wheel Assembly (refer to the paragraph titled, "Filter Wheel Assembly" in Chapter 9),
and perform steps in reverse order.

Filter Wheel (Refer to Figure 9D-5.)

1.

Remove the Filter Wheel Assembly (refer to the paragraph titled, "Filter Wheel Assembly" in Chapter 9).

2.

Loosen the two (2) setscrews that secure the coding wheel [2] to the filter wheel shaft [3], then remove the
coding wheel from the filter wheel shaft.

DO NOT attempt to remove the filter wheel from the filter wheel shaft. The filter wheel
shaft is permanently attached to the filter wheel.
3.

Remove the filter wheel [1] from the assembly.

4.

Install the new Filter Wheel (P/N XBD-6568-82) by performing the previous steps in reverse order.

After securing the coding wheel to the filter wheel shaft, apply Loctite* 401.

HEATING BLOCK ASSEMBLY (Refer to Figure 9E-1.)

To avoid personal injury, due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled, "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Unplug the temperature sensor connector [1] on the Power Pack PCB [3].

3.

Unsolder the two (2) Peltier element power leads [2] at the terminals on the Power Pack PCB.

Before removing the Heating Block Assembly, note the exact routing of the temperature
sensor and Peltier element wires for installation of the replacement assembly.
4.

Remove the slotted screw that secures the Heating Block Assembly [6] to the measuring group base. This
screw is removed from underneath the Analyzer, and is located inside an access hole in the Analyzer
chassis, directly in line with the center of the heating block.

5.

Carefully lift the Heating Block Assembly away from the measuring group base.

6.

Before installing the new Heating Block Assembly (P/N XBD-6558-92), and to avoid crimping wires during
installation, ensure the temperature sensor wires and the Peltier element wires are pressed into the slots
in the heating block base.

7.

Position the new Heating Block Assembly on the measuring group base. Verify that the heating block
base is resting flush against the measuring group base, and that the wires are not being crimped between
the two surfaces.

8.

Secure the assembly using the mounting screw removed in step 4.

9.

Solder the Peltier element power leads to the terminals on the Power Pack PCB (black lead to positive
terminal, red lead to negative terminal).

10. Attach the temperature sensor connector to the Power Pack PCB.
11. Insert the temperature sensor and Peltier element wires into the wire holder [4] located on the right-hand
side of the Measuring Group Assembly [5].

Peltier Element (Refer to Figure 9E-2.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Unplug the temperature sensor connector [1] on the Power Pack PCB [3].

3.

Unsolder the two (2) Peltier element power leads [2] at the terminals on the Power Pack PCB.

Before removing the Heating Block Assembly, note the exact routing of the Temperature
Sensor and Peltier element wires for installation of the replacement assembly.
4.

Remove the slotted screw that secures the Heating Block Assembly [5] to the Measuring Group base.
This screw is removed from underneath the Analyzer, and is located inside an access hole in the Analyzer
chassis, directly in line with the center of the heating block.

5.

Carefully lift the Heating Block Assembly away from the Measuring Group base.

6.

Loosen the two (2) slotted screws that secure the heat sink mounting bracket [8] to the base of the heating
block.

The Peltier element is coated with Sicomet* paste and is sandwiched between the
heater block and heat sink. Note the exact position of the element for installation of the
new element.
7.

Remove the heat sink [6] by sliding it to either side of the heating block.

8.

Remove and discard the Peltier element [7].

Handle the Peltier element with care. The element is extremely fragile, particularly in
the area where the power leads are attached to the element.
9.

Carefully coat both sides of the new Peltier Element (P/N XBD-6559-91) with Sicomet paste.

Do not apply Sicomet thermal paste to the edges of the Peltier Element. This will cause
a "thermal short" between the hot and cold sides of the Peltier Element, shortening life,
and causing the temperature control circuit to be less efficient.
10. Place the Peltier element into position against the heating block, then carefully press the heat sink into
place.

When facing the heating block, ensure the red wire from the Peltier Element is on the
right (refer to Figure 9E1-1).
11. Tighten the two (2) slotted screws on the heat sink mounting bracket.

To avoid crimping the Temperature Sensor and Peltier element wires, ensure all wires
are routed through the slots provided in the heating block base.
12. Position the Heating Block Assembly on the Measuring Group base. Verify that the heating block base is
resting flush against the Measuring Group base, and that the wires are not being crimped between the two
surfaces.
13. Secure the assembly using the mounting screw removed in step 4.
14. Solder the Peltier element power leads to the terminals on the Power Pack PCB (black lead to positive
terminal, red lead to negative terminal).
15. Attach the Temperature Sensor connector to the Power Pack PCB.
16. Insert the Temperature Sensor and Peltier element wires into the wire holder [4] located on the right-hand
side of the Measuring Group Assembly.

Temperature Sensor (Refer to Figure 9E-3.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Unplug the temperature sensor connector [1] on the Power Pack PCB [2].

Before removing the Heating Block Assembly, note the exact routing of the temperature
sensor wires for installation of the replacement assembly.
3.

Remove the slotted screw that secures the Heating Block Assembly [4] to the Measuring Group Base.
This screw is removed from underneath the Analyzer, and is located inside an access hole in the Analyzer
chassis, directly in line with the center of the heating block.

4.

Carefully lift the Heating Block Assembly away from the measuring group base, then turn assembly upside
down.

The Temperature Sensor is held in place in the heating block with Sicomet paste.
5.

Remove the temperature sensor from the heating block by gently pulling on the temperature sensor wires.

6.

Liberally coat the white cylinder of the new Temperature Sensor (P/N XBD-6312-99) with Sicomet paste.

7.

Insert the new sensor as far as possible into the heating block.

8.

Route the sensor wires through the notch provided in the heating block base.

To avoid crimping the temperature sensor and Peltier element wires, ensure all wires
are routed through the slots provided in the heating block base.
9.

Position the Heating Block Assembly on the measuring group base. Verify that the heating block base is
resting flush against the measuring group base, and that the wires are not being crimped between the two
surfaces.

10. Secure the assembly using the mounting screw removed in step 3.
11. Attach the temperature sensor connector to the Power Pack PCB.
12. Insert the temperature sensor wires into the wire holder [3] located on the right side of Measuring Group
Assembly.

A/D CONVERTER PCB (Refer to Figure 9F-1.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Loosen the two (2) Phillips head screws [2] that secure the Filter Wheel Assembly cover (cover not
shown), then carefully lift the cover upward.

3.

Disconnect the ribbon cable [4] from the A/D Converter PCB [1].

4.

Using a small flat head screwdriver, or similar tool, insert the point of the tool into the hole in the top of the
spring clip [3] that secures the A/D Convert PCB.

5.

Pull the spring clip away from the PCB, then carefully slide the PCB upward to remove.

6.

Insert the new A/D Converter PCB (P/N XBD-6545-80) by pulling the spring clip [4] toward the front of the
Analyzer while sliding the PCB into position. Ensure the spring clip locks into the hole in the PCB.

7.

Attach the ribbon cable [4] to the A/D Converter PCB.

8.

Reinstall the Filter Wheel Assembly cover, then tighten the cover mounting screws [2].

9G

CPU PCB (Refer to Figure 9G-1.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled, "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Remove the program module located on the left-hand side of the Analyzer.

The ribbon cable [1] located in the upper right-hand corner of the CPU PCB [2] can only
be removed from the CPU PCB. DO NOT attempt to remove this cable from the Power
Pack PCB [4].
The pins of this ribbon cable are very fragile. To remove the cable from the CPU PCB,
pull the cable straight upward.
3.

Disconnect the seven (7) wire and ribbon connectors from the CPU PCB.

4.

Remove the seven (7) Phillips head screws [3] that secure the CPU PCB to the Analyzer chassis.

5.

Install the new CPU PCB (P/N XBD-6570-39) by performing the previous steps in reverse order.

6.

Power up Analyzer and verify optical system check passes. If the optical system fails, perform the
adjustment procedure titled "Amplifier Adjustment" in Chapter 7.

SUBSYSTEM PCB (Refer to Figures 9H-1 and 9H-2.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled, "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Turn Analyzer main cover [1] upside down to access the Subsystem PCB [2].

3.

Remove the two (2) hex standoff posts [5] that secure the PCB to the mounting posts.

The location of the standoff posts is critical for installation of the replacement assembly.
4.

Remove the two (2) Phillips head screws [3] and star washers [4] that secure the PCB to the mounting
posts.

The printer assembly is attached to the underside of the Subsystem PCB. To avoid
damage to the printer assembly, remove the PCB slowly.
5.

Slowly lift, then turn over the Subsystem PCB.

Refer to Figure 9H-2 when performing the following steps.

6.

Unplug the ribbon cable from the connector [7] located below the printer print head motor. This ribbon
cable connects to the LED Display Assembly.

7.

Unplug the aspirate switch connector [12].

8.

Unplug the CPU interconnect ribbon cable [11].

9.

Unplug the two (2) key pad ribbon cables [6].

10. Remove the four (4) Phillips head screws [8] and star washers [9] that secure the printer assembly [10] to
the standoff posts on the PCB.
11. Unplug the printer ribbon cable from the PCB.
12. Install the new Subsystem PCB (P/N XBD-6542-00) by performing the previous steps in reverse order.

PRINTER ASSEMBLY

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

To remove the Printer Assembly, refer to the paragraph titled, "Subsystem PCB" in Chapter 9.

2.

To install the new Printer Assembly (P/N XBD-8813-40), refer to the paragraph titled, "Subsystem PCB" in
Chapter 9, and perform the steps in reverse order.

LCD DISPLAY ASSEMBLY (Refer to Figure 9J-1.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Subsystem PCB [4] (refer to steps 1 through 7 in the paragraph titled, "Subsystem PCB" in
Chapter 9).

2.

Remove the two (2) Phillips head screws [2] and star washers [3] that secure the Display Assembly
mounting brackets [1] to the Analyzer main cover. Remove the LCD Display Assembly [5].

3.

Install the new LCD Display Assembly (P/N XBD-6556-78) using the screws and washers removed in step
2.

4.

Adjust display brightness potentiometer R202 (on the Subsystem PCB) as required.

9K

POWER PACK PCB (Refer to Figure 9K-1.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled, "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Unplug all connectors from the Power Pack PCB [3].

3.

Carefully unsolder the two (2) Peltier element power leads [4].

To avoid damaging components on the Power Pack PCB during removal, the cooling
fan and peristaltic pump assemblies must be removed first.
4.

Remove the cooling fan assembly [2] by removing the two (2) Phillips head screws [6] and star washers [7
] that secure the fan mounting bracket [8] to the base of the Analyzer.

5.

Remove the Peristaltic Pump Assembly [1] (refer to the paragraph titled, "Peristaltic Pump and Motor
Assembly" in Chapter 9).

6.

Remove the five (5) Phillips head screws [5] that secure the standoff posts to the PCB, and remove the
PCB.

To install the new Power Pack PCB (P/N XBD-6546-22), perform the previous steps in reverse order.

TRANSFORMER ASSEMBLY (Refer to Figure 9L-1.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled, "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Unplug the two (2) transformer leads connectors [3] at the Power Pack PCB [4].

Before disconnecting the five (5) yellow transformer leads at the input voltage selector
block, note the wire numbers and respective terminal connection points for reference
when installing the new transformer.
3.

Unplug the five (5) yellow transformer leads at the input voltage selector block [1].

4.

Using a 10-mm socket wrench, remove the bolt that secures the transformer [2] to the Analyzer chassis.

5.

Remove the transformer and retain the insulator pad located between the transformer and the Analyzer
chassis.

6.

Attach the new transformer (P/N XBD-6553-06) and existing insulator pad to the Analyzer chassis using
the bolt removed in step 4.

7.

Connect the five (5) yellow transformer leads to the input voltage selector block [1].

8.

Plug the two (2) transformer leads connectors [3] onto the Power Pack PCB.

FUSE REPLACEMENT (Refer to Figure 9M-1.)
The fuseholder contains two (2) fuses, type M3.15A, and is located behind a protective lid directly above the
Analyzer power cord connector.

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Insert a small screwdriver into the slot [1] directly above the voltage selector display [2], then twist the
screwdriver to unsnap the top of the protective lid [3]. The protective lid is hinged at the bottom.

2.

The two (2) fuse holders [4] are labeled with arrows. To remove the fuse holders, insert thumb nail into
the slot on top of the fuse holder, then pull out.

3.

Use a small screwdriver to remove fuse from the fuseholder.

Use only Type M3.15A fuses (P/N XBD-8196-13) for all line voltages.
4.

Insert new fuse into the fuseholder, then reinsert fuseholder. Ensure direction of arrows on fuseholders
match arrows on inside of protective lid (arrows must point toward right).

5.

Gently snap the protective lid into place by applying pressure to both upper corners of lid at the same
time.

6.

Verify that correct voltage is displayed on voltage selector.

7.

Plug in power cord (to Analyzer, then to power source), then set power switch to ON position.

PERISTALTIC PUMP TUBE (Refer to Figure 9N-1.)

To avoid personal injury due to electrical shock, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.

POTENTIAL BIOHAZARDOUS MATERIAL

Since the items that are manipulated while performing the following procedure may have
been exposed to human blood, wear protective clothing, gloves, and safety glasses to
avoid possible exposure to a biohazard.
1.

Remove the tubing from the suction and waste ports [1] on the peristaltic pump [5].

2.

Rotate the swivel bracket [2], located on top of the pump, in a clockwise direction to release the pump
tubing guide [4].

3.

Slide the peristaltic pump tube [3], with attached ports, out of the pump tubing guide.

4.

Insert the new peristaltic tube, with attached ports (P/N XBD-6567-75), into the pump tubing guide.

5.

Place and hold the pump tubing guide onto the peristaltic pump, then rotate the swivel bracket [2]
counterclockwise to lock the pump tubing guide into place.

6.

Attach the waste tube to the port labeled with the up arrow (port nearest to printer paper roll). Attach the
suction tube to the port labeled with the down arrow.

7.

Plug in power cord (to Analyzer, then to power source), then set power switch to ON position.

8.

Press <Rinse> to verify proper pump operation.

9.

Calibrate aspiration volume (refer to RA-50 System Operator's Manual).

PERISTALTIC PUMP MOTOR & GEARBOX (Refer to Figures 9O-1 and 9O-2.)

cord from rear of Analyzer.
1.

Remove the Analyzer main cover (refer to the paragraph titled, "Main Cover Removal" in Chapter 9).

2.

Remove the tubing from the suction and waste ports [3] on the peristaltic pump [5].

3.

Rotate the swivel bracket [6], located on top of the pump, in a clockwise direction to release the pump
tubing guide [4].

4.

Remove the two (2) hex nuts [1] and star washers [2] located at the left-hand and right-hand sides of the
pump.

5.

Carefully slide the pump assembly away from the Analyzer rear chassis.

6.

Unplug the pump motor leads connector on the Power Pack PCB.

Refer to Figure 9O-2 when performing the following steps.

Remove the four (4) hex nuts [2] and star washers [3] that secure the pump motor & gearbox [1] to the
Analyzer rear chassis, and remove the pump motor & gearbox.

8.

Mount the new Pump Motor & Gearbox (P/N XBD-6556-03) to the Analyzer rear chassis using the nuts
and washers removed in step 7.

9.

Plug the motor leads connector onto the Power Pack PCB.

10. Slide the peristaltic pump assembly onto the pump motor & gearbox drive shaft [4], making sure that the
drive shaft hole in the pump rotor assembly is properly aligned with the flat part of the drive shaft.
11. Secure the pump assembly to the Analyzer rear chassis using the nuts and washers removed in step 4.
12. Place and hold the pump tubing guide onto the peristaltic pump, then rotate the swivel bracket
counterclockwise to lock the pump tubing guide into place.
13. Attach the waste tube to the port labeled with the up arrow (port nearest to printer paper roll). Attach the
suction tube to the port labeled with the down arrow.
14. Plug in power cord (to Analyzer, then to power source), then set power switch to ON position.
15. Press <Rinse> to verify proper pump operation.
16. Calibrate aspiration volume (refer to Technicon RA-50 System Operator's Manual).

measurements or replacing any components, set the Analyzer power switch to
the OFF position, disconnect power cord from power source, and remove power
cord from rear of Analyzer.

Table 10B-1 provide troubleshooting information based on messages displayed on the LCD display. To
perform troubleshooting, locate the applicable message and perform the action(s) listed. When more than one
component is listed to be replaced, sequentially replace the components in the order shown, and restart the
Analyzer after each component is replaced.
