Fijians To Have Their Say On New Flag

Design

Fijians now have the opportunity to have

their say on the design of the new Fiji flag.
And they can do so from the comfort of
their homes through the website http://
www.newfijiflag.com/
On this website, you will be able to participate
and evaluate the 23 designs chosen after
reviewing the more than 2,000 received
during the national flag competition.
The Flag Committee will welcome
participants feedback on as many or as
few designs as they would like.
The feedback period will end on 30 June.
The designs will be submitted to Cabinet
for consideration before going on to
Parliament.
Participants can also submit their
comments via text message, e-mail, social
media, radio phone-in and the post.

PM Warns On Food Threat

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

says there is one factor threatening our
food security over which we have no
control whatsoever.
He said this was the increasing frequency
and intensity of the natural disasters we
are experiencing in the Pacific that are
being attributed to climate change.
He was delivering the country statement
after he received the Achievement Award
in Rome from the United Nations Food
and Agriculture Organisation. He was
addressing delegates to the FAO conference.
The award was in recognition for
its commitment to one of the UN
Millennium Development Goals to
reduce global hunger and develop food
security.
He said natural disasters caused by
climate change were already having a
grave impact on Fiji and other Pacific
Island nations,
But we are also facing a terrible
collective threat from rising sea levels
caused by global warming. And this is
already having a serious impact on island
nations, with much worse to come.
In Fiji a string of mainly mountainous
islands we are already having to move
entire villages, are losing precious arable
land and have identified more than 600
communities that are directly threatened
by the encroaching seas.
Yet in the case of three of our neighbours
Kiribati, Tuvalu and the Marshall
Islands, which are low lying atolls the
threat is existential. And under the current

604.909.4088

scenarios being advanced by climate

scientists, these sovereign members of
the United Nations are destined to sink
beneath the waves altogether in the
lifetimes of their young people.
The rising seas caused by the melting
icecaps constitute the gravest collective
threat to Pacific Small Island Developing
States in the entire sweep of history. And
unless this process is arrested, it is certain
to compound the dire consequences
extreme weather events are already
having on our overall food security and
ability to feed our people.
To focus global attention on this crisis,
Fiji intends to play a lead role at the
World Climate Summit in Paris at the
end of November. And with the other
Small Island Developing States, we will
be calling for immediate action on the
part of the developed nations to sign up

info@fijitimescanada.com

to the binding cuts in carbon emissions

that are vital to avert catastrophe.
I have branded those nations that are
dragging their feet on climate change as
members of the coalition of the selfish
nations putting the health of their
economies and the jobs of their workers
before the very survival of the citizens of
Small Island Developing States.
The time for prevarication is over. The
time for action is now. And I appeal to
you all and the rest of the international
community to join our alternative
coalition for action on climate change.
Because we are at five minutes to
midnight on this issue and time is rapidly
running out. We have the chance as a
community of nations to stop the clock
in Paris and start winding it back. And
we must seize that opportunity before it
is too late.

Man Begs To Earn Extra Cash

A 44-year-old man is still begging on the
streets of Labasa despite being a social
welfare recipient.
But crawling and begging around Labasa
Town is a normal routine for Suresh
Reddy.
Mr Reddys knee joints are weak,
which makes him a person living with
a disability, but he crawls around, with
knee caps strapped on, to do things.
Mr Reddy lives at Soasoa Village,
located outside Labasa, and travels to
town either on board the 8am bus or
catches a carrier at least five days a week
to beg.
He said: The money $50 cash and
$50 food voucher I receive from social
welfare is not enough because I have to
give money to the people looking after
me.
I beg for money so that I can complete
the payments for the construction of my
two bedroom wooden house at Soasoa
village where I live with my nephew, my
sisters son and his wife.
The land was given to me by the
Soasoa landowner who is very kind. I

PM Bainimaramas Rome Trip A

Success

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimaramas

visit to Rome is already being hailed a
success.
Mr Bainimarama met with the
United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organisation
(FAO)
directorgeneralJose Graziaro Da Silva. They
signed the host country memorandum of
agreement which paves the way for the
establishment of an FAO office in Fiji.
Previously all FAO activities in the
region were done through a sub-regional
office in Samoa.
HIGHLIGHTS
Other highlights of the meeting:
- Mr Bainimarama being invited to be
part of a panel to share Fijis experience
on the work of FAO with Small Island
Developing States. This was in Capturing
New Opportunities and strengthening
partnership for concrete actions.
- Also invited by FAO to attend the Special
Events on Recognising notable and
outstanding progress in fighting hunger.
- Getting special recognition from
Director-General which led to a lengthy
meeting held between the two on the
sidelines of the FAO meeting.
During his meeting with DirectorGeneral Da Silva, the Prime Minister
said the inclusion of civil society groups
and others in discussions by the FAO
was encouraging.
Mr Bainimarama said: Im particularly
encouraged by FAOs engagement, not
only with members, but also increasingly
with the civil society, the private sector
and academia a similar approach to
that of my Government establishing
partnerships
with
the
relevant
stakeholders to achieve our goals.
ASSISTANCE

I would also like to recognise and

applaud the FAOs assistance through
the Pacific Islands Country Programme
Framework, from which US$8.3 million
was granted to Fiji. The Framework has
helped facilitate about 20 local projects,
mainly in the areas of agriculture,
fisheries and forestry.
I would also like to note that my
Government is launching its 2020
Agriculture Policy, a new initiative that
allows for a 5 year development plan to
help modernise the agricultural sector and
make Fijian farmers more competitive
and successful throughout the region
an initiative which would not be possible
without the FAOs assistance.
During the panel discussion during
which Mr Bainimarama was invited to
speak on the progress Fiji has made on
the climate change front, he addressed
other leaders also on dangers that Pacific
Islands nations face.

CLIMATE CHANGE
He said that the FAOs most recent
endeavour the Technical Cooperation
Programme will help Small Island
Developing States adapt to the biggest
challenge of our time. This is rising sea
levels due to climate change.
Mr Bainimarama said: This threat
affects every one of our nations some
more directly than others and the
FAO is increasing financing to address
specific areas of need, such as disaster
management and resilience, food and
nutrition security policy, agricultural
development, and the sustainable use of
natural resources.
In Fiji we embrace the commitment to
combat climate change.
We just recently celebrated National
Environment Week, a Fijian initiative
highlighting the importance of sustainability
by educating our schoolchildren to do
more with fewer resources.

Nursing Students To Board Floating

Hospital

Eight northern nursing students will

have the opportunity to learn from very
experienced medical staff when they
board the US Naval Hospital Ship USNS
Mercy next week.
The Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI)
Sangam Nursing School students have
been picked as translators.
Sangam Head of School Kishan Kumar
said the students will translate for our
local patients who dont speak the
English language.
A lot of locals will be boarding the
ship for clinics and for those who do not
know English, that is where our nursing
students come in, Mr Kumar said.
He said the third year nurses are looking
forward to the trip next Monday with
lecturer, Mrs Jessie Young.
The nurses will be leaving Labasa next
week and they will be working on board
the ship for two days.
It would really mean a lot to the
students and the school as well in terms
of exposure and working with foreign
and local medical experts.
Mr Kumar said it was the first time for our

students to be sent on such assignments

and most of them were really excited.
Meanwhile, student Patricia Gaundan
said she looked forward to the trip to
Savusavu.
It is a life time experience to be working
on a hospital ship with foreign medical
professionals, Ms Gaundan said.
She said she would take this opportunity

as a learning experience and cannot wait

to board the ship.
The ship arrived in Savusavu on June 11
and will depart on June 19.
The USNS Mercy arrived in Suva last
Sunday afternoon for its first mission port
visit under the Pacific Partnership 2015.
This is the first visit to Fiji by a U.S.
Navy vessel in nine years.

Grandfather Jailed For Raping Grand-Daughter

A 75-year-old grandfather of Suva who
pleaded guilty for raping his 6-year-old

The offence happened between 2008 and
2011 when the victim was living under
the care of the elderly man.

the victims parents were separated and
she was raised by her grandparents.
While sentencing the man, Judge Temo
said the 75-year-old man must not
complain when his liberty is lost to pay

for his crimes.

He said the man has breached the trust
she had in him as a child as he turned her
life into a living hell.
The grandfather will be eligible for
parole after serving 9 years behind
bars.

Fiji Airways Appoints Mohan Chandra As

GM For NZ

Fiji Airways has announced the

appointment of Mohan Chandra as its
new Regional General Manager for New
Zealand.
Mr Chandra is an Aviation industry
veteran who takes up the role previously
held by the late Shannon Currie.
He was most recently Commercial
Director for Kenya Airways, based
in Kenya, where he was responsible
for Worldwide
Sales,
Revenue
Management, Network Planning and
Marketing.
Fiji Airways Executive General Manager
Sales & Marketing, Otto Gergye, said:
Were delighted to welcome Mohan to
Fiji Airways to head up what is a crucial
market not just for the airline, but for
Fijian tourism in general.
Its definitely a market were committed
to, and this is evidenced by our increased
capacity through new Wellington
flights, and increased frequencies from

Auckland and Christchurch.

Mr Chandra will be responsible
all Sales across New Zealand for
Airways as well as managing agent
supplier relationships.
He has also worked for Emirates

for
Fiji
and
and

KLM, and worked in the Middle East

and Asian markets.
Mr Chandra holds a Commercial Pilot
License from New Zealand.
He also holds an Executive Management
Diploma on Management, Finance,
Marketing & Leadership from American
Management Association, and a
Diploma in Aviation Airline Transport
Endorsement.
Another appointment
To further strengthen its Sales Operations
in New Zealand, Fiji Airways has also
appointed Melanie Watson as Manager
Sales.
This role will assist the Regional General
Manager and focus on business growth.

FNPF Encourages Expatriate Employee

Membership

The Fiji National Provident Fund is

recommending employers to urge
their expatriate employees to have a
membership account with the Fund.
This is for their savings benefit, said
chief financial officer, Anand Nanjangud
during the Funds Employers Workshop
at Novotel Suva Lami Bay Hotel.
At the end of the contract period they
are able to take that lump sum one-off,
Mr Nanjangud assured.
Even if theyre employed 6 months or
up to three years, they are able to take
that lump sum.
It is recommended in terms of their
(expatriate employees) own savings and
of their future security that even if they
are contributing to their home country
superannuation fund, in addition to that
they can have an FNPF account.
The expatriate employee, like any other
will be entitled to the Funds yearly
annual interest rate. Last years interest
rate was the biggest one yet of 5.75 per
cent.
Poverty level
Meanwhile, according to FNPF statistics
it was noted that not enough members
will have sufficient balance, should they
opt for pension, to live above the basic
poverty line.

604.909.4088

Thats one of the reasons why

Government has also pitched in to give
mandatory contribution of 10 per cent by
employers.
Additionally, theres the voluntary
contribution. And thats all aimed at
trying to grow member balances so by

the time they retire they would have

sufficient balances.
FNPF currently has 9000 employers
with an overall 395,000 members. Of
this 200,000 are contributing throughout
the year while the remaining 195,000 are
casual or part time employees.

Locals Benefit From Free Medical Services

Residents of Fijis capital, Suva are
benefiting from free medical services
provided by the crew of the US Navy
Ship (USNS) Mercy T-AH 19.
The lead ship of her class of floating
hospitals in the US Navy arrived into
the country in the weekend with about
1000 officers on board and will provide
medical services to the people of Suva
and Savusavu this week.
The services include surgical screenings,
medical surgeries, subject matter
exchanges and basic life support training.
Joy Vaka, a 55-year-old resident of
Caubati outside Suva who took advantage
of the free services at Sukuna Park said

he was fortunate to receive check-up by

a professional team of medics.
He said he was managed to get his
blood pressure and diabetes tests done
in a couple of minutes and the diet and
healthy living advice he received from
the medical team should help him to plan
his diet better.
Vaka encourages people from all
walks of life to come forward and take
advantage of the opportunity as health
is important and people should not be
hesitant in coming forward and getting
themselves checked up.
US Navy lead medical planner
Commander Ray Owens said their visit

is part of the Pacific Partnership and they

are not only engaging in health services
but also conduct engineering work at
the request and co-ordination of the host
nation Governments.
He said they will also conduct
professional exchanges with the Fiji
Maritime Academy and the Fisheries
Ministry.
The ship has partnered with the Republic
of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Ministry
of Health, the Ministry of Defence and
the Fiji National University to provide
services to members of the public.
Their services will extend to Savusavu
later in the week.

NZ Pushes Fiji To Join Arms Trade Treaty

New Zealand opposition MP Su'a
William Sio is visiting Fiji this week to
encourage its Government to join the
United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.
Sio who is also Labour's Pacific Island
Affairs spokesperson told Radio NZ that
if Fiji signs and ratifies the treaty then it
would lead the way for other Pacific states
as joining the treaty will send a strong
message to the region and the world.
"It is about sending a very strong
signal to the countries that manufacture
conventional weapons that we want to

regulate their movements, we want to

monitor what they do for that. And it's
about sending a clear signal that we in
the Pacific take a very strong position in
maintaining peace and security for our
region.
He added that signing and ratifying
the treaty will also send a clear signal
to other trading partners and aid donor
countries.
That'll give confidence to those
countries who have a vested interest in
making sure that we in Fiji, that we in

the Pacific, are able to work towards

achieving our sustainable development
goals.
The United Nations Treaty aims to regulate
the international trade in conventional
weapons for the purpose of maintaining
international and regional peace.
Only Samoa, New Zealand and Australia
have signed and ratified the treaty. Other
Pacific Island states that have signed the
Treaty but are yet to ratify it, include
Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Tuvalu, and
Vanuatu.

Fiji Tops List On Chinas Wealthy

Entrepreneurs Island Buying Trip

A group of Chinas wealthiest entrepreneurs are heading to the Pacific this month to look for small islands to buy.
Guangzhou Daily reports a Guangdong-based
entrepreneur Lin Dong says he and other five
others are planning to fly to Fiji, Tuvalu and
Tahiti this month on a buying trip.
Lin says Fiji is their top destination as it
has more than 300 islands and relatively
cheap.
He says islands in Fiji are not expensive
as its about 3 million yuan ($1m FJD)
for one island.
Lin adds Fiji is located in the South

Pacific where the environment is very

beautiful and the location is good as
direct flights will begin soon.
Lin has previously tried to buy a lake
island in Canada, but failed according to
the report and so has set his sights on the
South Pacific.
He has set up an association for island
owners on the mainland, with about 60
members and believes more wealthy
Chinese will want to buy their own

islands in the future.

Lin has acquired more than 40 additional
island properties.
He made his fortune after founding a
medical equipment company.
According to Forbes, actor Mel Gibson
also reportedly paid $15 million for
Mago Island, in Fiji, back in 2004,
where it continues to be one of the
largest privately owned islands in the
South Pacific.

Eight Fijians who breached their visitors

permits and overstayed in Tuvalu
have been sent home and banned from
entering the country.
The Fiji nationals were slapped with a

one year ban and are on their way home

on the MV Manufolau.
Senior Immigration Officer Leilani Saitala
said that the eight failed to extend their
visitors permits after the one month granted

by the department on arrival in Tuvalu.

She said visitors to Tuvalu get a free
visitor's permit of up to one month, and
this can be extended for up to 3 months,
but carries a charge.

Detained Man Identified As Fijian National

A man being held in Western Australia's
Yongah Hill Immigration Detention
Centre has been identified as a Fijian
national by authorities.
The Immigration Department has
strongly rejected claims that he is an
Indigenous Australian and not a visa
overstayer or asylum seeker.
Eddie David, 39, has been held in the
centre since last Friday.
He said he was born on Murray Island
in the Torres Strait, and his claim was
backed up by a WA Aboriginal land
council.
Mr David told the ABC he was sent
to Yongah Hill, near Northam, 97
kilometres north-east of Perth, after
being told his passport was fake.
He said he had been mistaken for
someone else, possibly a Fijian man of
a similar age.
"I'm not a refugee and I'm not an
immigrant," Mr David said from Yongah
Hill.
"I am Aboriginal, I am an Australian

citizen, born and bred of this land."

"I shouldn't be in this detention centre. If
it was a fraud, they should have put me
in the cell, in the lock-up, in the jail, not
a detention centre."
Mr David further told ABC that he had
spent many years living on the streets,
homeless and alcoholic in NSW and
elsewhere, and had come to Western
Australia several years ago.
He had wanted to access Centrelink
benefits but was told he did not have
sufficient identity papers.
He said he applied for a passport with

the help of the South West Aboriginal

Land and Sea Council, which he said he
received in March.
But when he took it to Centrelink, they
told him it was fake.
The Department of Immigration and
Border Patrol is adamant Mr David is
not Australian.
"The department detained an individual
claiming to be an Australian citizen,
following a thorough investigation by
which the department was fully satisfied
that he is an unlawful non-citizen," it
said in a statement.

Ba Hospital Construction To Create More

Jobs

Job opportunities are expected when

construction of the new Ba Hospital
begins.
More than 100 locals are likely to get
some form of employment during the
construction stages.
The Government confirmed the tender to
build the new Hospital went to Yanjian
Company Fiji Limited.
The Acting Prime Minister and AttorneyGeneral, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said
this was one of the first times that
Government had collaborated with a
private sector organisation the Ba
Chamber of Commerce.
What we see through this project and
the level of documentation is probably
unprecedented and one of the good
things about using the private sector is
that they were able to leverage or get
access to many consultants directly, Mr
Sayed-Khaiyum said.
Speaking at the signing of the
Memorandum
of
Understanding
Bhavesh Patel, a member of the Ba

Chamber of Commerce said the

construction of the hospital would serve
as a bridge between the Tavua, Rakiraki
and Lautoka hospitals.
The new hospital will provide a birthing
unit, a 24 hour emergency facility, an

x-ray and scan department, a laboratory,

a dental unit, operating theaters, a
mortuary and a pharmacy.
The construction of the $35 million
project is expected to be completed in 15
months.

Pilot And Passengers Not Injured

A pilot and three passengers walked

away unscathed following a helicopter
crash on a hilltop at Naceva Village,
Beqa, on Monday.
Speaking from Naceva village, the district
rep and former Police officer, Atunaisa
Tawake, said the helicopter, which
belongs to Island Hoppers of Nadi, was
carrying equipment for the new Vodafone
Mast at Delaibeqa. Island Hoppers
comment was not immediately available.
Mr Tawake said it was the last trip up
the mountain and when the helicopter
was trying to land, empty sacks on the
ground flew up and got tangled on the
blades and it crashed. The tail too was
damaged, he said.
Mr Tawake said the pilot and the three
passengers walked down to the village

and told the story of the crash.

We heard the crash and knew
that something had gone wrong at
Delaibeqa, Mr Tawake said.
Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji
is conducting a preliminary investigation.
The manager of the Beqa Lagoon, Dieter

Kudler, said he was not aware of the

crash.
However, he said he was offering his
help to clear an area for helicopter
landing on Beqa.
He said the island needed a helicopter
landing ground.

Fiji And Indonesia Sign New Deal

A new agreement has been signed
between Fiji and the Republic of
Indonesia.
The signing strengthens bilateral ties in
areas of women empowerment and child
protection. The agreement was officially
signed by the Minister for Women,
Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy
Akbar, and the Indonesian Minister
for Women Empowerment and Child
Protection, Professor Dr Yohana
Yembise, in Jakarta, Indonesia on
Monday.
Also present at the signing was Fijis
Ambassador to Indonesia Ratu Tui
Cavuilati and Director Women, Arieta
Moceica, and Director Social Welfare
Rupeni Fatiaki.
The
agreement
formalises
the
Fiji-Indonesia partnership for the
implementation of a three-year work plan
that will advance women empowerment
and child protection.
Speaking on behalf of the Fijian
Government, Ms Akbar said the new
agreement was symbolic of increasing
partnership between Fiji and Indonesia.
We value the diplomatic relations of 40
years with Republic of Indonesia and we
are pleased with the progressive pace on
the development of bilateral relations.
The signing is an arena that will boost the
socioeconomic opportunities for Fijian
women, Ms Akbar said. Dr Yembise
also said Indonesia looked forward to
provide increased support in the new
areas of collaboration.

Todays meeting is a very important

one because we renew and expand
the relationship with the Fijian
Government
towards
enhancing
economic development of both countries
especially through the empowerment of
women and economic development, Dr
Yembise reiterated.
In the implementation of three-year work
plan, Fiji and Indonesia has agreed on
five activities, which will be monitored
and evaluated by the Joint Technical
Working Group, led by the two ministries
and their respective diplomatic missions.
These activities are as follows:
- Joint Technical Working Group will see
the annual review of the implementation
framework. This will be held in Fiji in

June, 2016;
- Partnership to promote Fijis National
Womens Expo 2015 through sharing of
skills. Indonesian women artisans and the
Indonesian women in business council
will attend the National Womens Expo
2015 which will be held in Suva from
October 14th to 16th.
- Women Entrepreneurship Trainings
and capacity building programs to be
facilitated by Indonesia.
- Exchange of Experts of Practitioners
to enhance the status of women and
children; and
- Fiji and Indonesia Joint Monitoring
and Technical Working Framework will
be monitored on a quarterly basis from
2015 to 2018.

SOME locals have been gathering

confidential information of unsuspecting
persons and passing them to their
overseas counterparts who then hack
into bank accounts in Fiji.
Police chief of intelligence and investigations,
ACP Henry Brown said the growing issue of
phishing was a security concern.
Phishing is the attempt to acquire
sensitive information such as usernames,
passwords, and credit card details
and sometimes money often for
malicious reasons, by masquerading
as a trustworthy entity in an electronic
communication.
Mr Brown said in a recent case, locals
allegedly acted as third parties to a
person overseas that required money as
a form of cash deposit before they were
able to claim their prize money.

"It is alleged the victim provided details

of the bank account which was hacked
by the overseas party," he said.
"The locals involved allegedly also
colluded to get the financial information
of other parties under the cover of helping
the original recipient of the prize money
send large sums of money overseas as they
tried to beat the system and the permitted
amount for sending money overseas
through money transfers," Mr Brown said.
He said while the Cybercrime Unit
continued to receive reports largely
to do with annoying persons or an attack
on one's character through social media
there was a growing concern for the
issue of phishing.
"Members of the public are being
requested not to divulge financial
information, particularly with people

they don't trust.

"Emails and other correspondences that
require one to send money or provide
information about their bank accounts
and other financial statements should not
be entertained."
Mr Brown said those who received
emails or texts stating they had won a
prize requiring them to send particulars
of their financial status was common.
"Such information can be used against
you and which is why people need to be
cautious about who you are dealing with
especially if it is from an unknown source.
"The Fiji Police Force is working very
closely with the Financial Intelligence
Unit to track down those who are in
breach of the Financial Transactions
Reporting Act as this is seen as a form of
money laundering."

Family Wants Justice

The family of Yako accident victim
Ushan Bano wants justice after she died
at the Lautoka Hospital on Monday.
Ms Bano, 53, suffered serious injuries in
a road accident last Thursday in Nadi.
Daughter-in-law Rukshana Ali said she
had a lucky escape as she was sitting in
the front passenger seat.
Police were slow to respond, it took
10 minutes to get me out of the car as a
group of men had to try and take me out
of the car, then I realised my mother-in
law was still in the car so I begged them
to take her out, she said.
The driver of the other car was
speeding and he overtook our car from
the passenger side. We were about to
turn right when he hit us. Our car spun

twice before landing in the canefield.

My husband Abdul tried to wake her
(Ms Bano) up but she was too weak
so she just looked at both of us before
fainting, we didnt know that would be
the last time we saw her alive.
We were told that both my husband
and the driver of the other vehicle will
be interviewed after the funeral and we
hope that justice will be served.
Ms Bano was a widow with three
children. One was driving the vehicle
when the accident happened.
Daughter Nazreen Bano, 32, said the
family was very attached to their mother.
We will really miss her especially since
we were all very close to her and my
kids have grown very close to her since

she was always looking after them, she

said.
She said it was a hard task to tell her
children about her death.
They knew she was admitted but when they
came after school they knew something was
wrong and when they asked us we decided
to just tell them, she said.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said
according to the investigating officer, the
post officer of the Nawaicoba community
post was informed by a passing taxi
at about 7.25pm that an accident had
occurred.
The taxi driver was transporting the
three including the driver, his wife and
deceased to the hospital, she said.
Since the accident scene is just near the
post, two officers attended the scene and
called the Nadi Police Station shortly
within a time of five minutes after
confirming the accident.
She said traffic officers from Nadi were
then deployed to the scene immediately
with the National Fire Authority but by
the time the police arrived at the scene
the three had already been taken to
hospital by a passing taxi.
The drivers statement has been
recorded and investigations continue,
she said.

Professor Brij Lal

Awarded Order Of
Australia
Fijian academic Professor Brij Lal has been awarded the Order of
Australia.
Professor Lal who currently teaches at Australian National University
(ANU) was given the award in the Queens's Birthday Honour List.
He was recognised for his significant service to education, through the
preservation and teaching of Pacific history, as a scholar, author and
commentator.
Professor Lal who has been banned from returning to Fiji indefinitely
applied for re-entry in late March after his case was highlighted by the
Opposition in a Parliament sitting.
And while Fijian authorities are yet to comment on the status of his
application, Professor Lal is confident he will get a chance to return to
his country of birth someday.

Family Mourns Loss Of Son

A family of Bulolo on the outskirts of Ba
Town is trying to come to terms with the
death of their son and brother.
Ravinesh Kumar was found floating
in the river near Natanuku Village on
Tuesday by a fisherman.
He was 41. He was reported missing last
Saturday.
His elder brother, Dinesh, 45, said his
family was devastated over the loss.
Mr Ravinesh was an employee of Danam
(Fiji) Limited in Ba. Mr Dinesh said his
brother had been sickly since last December.
My brother was normal, but got sick
around December last year after his
upper lip swelled up, but he recovered
well, Mr Dinesh said.
It was around February this year that he
became worse. He didnt want to go out or
return to work. He just changed totally.
He said his brother attended prayers at
the temple every Tuesday.
Around half-past-five in the morning,
he woke up, and went out while my
father was asleep. At about quarter-tosix my father woke up and realised he
(Ravinesh) was gone.
We searched in the sugarcane fields, but
we couldnt find him. Later on Tuesday,
a family friend who is an iTaukei
fisherman told my father that he saw my
brother floating in the river.
The post mortem was conducted and

the cause of death was drowning, Mr

Dinesh said.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro
confirmed the drowning.

He is believed to be of unsound mind

and was reported missing on Saturday
morning. Checks made at likely places
proved futile, Ms Naisoro said.

The Methodist Church in Fiji-run Dudley

High School has investigated a video
that surfaced on Facebook showing two
young girls who were allegedly sniffing
glue sitting beside a person appearing to
be a student of the school.
This was confirmed by the churchs
Secretary for Communication and Overseas

Mission, Reverend James Bhagwan.

The video has been investigated by the
school principal and it was found that
the two girls allegedly sniffing glue were
not students of the school, Reverend
Bhagwan said.
We cannot tell if that video is real or
not and whats the concept surrounding

that video.
He said nevertheless they were very
concerned with the rise in substance abuse
among young people in our communities.
We need to address the root causes
and track down those selling it to
young people, students likewise school
dropouts, Reverend Bhagwan said.

Four Tourists Detained In Mount Kinabalu

Nude Picture Scandal

Malaysian authorities have detained

four tourists - two Canadians, one
Briton and one Dutch national - for
allegedly stripping naked on Mount
Kinabalu, an act some locals say
angered tribal spirits and caused a
deadly earthquake.
Pictures of 10 naked tourists had spread
on social media and infuriated locals
following the magnitude-6.0 quake
that struck near the mountain killing 18
people.
Six other tourists are still apparently at
large, according to police.
"We detained all four of them on
Tuesday... and yes we are still searching
for the other six tourists and we will
catch them," Sabah police commissioner
Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said.
He said those detained could be charged
for causing public nuisance.
Sabah provincial tourism minister Masidi
Manjun tweeted that legal proceedings
against the four foreigners had begun
and that they would be remanded for
four days.
Earlier it was reported a 38-year-old
European man was arrested for allegedly
stripping naked and urinating on the
mountain prior to the earthquake.
It is unclear whether the man was among
the four arrested.
The quake sent landslides crashing down
from Mount Kinabalu's summit just as
more than 150 hikers were at the peak
enjoying sunrise views.
Mount Kinabalu, a UNESCO World

Heritage Site and popular climbing

destination, is considered sacred by
Malaysia's Kadazan Dusun tribal group
who believe it is a resting place for
spirits.
Eighteen people have been confirmed
dead on the mountain, with a significant
number of them young students from
Singapore who were on a school
excursion.
In the wake of the disaster, Malaysian
social media users and some Sabah
officials have focused on the nudists,
suggesting that their actions angered the
spirits and led to the earthquake.
One of the tourists who had posted nude
photos of himself on Mount Kinabalu

hit back at Sabah's tourism minister,

saying he was "regressive" and that his
comments were "stupid", in a video
posted on social media.
But Mr Masidi said the idea that
the tourists' actions had caused the
earthquake was "misconstrued".
"I never said that they actually caused
the earthquake but their actions were
against the people of the largest tribe in
Sabah," he said.
"The mountain is a revered and sacred
site."
He said a traditional interfaith cleansing
ritual is expected to take place at the
mountain site soon involving Muslims,
Christians and tribal leaders.

Muslim Mother In UK Attacked For

Wearing Head Scarf

In a "racist" attack, a group of women in

London allegedly abused, punched and
kicked a Muslim woman for wearing a
head scarf.
Police are investigating the incident
in which a group of women allegedly
ripped off the Muslim mother's 'hijab'
(head scarf) when she went to collect her
children from Al-Khair school in south
London.
The young mother was set upon by three
women "for wearing a head scarf" as
she walked towards the private Islamic
primary school, the Evening Standard
reported.
She was going to collect her two young
children when a number of women

604.510.4088

started "shouting and hurling abuse".

They allegedly asked if she was hot in
the head scarf - before ripping it off and
punching her.
The mother, who wished to remain
anonymous, told the daily, "They pulled
my head scarf off and started punching
and kicking me.
"One was dragging my head down while
the others were hitting me. They were
being so racist and using derogatory
terms," She said.
The woman said she was left with
whiplash and chunks of hair missing but
suffered no significant physical harm
and the London Ambulance Service was
not called.

info@fijitimescanada.com

The alleged attack in Derby Road,

Croydon, close to the school, only
stopped when another parent jumped in,
according to police.
Officers were called to the scene and two
women, aged 18 and 35, were arrested
on suspicion of assault and a racially
aggravated public order offence.
They were taken to a police station
before being bailed to return at a later
date. Officers are investigating the
incident, Scotland Yard said.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman
said, "We take any offence seriously.
We have made two arrests in
connection
with
our
ongoing
investigation."

Maryam Rashidi Dies From Injuries

Sustained In Calgary Gas-And-Dash

Maryam Rashidi, the Centex gas station

attendant who was hit by a stolen truck
while trying to stop a theft on Sunday,
has died.
"She's gone, I lost my wife," her
husband, Ahmad Rashidi, told CBC
News as he took his son to the hospital.
"I lost everything."
Calgary police say the 35-year-old
woman, also known as Ashtiana, had
followed a pickup truck that had not paid
for gas.
She stood in front of the vehicle to get it
to stop, but the truck hit and ran over her.
"We are devastated at Maryam's
passing," said Centex Petroleum
president Alnoor Bhura. "Our thoughts
and heartfelt sympathy go out to her
family and friends. We pray they are able
to get through this time of sadness and
pain. We are all struggling with this at
the moment."
He says gas thefts occur every day in

Alberta and the company's policy is

for employees to call police instead of
putting themselves at risk.
Earlier this week Bhura called for "pay
before pump" legislation.
2 males taken into custody
Barrie Harrison with Occupational
Health and Safety, which is investigating
the incident, says new legislation is not a

priority right now.

"Any gas station or gas company is free
to implement a system that requires
paying for fuel prior to the pump being
operational," he said. "They don't require
a law to tell them to do that."
Staff at the Centex station on 16th
Avenue in northwest Calgary said it was
only Maryam's third day on the job. A
manager there said the staff are shocked
and sad.
Police believe one of the suspects, who
was a passenger in the stolen pickup,
may be a minor. The truck was found
abandoned last night in the Varsity
neighbourhood in the city's northwest.
Police confirmed on Tuesday night they
have taken two males into custody in
connection to the incident.
They will now interview the persons
of interest to see if they were involved
before moving forward with the
investigation.

Hamilton, Thunder Bay Had Highest Rates

Of Hate Crime In Canada In 2013

The Ontario cities of Hamilton and

Thunder Bay had the highest rate of
reported hate crimes in 2013 in Canada,
a new report says.
The data, collected by the Canadian
Centre for Justice Statistics for Statistics
Canada, show Thunder Bay had the
highest rate of reported crimes, at 20.9
per 100,000 population, followed by
Hamilton with 17.4. In 2012, Hamilton
had the highest rate at 23.2, followed
by Thunder Bay with 16.6. The national
average is 3.3 reported crimes per
100,000 people.
Saint John, N.B., and St. Johns had the
lowest rate of reported hate crimes, at 0
and 0.5 per 100,000 respectively.
More than half of all reported crimes in
2013 were motivated by hatred of race
or ethnicity, according to the report. Of
those racial hate crimes, 44 per cent or
22 per cent targeted black people.
Over all, reported hate crimes were down
17 per cent due to a large decrease in nonviolent crimes such as mischief, which
includes hate graffiti and the destruction
of religious property. Mischief still made
up the largest proportion of crimes, at 45
per cent, followed by assault at 15 per
cent. Because the statistics are based on
reported crimes, they do not capture the

604.510.4088

full extent of hate crimes in Canada, the

report said. Although it is hard to know
what percentage goes unreported, a
General Social Survey on Victimization
in 2009 found about two-thirds of victims
in hate crimes do not report them.
Apart from a few trends, the statistics
are hard to compare over time due to
response rates by police departments.
The 2013 data come so late in 2015
because of the time it takes to check
them, according to Rebecca Kong, chief
of the policing services program at the
centre for justice statistics.
Because the numbers are relatively
small and sensitive, we take a
lot of care in ensuring all the police
services who report hate crimes have an
opportunity to review all of them, Ms.
Kong said.
Chris Adams, executive officer of the
Thunder Bay Police Service, said the
high numbers in his city are partly a
result of an effort to get people to report
hate crimes.
I think it reflects the fact that more
people are coming forward, as well as
our officers are utilizing the training
theyve been given to recognize and
be able to investigate hate-motivated
crimes more thoroughly, he said.

info@fijitimescanada.com

He admitted it may also be that Thunder

Bay has more hate crime.
Certainly, being high in this years
statistics, it puts us on the map and is
a concern. It also says a lot about
the community we live in that these
issues exist. They really do have to be
addressed, he said.
Detective Carmen Pietroniro, who heads
the hate crime unit at the Hamilton Police
Service, also said the numbers indicate a
high reporting rate, rather than a higher
proportion of hate crimes.

Const. Daniel Woodall Died In Fight

Against Hate
'He said, it's our job to make sure you are safe,' says man who worked closely with fallen officer

Const. Daniel Woodall died in the fight

against hate.
The eight-year veteran of the Edmonton
police was shot several times on the
doorstep of a home in west Edmonton
on Monday night while serving an arrest
warrant relating to a hate crimes matter.
His children woke up this morning
without a father, his wife without a
husband.
Those who worked closely with Woodall
remember a passionate, dedicated and
caring police officer.
Kris Wells, the director of programs
and services at the Institute for Sexual
Minority Studies at the University of
Alberta, worked with Woodall closely,
both professionally and personally.
Within the past year, Wells filed his
own hate crime complaint after being
harassed online. He met with Woodall
on numerous occasions, and watched
as the officer combed through pages of
documents collected in the case.
"He was meticulous at his job," Wells
said, adding that it was Woodall's
compassion that put him at ease.
"Finally, I said to Daniel, 'I just need to
know if I'm going to be safe,'" Wells said,
recounting a conversation with Woodall,
"And he said, 'it's our job to make sure
you are safe.' and I'll never forget that.
"He had a passion for protecting
Edmontonians and combating hate, and
that's a legacy we will always remember."
Woodall, 35, was recruited from Great
Britain, where he served with the Greater
Manchester Police for seven years. He and
his wife, Claire, moved to Edmonton after
he accepted a job with EPS and eventually
joined the hate crimes unit. Claire Woodall
found work at a local radio station. The
couple has two young boys.
Those who knew Woodall paint a picture
of a nice guy who loved life in Canada
and in Edmonton.
Maurice Brodeur, Edmonton Police
Association president, said Woodall had
taken up hunting and was a "happy-golucky fellow with a smile on his face."
By happenstance, Brodeur said he ran
into Woodall just a few days ago, a
chance run-in that he's now reflecting on.
"We had a laugh, and a joke and to
suddenly find him gone, it's too much to
comprehend.
"I can't believe he's gone," he said, his
voice breaking.

Partner 'completely shook up'

Sgt. Jason Harley, 38, was shot in the
back but his armoured vest stopped the
bullet. He has since been released from
hospital.
Brodeur said Harley is "completely
shook up."
"He's just overcome by guilt and anger
over the whole situation, guilt that
somehow he could have done something
to help," he said.
Brodeur said he wanted to send a
message to the citizens of Edmonton.
"We're your protectors. If you could do

info@fijitimescanada.com

this favour for my members, the men

and the women, if you could embrace
them with all you got. It's a tough job,
and they need that support."
On Tuesday morning the Greater
Manchester Police released a statement
saying: "No matter where police officers
serve, the dangers of policing are a day
to day reality for officers. The thinning
blue line is the very veneer that holds
society together, by protecting victims
and deterring offenders. Sadly, Daniel
has paid the ultimate price in the service
of his community."

Hidden Toxic In Healthy Food

What happens when health food conceals within it, a bevy of unknown risk factors?

A normal day in the life of the average

urban adult begins at a sleepy 6 am, as he
resolutely dons his tracks and sets out on
his morning walk. With the words 'health
food', 'diet' and 'exercise' forming a major
part of our existence, we are with or
without our knowledge immersed in the
trend of leading a healthy life. And when
it comes to dieting, it has become the one
thing to supplement our food intake with
fruits and vegetables. However, what
lies beneath these seemingly healthy
foods could be unknown toxins which
could do more harm than good.
Take for instance, what accounts for
the roughage in our diet. Cruciferous
vegetables like cabbage, lettuce,
Brussels sprouts and cauliflower are
known to contain a chemical that is
known to suppress the activity of the
thyroid gland and also interfere with the
iodine metabolism. However, according
to a health consultant, these vegetables
do not contain toxins. "They contain
goitrogens, which hinder the uptake of
iodine by the thyroid gland. When there
is a deficiency of iodine in the diet, it

may lead to hypothyroidism. This may

be prevented by using iodised salt.
I broke out into a cold sweat and
experienced severe stomach pain at a
restaurant one day. It was only after I
went to a doctor and cross-checked my
symptoms did I realise that I was allergic
to tomatoes The bad news is that while
most vegetables do not cause allergies,
there are some common 'healthy'
vegetables which are known to contain
allergy-causing toxins. These include
eggplant and bell peppers, both of which
could be possible ingredients of your
afternoon sandwich.
Sprouted green potatoes, similarly,
have been known to contain alkaloids,
chaconine and solanine, that cause mild
forms of migraine and drowsiness.
Eating veggies raw poses a bigger threat
as there is a greater risk of contracting
infection through microbes such as E coli
and Salmonella. Eating raw vegetables
that have not been washed well and
fruits that have been cut and exposed to
flies, puts us at risk of gastrointestinal
infections.

It's not just the veggies, fruits too are

loaded with hidden toxins! Apricots
and prunes cause osmotic diarrhoea,
especially among fructose-resistant
people.
Basic factors for toxicity include
temperature swings, low pH, low water
content, low soil fertility and improper
storage.
Additionally,
chemical
insecticides and fertilisers are also
to be blamed. Chemical sweeteners
like aspartame, food colourants,
contaminated masala powders and even
milk can alter everyday food.
However, despite the alarming risk
they pose, vegetables and fruit are
storehouses of vitamins, minerals and
nutrients, and contribute to building
antitoxins in our body. Additionally,
they are important in fighting diseases,
due to the presence of phytochemicals.
Therefore, to avoid eating them
altogether is not warranted. If you are
wary of eating something due to the
presence of toxins, always take the
guidance of a qualified physician. After
all, prevention is better than cure.

If you're trying to drop a few kilos,

make sure you have the protein box
ticked at meal times. Foods that are
high in protein take longer to digest
and metabolise which means your
end up burning more calories trying
to process them. Not only that, it also
keeps you fuller for longer. Try these
protein hits for maximum weight loss
benefits.
Almonds
Try snacking on a small handful of raw
almonds. Its important to have healthy
snacks like this on hand to keep you
going until your next meal. Helping you
resist the urge to indulge in unhealthy
sugary snack foods.
Pumpkin seeds
Sprinkle these healthy seeds on your
breakfast cereal to help keep you full for
longer. That way you will be less likely
to binge eat at your next meal.
Organic eggs
Eggs make an excellent breakfast or
lunch. They will assist with keeping
your blood sugar levels stable and sugar
cravings at bay. Ideal for anyone on a
weight loss program.

Organic yoghurt
Add a spoonful of yoghurt to your muesli,
porridge, or smoothie, or have it on its
own as a healthy snack. This protein rich
food will help prevent spikes and drops
in blood sugar levels, which can trigger
weight gain. Avoid yoghurts with added
sugars.
Grass-fed meat
Having a piece of protein the size and
thickness of your palm is a good rule of
thumb when working out healthy portion
sizes. Grass-fed meat is not only a good
source of protein but also high in iron.
You need plenty of iron to give you
energy, which is important when starting
a new weight loss exercise regime.
Oily fish
Another factor to consider when trying
to balance blood sugar levels is omega-3
fatty acids, found in abundance in oily
fish like salmon and sardines. Eating
foods that contain healthy fats and
protein will also give you a sense of
satiety. Eating these good fats will help
keep your weight down.
Lentils
Legumes are not only rich in protein

but also contain plenty of fibre. These

nutrients are important for balancing
blood sugar levels and keeping you more
satisfied after a meal.
Hummus
This nutritious dip makes the perfect
snack with some veggie sticks or
wholegrain crackers. It is full of protein
and fibre, and is a great way to prevent
the afternoon munchies.
Quinoa
This gluten-free seed is an excellent
alternative to rice and other grains. Full
of protein and fibre, quinoa will help
keep hunger pangs at bay. Using quinoa
instead of grains is a great way to cut
down on carbs too. Quinoa is versatile
too - it's delicious as a porridge, in
salads, with curries or stir-fries.
Brown rice protein powder
This is a convenient and healthy way
to increase your protein intake. Just
mix yourself up a delicious brown rice
protein-based smoothie! Having protein
with each meal is one of the best ways
to assist with healthy weight loss as they
help fill you up and reduce the likelihood
of sugar cravings.

How To Manage Your Cholesterol

Excess bad cholesterol can lead to heart
disease or stroke, so take into account
a few steps to manage your cholesterol
levels.
A Nutritionist has shared her top tips on
how to keep your cholesterol levels in
control.
* Superfruits: Following recent
nutritional studies, several fruits have
been labelled 'superfoods' due to their
ability to combat harmful fats and
reduce bad cholesterol. For instance, it
was recently revealed that strawberries

have the ability to reduce LDL, the

harmful form of cholesterol, by nearly
14 percent.
* Unsaturated fats: Consuming omega-3
essential fatty acids, found in unsaturated
fats, will help to lower the levels of bad
cholesterol in the blood. Unsaturated
fats include oily fish, nuts and seeds,
ground flax seeds, olive oil and certain
vegetables and fruits such as avocado.
* Fibre: Beans, pulses, vegetables,
cereal and whole grain breads all have
a high fermentable fibre content and are

therefore difficult for the gut to digest so

they attach to bad cholesterol and then
remove it from the body via waste.
* Red wine: Red wine contains a plant
compound called saponin which blocks
the body's absorption of bad cholesterol,
LDL. This news is not an excuse to
drink large quantities of red wine and I
do not recommend adding red wine to
your diet purely for health reasons since
alcohol consumption can lead to further
health complications such as high blood
pressure and liver disease.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Linked To Diet

The change in your bowel pattern or
abdominal pain has more to do with
your diet and balance of beneficial and
harmful gut bacteria than with your
mood, studies show.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), an
umbrella term that refers to diarrhoea,
discomfort,
cramps,
constipation,
abdominal swelling (bloating) and
pain, was believed to be a primarily
psychological condition for a long time.
"Contrary to this view, recent findings
suggest that IBS is linked to clearly
detectable gut microbiota (microbe
population living in our intestine)
alterations. Additionally, bloating can
be related to specific kinds of diet, thus
opening up promising paths towards
an efficient disease management,"

said professor Giovanni Barbara of

University of Bologna in Italy.
According to him, there is a lot of
evidence showing that IBS is associated
with an imbalanced composition of the
gut microbiota.
This means that the system of checks
and balances between beneficial and
potentially harmful bacteria, which
characterises a healthy gut microbiota, is
disturbed in IBS patients.
"IBS symptoms develop in up to
10 percent of previously healthy
subjects after a single episode
of gastroenteritis caused by an
infection through bacterial pathogens
like Salmonella, Shighella or
Campylobacter, which can severely
disrupt the microbiota balance,"

said Barbara, who is also the

president of the European Society of
Neurogastroenterology and Motility.
Not only infections, but also the
antibiotics that are used as a remedy,
may increase the risk for IBS, as they,
too, can alter the gut microbiota in a
negative way, the studies showed.
Researchers have now shown that food
rich in carbohydrates, particularly fiber,
might lead to repeated bloating and
flatulence in some individuals.
The potentially negative impact of this
kind of nutrition applies in particular to
individuals who already suffer from IBS.
"On the other hand, we now know for sure
that diets containing low fiber content
improve these symptoms significantly,"
Barbara said.

Signs Of Heart Attack You Must Know

Understanding the signs of a heart attack can save a life. Heart attacks are silent killers and anyone can be a victim.
Lack of exercise, poor diet and an erratic
lifestyle can increase the risk of a heart
attack.
Signs and symptoms of a possible heart
attack:
When you start feeling heaviness in
your chest, unbearable upper stomach
pain, left arm pain, jaw and neck pain
and shortness of breath, you must rush
to the nearest hospital and get your ECG
done. There are several cases where
individuals have brushed it aside but it
is important to get immediate medical
assistance.
The other warning signs include the
feeling of nausea, breaking into a cold
sweat and light-headedness. You may
also experience intense pressure on the

604.510.4088

chest or feeling like your chest is closing

in on you.
In men, the most common warning sign of a
heart attack is chest pain; while women are
more likely to experience breathlessness,

nausea, and back and jaw pain.

In case you experience any of these
symptoms or if you are a witness call
911or rush the concerned person to the
nearest hospital.

For Woman

Have Perfect Skin

1. You have to make sure that your diet

is healthy and enriched with vitamins
and minerals that are vital for your skin.
Vitamins A and C are highly important
when it comes to keeping the skin looking
fresh, smooth and glowing. Good health is
an important part of having beautiful skin.
2. In order for you to have perfect skin,
your diet also needs to consist of fruits,
vegetables, eggs, cocoa products and
rice. All these items will help you achieve
perfect skin. It is also important that you
do not forget to drink lots of milk, as it will
help to make your skin glow. In addition, it
is important that you avoid stress because
it makes a persons skin age faster.
3. It is important to protect your skin
from the sun. You should always wear
sunscreen whenever you are out in the
sun. It is also important that you try
using sunscreen, which is face-friendly.
In addition, a person should evenly
apply the sunscreen on their body. Do
not apply a huge amount of sunscreen or
you will end up shining all day long. Just
follow the directions on the bottle and
apply just the right amount.
4. When trying to achieve perfect skin,
it is important that you first find out the
type of skin you have, whether it is dry,
oily or sensitive. You can read up on
your skin type on the internet or inquire
answers from a dermatologist. Each type

of skin requires a different type and level

of care.
5. The type of soap, moisturizer or
cleanser that you use has to be appropriate
for your skin. It is not necessary that you
use a toner for you to have perfect skin.
In addition, you must try your level best
to avoid chemicals that are not good for
your skin type.
6. In order for you to have perfect skin,
you must wash your face and body
regularly. It is better if you use some
type of cleanser or soap. A good cleanser
should be organic. A person has to choose
very carefully the type of cleanser they
want to use.
7. It is not always necessary that you use
soap or cleansers when washing your
skin. Plain water is a great skin cleanser
on its own. Hot water is ideal for oily
types of skin whereas warm or lukewarm
water is good for other types of skin. You
should wash your face in the morning
after you wake up and at night before
you go to bed. It is also important that
you wash your face at regular intervals
like in the afternoon, after work or after
school. Your hands have to be clean
when you wash your face or you will just
spread bacteria and dirt onto your skin.
8. It is important to treat your skin. You
can treat your skin at least once a week
using items such as face masks. Steaming

Detox Cheat Sheet

If your sweet tooth is nagging, try: frozen

If youre craving chocolate, try:
cacao nibs, otherwise known as real
chocolate
If youre desperate for coffee, try:
roasted dandelion root this is a good
liver-friendly substitute
If youre craving carbs, try: a cup
of cinnamon tea. Cinnamon helps
to regulate blood sugar levels and
consequently dampens the need for
carbohydrates
If you want a snack, try: baked sweet
potato chips. Slice, bake in the oven at
230C for 20 minutes. Season with sea
salt
Week 3: Final countdown

more comfortable with the diet and
will probably be starting to feel
the benefits. Any early withdrawal
symptoms should subside and, as
they do, you will have more energy,

youre drinking plenty of water and
exercising as much as you can.

BREAKFAST: a hearty vegetable
omelette with tomato, mushrooms,
spring onions, capsicum and zucchini,
and green tea
SNACK: 20 mixed raw nuts plus
peppermint tea
LUNCH OPTIONS: Roasted seasonal
vegetable, quinoa and black bean salad
SNACK: Sliced pear with almond spread
DINNER: Chicken and seasonal
vegetable stir-fry with snow peas,
asparagus, red onion and carrots. You
can indulge in some kitchen creativity
by using fresh garlic, ginger, coriander
and tamari soy sauce to add some bite
and depth of flavour to the meal
Tip: Get juicing. The colour youre
looking for is green as the chlorophyl in
these juices acts as an efficient detoxifier
once it enters the blood.

is also a good way of effectively treating

your skin. It is however important that
you choose skin treatments that best
suit your skin type or you could endup doing more damage. Whenever you
treat your skin, it is important that you
follow directions and instructions. Some
treatments are extreme and can damage
your skin if done incorrectly. Having
the perfect skin involves implementing
the right kind of skin treatments. Some
beauty products do more than good.
Sticking to natural products offers the
best chance of having perfect skin.
9. In order for you to have perfect skin,
it is important that you exfoliate at
least twice a week. Having the perfect
skin means exfoliating the dead skin
off your face. Dead flakes tend to trap
bacteria and oils that are present in the
skin, which lead to skin acne. You can
exfoliate your skin using a peel or scrub.
You should do this gently or otherwise it
will lead to negative results.
10. Having perfect skin means sticking
to organic foods and drinking lots of
water. Water helps to flush out any dirt
and chemicals that could be present in
the skin. Natural foods are the essential
when it comes to good skin care.
If you can follow the above tips, then
you can be on your way to having perfect
skin.

330ml coconut water

avocado, diced
ripe banana, sliced
1 tbsp lime juice
1 tbsp coconut oil
1 tbsp organic honey
A few mint leaves (optional)
Pour coconut water into a blender and
add the diced avocado, sliced banana
and lime juice.
Add the honey and coconut oil. Blend
for 1 minute.
Add a few sprigs of fresh mint according
to taste (optional). Blend for a further
1 minute or until ingredients have a
smooth consistency. Pour into a tall glass
and enjoy.
Post detox
Hopefully, you will feel so revived you
wont rush back into your old eating
habits. Make a conscious effort to
continue these clean- eating principles.
By all means, enjoy a cup of coffee or
a glass of wine, just dont overdo it. A
good rule to live by is 80/20: 80 per cent
wholefood, 20 per cent indulgence. Dust
off that bikini and hit the beach this year

Boys vs. Girls: Who's Harder to Raise

Can we finally answer the great

parenting debate over which sex is more
challenging to raise?
I often say that I spend more time and energy
on my one boy than on my three girls. Other
mothers of boys are quick to say the same.
Forget that old poem about snips and snails
and puppy dog tails, says Sharon, a mom of
three boys. Somehow it's been changed to
boys being made of "fights, farts, and video
games,' and sometimes I'm not sure how
much more I can take!"
Not so fast, say moms of girls, who point
out that they have to contend with fussier
fashion sense, more prickly social
navigations, and a far greater capacity to
hold a grudge. And as a daughter grows,
a parent's concerns range from body
image to math bias.
Stereotyping, or large kernels of truth? "I
think parents use 'which is harder?' as an
expression of whatever our frustration
is at the moment," says family therapist
Michael. "Boys and girls are each harder
in different ways."
Every child is an individual, of course.
His or her innate personality helps
shape how life unfolds. Environment
(including us, the nurturers) plays a role,
too: "There are differences in how we
handle boys and girls right from birth,"
says David, a professor of psychology.
"We tend to talk more softly to girls and
throw boys in the air."
But it's also true that each gender's brain,
and growth, unfolds at a different rate,
influencing behavior. Some parents raise
girls and boys differently because girls
and boys are so different from birth -their brains aren't wired the same way.
So, can we finally answer the great
parenting debate over which sex is more

604.510.4088

challenging to raise? Much depends on

what you're looking at, and when:
Discipline
Who's harder? Boys
Why don't boys seem to listen? Turns out
their hearing is not as good as girls' right
from birth, and this difference only gets
greater as kids get older. Girls' hearing
is more sensitive in the frequency range
critical to speech discrimination, and the
verbal centers in their brains develop
more quickly. That means a girl is likely
to respond better to discipline strategies
such as praise or warnings like "Don't
do that" or "Use your words." Boys tend
to be more tactile -- they may need to
be picked up and plunked in a time-out
chair. They're also less verbal and more
impulsive, which is especially evident in
the toddler and preschool years.
These
developmental
differences
contribute to the mislabeling of normal
behavior as problematic, a growing
number of observers say. Five boys
for every one girl are diagnosed with a
"disorder" (including conduct disorder,
bipolar disorder, hyperactivity, attention
deficit disorder, sensory integration
disorder, and oppositional defiant
disorder). Some kids -- most often boys
-- may simply fall on the more robust end
of normal. They need more opportunities
to expend energy and aggression, as well
as firmer limits.
Physical safety
Who's harder? Boys
"Much after-dinner wrestling here,"
reports Michelle, mom of four boys, ages
5 to 12. "I'm constantly fighting to keep
my house a home rather than an indoor
sports center. Their stuffed animals'
primary function is to be added to the

info@fijitimescanada.com

pile of pillows everyone is launching into

from the coffee table." In general, boys
are more rambunctious and aggressive,
experts say. Taking risks lights up the
pleasure centers of their brains. Many
parents find they have to keep a closer
eye on what a son is "getting into," or
use more bandages.
But letting kids explore -- at the cost of a
few scrapes and cuts -- builds character,
self-confidence, resilience, and selfreliance. Boys, being natural risk takers,
may need encouragement to slow down
a little, but maybe girls need to be
encouraged to take more risks. Look for
opportunities for your daughter to jump
off a wall, swim in the deep end, or try
the bigger slide.
Communication
Who's harder? First boys, then girls
From birth, a girl baby tends to be
more interested in looking at colors
and textures, like those on the human
face, while a boy baby is drawn more
to movement, like a whirling mobile.
These differences play out in the way
kids draw: Girls tend to use a rainbow
of hues to draw nouns, while boys lean
toward blue, black, and silver for their
more verb-like pictures of vehicles
crashing and wars.) In a nutshell, girls
are rigged to be people-oriented, boys to
be action-oriented. Because girls study
faces so intently, they're better at reading
nonverbal signals, such as expression
and tone of voice. Boys not only learn to
talk later than girls and use more limited
vocabularies, they also have more
trouble connecting feelings with words.
"While most girls share their feelings and
details of events, my three sons honestly
don't see that as important. I spend my
days asking, 'What happened then?' or
'What did he say after you said that?"
Important note: Because boys hold eye
contact for shorter periods than girls,
parents may worry about autism, since this
can be a red flag. It's a relief for moms to
know that this is normal and comes from
the way the brains are set up.
As girls get to be 8 or so, things can get
harder: The flip side of being so adept at
communicating is that girls exert a lot of
energy on it. There can be a great deal of
drama around who's mad at whom, who
said what and why, and more. Start when
your daughter's a toddler to establish an
open communication, so she learns she
can come to you for advice.

Aries

The week starts out friendly enough as

you enjoy the company of people you
like. Unfortunately, a simple comment
has the potential to trigger an unpleasant
encounter. Whatever anger emerges is
not really about this week. You're dealing
with an old story that may finally be
ready to be resolved. A wicked sense of
humour may not be entirely appreciated
now. Behind the smiles may be feelings
that are less than positive. Breathe
deeply, step back, and you'll see what's
really going on here.

Taurus

This is good time. Doesn't that mean

you're not supposed to be hassled? Take
the offensive. Cut out those people who
never seem satisfied with you. If they
are relatives or others who are close,
then just try spending less time with
them. Make the evenings time for a new
experiences. Break the old routine and
try something completely different, such
as the opera, country line dancing, or a
hockey game. Changing habits is a good
way to change your life.

Gemini

Travel is on the agenda now. If you can't

get out of town, rent a foreign movie.
A foreign person, too, could be on the
schedule this week. Communication may
require some extra effort, but you've got
more than words to get your point across.
Gestures, sounds, and body language are
all ways to convey a message. Nothing
succeeds like excess nights.

Cancer

Physical risks are not usually your cup

of tea. This week, however, you may be
challenged to push your limits. Some
wild person may not inspire confidence,
even though you could be fascinated by
such a different view of reality. New
experiences are meant to open you to
unusual tastes, pleasures, and ideas. You
could be very surprised by how attracted
you are to this strange, new world.
A generous friend may finance these
adventures now.

Leo

This is a great week to be in full social

mode. All your Leo charm is ready for
full display. Excellent friends make for
an excellent time now. Expect some
debate early on. It's probably not worth
your effort to battle over trivia. Spend
your time planning for an extravagant
evenings. On weekend, you must push
the fun limit? A little excess is part of
what life is about, dear Lion. Let yourself
roar loud and clear this week.

Virgo

Writing, talking, and short range travel

are high on the agenda in this week. Your
wit can be on display now, but could
prove too cutting for a sensitive person.
What you find funny and innocent might
be taken the wrong way. Discretion can
help you avoid conflict. Nights are good
time to combine business and pleasure.
Dinner with a colleague or potential
partner is a great way to spend the
evenings. Generosity is appreciated, but
excess can prove embarrassing.

Capricorn

Libra

In this week - you're not supposed to

think about money! Nevertheless, it's
a perfect week for coming up with a
plan to increase your resources. Have
a garage sale, sell something, or just do
a little bargain shopping of your own.
Some conversations, however, may
seem a little strange to you at this time.
You're talking "apples" and others are
talking "oranges." Naturally, this can
be frustrating. Your task is to stay calm
enough to get the answers you need.

Scorpio

Someone you thought you trusted may

hurt you with words. Whether these
words are spoken to your face or behind
your back, your reactions may be pretty
strong. There are two sides to this. One
is that you're just extra sensitive in this
week. Normally, you'd either shrug this
off or fight back with your impressive
intellectual arsenal. The other possibility
is that you really have been wronged,
that a confidence was broken, and with
it, possibly a friendship.

Sagittarius

It's possible that your attempts to go

out and get some things done meet with
obstacles this week. Just as you open
the door to leave, the phone rings, and
you're off in another direction. The
strategy is to keep your schedule light.
Save time for finishing up little matters
of detail. Nights you can throw caution
to the wind and party hardy. A festive
event can be just what you need now to
lift you above life's mundane matters.

This is a good fix-it week, and you're

a good fix-it person. You may need an
expert to help with the car, your bike,
or the boat, but the rest is under your
control. It's time to get at that basement,
attic, or closet that's been driving you
crazy. Tear, rip, toss and clean. Ah,
doesn't that feel better? Now go get
yourself a treat for all of your hard work.
Nights are for pleasure. Put the work
away by sundown, and go out and play.
Physical activities are appropriate for
you in this week. To avoid any problems,
make sure to carefully check all
equipment. You may meet someone who
strikes you as overly critical or unfair.
I know you hate injustice, but don't get
lost in the words. He or she has wounds
too deep to discuss openly, and this is
why such negativity is coming through.
It's not about you, so don't fall for the
bait. An extravagant outing is perfect for
nights.
Did you ever wonder how you happened
to be born into your family? I'm sure
there are times when you feel like your
relatives might as well have come from
another planet. Well, think of them as
a show, and a strange one. You'll avoid
fruitless conflict this week if you can
keep an attitude of detachment. Think
of yourself as a visiting scientist who is
studying an exotic foreign culture. Then
go out and spoil yourself rotten nights.
