EASY-CARE IS TRUMPS
Today, as well as fashion, practical aspects have a decisive effect
on buying patterns. Demands focus on functional qualities such as
elasticity and comfort, combined with the wish for textiles to be
easy to care for.
Cotton still plays a vital role as a fibre in textile industry; like all
cellulose fibres, it stands out for its excellent physiological wearing
qualities. However, its positive qualities come up against two large
disadvantages. On one hand, there is its tendency to crease, which
can be more or less pronounced depending on the type of fibre and
the construction of the textile, and, on the other hand, the fact that
garments lose their shape after being washed.
Who wants to voluntarily spend their precious free time standing at
the ironing board? Who isnt annoyed if a fabric bought at high cost
already shrinks after the first wash and loses its shape?

CHT-easy-care finishes support the consumers wish for easy-care,

easy-iron textiles which retain their shape.
In this brochure, we present the CHT-easy-care finish programme.
As well as modern cross-linking agents and catalysts, our portfolio
comprises special softeners and handle modifiers, providing
functional support for ideal treatment effects.
The CHT-Comfort-Finish, in particular, keeps fabrics in shape, provides excellent crease recovery and long-lasting softness, creating
high-quality textiles which are extremely comfortable to wear.
Our brochure on easy-care finishes not only presents our high-performance product range; with its supplementary guidelines on product application it also serves as a well-substantiated compendium.

Head of Finishing, Innovation and Services

EASY-CARE FINISHES FOR TOP RESULTS

Today, above all else, fashion must be uncomplicated and easy to
care for. As well as giving them the latest look; consumers also
expect fabrics to make their life easier. Nobody enjoys ironing any
more: the motto is wash and wear. Your favourite blouse or best
shirt goes in the washing machine to be worn again the next day.
This leaves plenty of time for the important things in life thanks to
CHTs easy-care finishes.
CELLULOSE IN TOP FORM WORLD-WIDE
Cotton and viscose are popular with consumers worldwide.
These fibres and their blends are extremely comfortable to wear,
even if they do not naturally retain their shape well. The various
treatments are what make the soft, silky fibres easy to care for,
helping them retain their shape the way modern textiles do.
TAILOR-MADE RECIPES
With a wide range of treatment agents and processes, the CHTgroup provides ideal easy-care comfort for cellulose fibres and their
blends. Our perfectly harmonised cross-linking agents and catalysts
efficiently produce easy-iron textiles which retain their shape. Combined with specially selected softeners and handle modifiers, this
creates highly efficient finishing effects. The recipes can be adapted
to your particular needs to produce tailor-made textile finishes!

ONLY THE BEST properties FOR YOUR TEXTILES

Highly comfortable to wear, especially easy to care for and with a fashionable look with their versatile advantages, easy-care textiles
outrival untreated ones.

improved shape and dimension stability

Consumers place great value on textiles which retain their shape; after all, who
wants a garment which shrinks after only a few washes, or stretches and loses its
shape? Moreover, very good shrink-resistance is required for goods to appear
smooth at the seams or in places where they are glued to linings.

LOWER TENDENCY TO CREASE

Cellulose fibres swell during the washing process, change their position in relation
to one another and do not return to their original position after drying this is how
creases occur. Thanks to easy-care finishes, on one hand the fibres capacity for
swelling is reduced, and on the other, the cross-linking gives it greater resiliency, so
the textile smoothes itself out after every wash.

LESS COLOUR CHANGE ESPECIALLY AFTER WASHING

When washing with cleaning agents containing optical brighteners, colour changes
are less noticeable, as the brighteners have considerably less exhaust on fibres with
an easy-care finish. Thanks to the lower capacity to swell, the dyes are not washed
out (wash greying) as quickly.

EASIER TO IRON
After washing, whether air-dried or tumble-dried, easy-care textiles are less creased,
and can be ironed far more easily for this reason alone. Furthermore, carefully selected
additives make the iron glide across the textiles with little effort.

SOFTER AND SMOOTHER

The reduced swelling capacity of easy-care textiles means that when the washing is
spin-dried, more water is spun out than compared with untreated goods. The fabric
dries faster and feels softer and smoother.

CHT

| Bezema

BETTER WET FASTNESS FOR DYES AND PRINTS

Thanks to the lower swelling capacity, dyes and prints generally have better wet
fastness.

LOWER TENDENCY TO PILL, ESPECIALLY WITH CV AND CO/PES

FIBRE BLENDS
After only a few washes, you can already see the difference: easy-care textiles show
fewer signs of use and look new for longer. Amongst other things, this is due to the
lower tendency to pill, especially for blends with synthetic fibres.

MORE WASH-RESISTANT GLOSS AND EMBOSSING EFFECTS

Gloss and embossing effects are also retained, even after frequent washing, as the
fibres capacity to absorb water, and thus their potential to swell, is considerably
reduced.

IMPROVED PERMANENCE OF SOFTENERS, STIFFENING AGENTS,

WATER- AND OIL-REPELLeNT AGENTS
Easy-care resins have a cross-linking effect on polymer dispersions or softening
agents. More cross-linking generally means that their effect is retained in the textile
even after frequent washing.

THE RIGHT PROCESS, STEP BY STEP

Expert knowledge of the recipe and process engineering are the key to success, whether in the field of standard dry curing process or the
innovative CHT-Comfort-Finish process.

DRY curing process

With dry curing process, the cross-linking reaction takes place
with the woven or knitted fabric in a dry condition. This means the
textiles are impregnated on the padder, then dried and fixed. In the
case of conventional dry curing process the fabrics are first dried
on the stenter frame. The fixing step is carried out separately on
what is known as a curing machine (e.g. a hot flue). In the flash
curing process, drying and fixing take place in one step on the
stenter frame.
The final sanforization makes the goods softer and smoother.

CHT-COMFORT-FINISH

THE CHT-Comfort-Finish IS SUITABLE FOR

This innovative process can create textiles requiring almost no

ironing. The crease-resistant effects can be produced in steps
which are comparatively easy to control and almost attain the
effectiveness of moisture curing process.

easy-iron to non-iron shirts and blouses

easy-iron trousers
non-iron bed linen
easy-care workwear

The success of the process also depends on the quality of the

texile and its original strength. If the fabric is pre-treated with liquid
ammonia, this has a positive effect on the crease and abrasion
resistance of the CHT-Comfort-Finish.
ALL THE ADVANTAGES AT A GLANCE
extremely high effect level on cellulose fibres and their blends
with synthetic fibres
good ratio between effect/loss of strength
simple process
good reproducibility
saves energy compared with conventional moisture
curing process
low formaldehyde values (< 75 ppm according to Law 112)

FOUR IMPORTANT COMPONENTS ACT TOGETHER

Easy-care recipes are usually made up of four components:
CROSS-LINKing Agents
CATALYSTS
ADDITIVES
SURFACTANTS

CROSS-LINKing Agents
Cross-linkers are substances which create fixed bonds between the cellulose fibres
thanks to chemical reactions. The result is that the cotton or viscose does not swell
up as much in water and retains its shape better. Most cross-linking agents are
derived from DMDHEU*.

CATALYSTS
Catalysts accelerate reactions. In the specific case of easy-care finishes, catalysts
ensure that the cross-linking reactions take place in the usual temperature ranges
for textile finishing (130180C). Magnesium chloride is used mostly.
CHT product selection
Magnesium chloride (Standard)
CHT-Catalyst FS Catalyst for dry cross-linking and the one-step

ADDITIVES
Additives complement the effect of the cross-linker with different characteristics.
Softeners and smoothening agents not only improve the handle of the fabric, but
also compensates for lost resistance to tearing and abrasion as much as possible.
Other additives serve to modulate a certain characteristic of the goods, e.g.
stiffeners, filling agents, oil-repelling agents etc.
For easy-care treatments, cross-linkable silicones are of special importance more
than anything else, as they can considerably boost the anti-crease effects.

SURFACTANTS
There should be emulsifiers, surface-active agents or stabilisers in every easy-care
finish recipe, as only they can allow the woven or knitted fabric to be wetted quickly
during impregnation, enabling the liquor to be evenly distributed. This is especially
true of pigment printed textiles. As well as their wetting qualities, the non-ionic
surfactants also have emulsifying characteristics. A low foaming is a sign of quality.

and metal salts

Special polyethylene emulsion

Silicone elastomer for improving the handle

of CEL, WO and synthetic fibres as well as
their blends. Soft handle and stability to
washing and dry cleaning as well as outstanding resiliency and highest sewability
improvements stand out for fabrics finished
with ARRISTAN 66. It is highly suitable for
easy-care finishes. ARRISTAN 66 is sensitive to alkali so that the pH values of the
liquors have to be adjusted to pH 5 6.
ARRISTAN 66 is preferably used in padding
processes.

Special catalyst for the 2-step CHT-ComfortFinish process. Due to the strongly acid
reaction the product has to be rinsed out
of the fabric after curing.

ARRISTAN AC (a liq)
Self-cross-linking acrylate dispersion
ARRISTAN AC is a finishing agent for all
types of fibres. It forms soft to medium
hard films after thermal treatment. These
films are not soluble in organic solvents
and are very resistant to washing at the
boil. ARRISTAN AC is highly suitable as
auxiliary to prevent curling up on cut parts
and also helps to reduce the tendency of
pilling.
ARRISTAN ACS (a liq)
Self-cross-linking acrylate dispersion
Same properties as ARRISTAN AC, the
films after thermal treatment are however
medium to hard.
ARRISTAN HM (n liq)
Vinylacetate copolymer in aqueous
dispersion
ARRISTAN HM is a finishing agent for filling
finishes with good washing stabilities. Higher
application amounts do not have a stiffening
effect on the product, its full handle and
elasticity remains. ARRISTAN HM does not
cause post-yellowing on full white fabrics.
ARRISTAN PMD (d liq)
Micro dispersion of a modified
polyurethane
Polymer finishing agent for padding proces
ses. The product is self-cross-linking due
to its chemical constitution and forms very
soft, resilient films without the addition of
special catalysts. ARRISTAN PMD is an
additive with multiple application for textiles
in finishing. It is applied as additive in easycare finishing to improve the crease resistance, as modifier to achieve interesting
handle effects and as additive to improve
technological properties (e.g. rubbing
fastness, pilling etc.)

CHT-CATALYST FS (o liq)
Metal salt with organic additives
The product is a special catalyst for the
easy-care finishing with a low content of
formaldehyde which considerably reduces
the content of free formaldehyde on textile
according to Japanese Law 112 in comparison to the conventional cryst. magnesium chloride.

Sewing additive for all kinds of fibres. Even

on very fine knits the number of mesh
breakages is considerably reduced or completely prevented. The handle of the goods
is pleasantly soft. POLYAVIN PEN is excellently suitable for easy-care finishing and to
improve the abrasion and tear strength.
REAKNITT BC (o liq)
Modified DMDHEU
Reactant resin for easy-care finishes of
fabrics made of cellulose fibres and their
blends with synthetics. Special product for
the CHT-Comfort-Finish process (1-step

REAKNITT CF (o liq)

Aqueous solution of inorganic compounds

Modified DMDHEU

CHT-CATALYST ODL is a special catalyst

for the formaldehyde-free easy-care finishing and it is recommended exclusively for
REAKNITT ZF. The garlic odour occasionally
arising with cryst. magnesium chloride is
not to be expected with application of
CHT-CATALYST ODL according to our
experience.

Reactant resin for easy-care finishes of

fabrics made of cellulose fibres and their
blends with synthetics. Suitable for dry
curing process if good chlorine fastness
is required. Well suited for the 2-step CHTComfort-Finish process.

KOLLASOL CDO (n liq)

Hydrophilic silicone surface-active
substances mixed with higher alcohols
Deaerator and penetration accelerator with
excellent foam inhibiting properties and a
high electrolyte stability. The product
doesnt affect water- and oil repellency and
thus it is perfectly suited for fluorocarbon
containing finishing recipes.
KOLLASOL HV (n liq)
Combination of fatty alcohols, fatty alcohol
ethoxylates and fatty alcohol alkoxylates
Penetration accelerator and wetting agent
with excellent low foaming properties for
finishing and easy-care finish. KOLLASOL HV
causes an immediate penetration of the
material and makes the finishing chemicals
get evenly absorbed. KOLLASOL HV has a
very good emulsifying capacity and acts as
solubiliser for finishing components.

REAKNITT FF (o liq)
Modified DMDHEU
Cross-linking agent for the easy-care finishes
of fabrics made of cellulose fibres and their
blends with synthetics. If used properly, very
low formaldehyde contents will result on
the fabric, so that ko-Tex Standard 100
will be achieved (according to Japanese
Law 112: HCHO < 75 ppm).
REAKNITT TIO (o liq)
Reactant resin with integrated catalyst
system for a low formaldehyde easy-care
finish on cellulose fibres and their blends
with synthetics
Due to the one-component system no
catalyst needs to be added. Therefore the
handling is clearly simplified and possible
error sources are minimised. Effects
achieved with REAKNITT TIO have a very
good wash durability because of the
hydrolysis stability. Moreover, the finishes
produce a neutral handle without stiffening.
The product has a long time shelf life (at
least for six months) and low emissions.

REAKNITT ZF (o liq)

TUBINGAL CRT (psc liq)

TUBINGAL SMF (n/c liq)
