Final Examination ()
Academic Year: 2014-2015
( 25 Marks)
(a) A 25-mm diameter shaft is pulled through a cylindrical bearing as shown in Figure. The
lubricant that fills the 0.3-mm gap between the shaft and bearing is oil having a kinematic

viscosity of 8.0 10 m / s and a specific gravity of 0.91. Determine the force required to pull
the shaft at a velocity of 3 m/s. Assume the velocity distribution in the gap is linear. ( 12 Marks)
(b) A closed cylindrical tank filled with water has a hemispherical dome and is connected to an
inverted piping system as shown in Figure. The liquid in the top part of the piping system has
a specific gravity of 0.8, and the remaining parts of the system are filled with water. If the
pressure gage reading at A is 60 kPa, determine: (i) the pressure in pipe B, and (ii) the pressure
head, in millimeters of mercury, at the top of the dome (point C)

Question (3)
(25 Marks)
(a) Derive an equation expressing the actual discharge of water with installing an orifice-meter a horizontal
pipeline.
(12 Marks)

(b) If viscous effects are neglected and the tank is large, determine the flow rate from the tank shown in Figure.

Question (4)
(25 Marks)
(a) Derive Bernoullis equation for an incompressible flow. Write the physical meaning of each term. What is the
difference between Bernoullis equation and energy equation of flow?
(7 Marks)
Solution
See your lectures
(b) For laminar flow through pipes, extract a relation between the friction coefficient and Reynolds number of flow.
(8 Marks)
Solution

(c) The pump shown in the Figure sucks water from the lower sump and delivers it to a storage tank of 60.96 m above the
sump. The steady water flow rate is registered to be
fitted elbows have the same dimensions.
(1) Determine the power that the pump adds to the water ( water = 0.001N .s / m ).

(2) After 10 years, the maintenance engineer noticed that the internal surface is covered with roughness of mean thickness 5

mm. Determine the new pump power.
3/1
Applying the energy equation between the water levels in the two tanks
E1 + Hpump = E 2 + h(losses )
P1 = P 2 = Patm = 0.0
V 1 = V 2 0.0
z1 z 2 + Hpump = ( Kent + Kvalve + 4 Kelbow + Kexit + f l / d )V 2 / 2 g
z1-z2= -60.96 m
Hpump = 76.2
60.96 + H pump = (0.8 + 5 + 4 1.5 + 1.0 + f 152.4 / 0.2286)V 2 / (2 9.81)
Q o = / 4 d 2 V = 0.16092m 3 / s
V = 3.91919 m/s
