Answer all the following Questions

Question (1)

( 25 Marks)

(a) A 25-mm diameter shaft is pulled through a cylindrical bearing as shown in Figure. The
lubricant that fills the 0.3-mm gap between the shaft and bearing is oil having a kinematic

viscosity of 8.0 10 m / s and a specific gravity of 0.91. Determine the force required to pull
the shaft at a velocity of 3 m/s. Assume the velocity distribution in the gap is linear. ( 12 Marks)

(b) A closed cylindrical tank filled with water has a hemispherical dome and is connected to an
inverted piping system as shown in Figure. The liquid in the top part of the piping system has
a specific gravity of 0.8, and the remaining parts of the system are filled with water. If the
pressure gage reading at A is 60 kPa, determine: (i) the pressure in pipe B, and (ii) the pressure
head, in millimeters of mercury, at the top of the dome (point C)

(c) The pump shown in the Figure sucks water from the lower sump and delivers it to a storage tank of 60.96 m above the
sump. The steady water flow rate is registered to be
fitted elbows have the same dimensions.

mm. Determine the new pump power.

3/1

Pipe length = 152.4 m

Pipe diameter = 0.2286 m

Applying the energy equation between the water levels in the two tanks
E1 + Hpump = E 2 + h(losses )

P1 / + V12 / 2 g + z1 + Hpump = P 2 / + V22 / 2 g + z 2 + h(losses )

P1 = P 2 = Patm = 0.0
V 1 = V 2 0.0
z1 z 2 + Hpump = ( Kent + Kvalve + 4 Kelbow + Kexit + f l / d )V 2 / 2 g
z1-z2= -60.96 m
Hpump = 76.2
60.96 + H pump = (0.8 + 5 + 4 1.5 + 1.0 + f 152.4 / 0.2286)V 2 / (2 9.81)

Q o = / 4 d 2 V = 0.16092m 3 / s
V = 3.91919 m/s

Re = d V / = 1000 3.91919 0.2286 / 0.001 = 895927 (fully turbulent flow)

From Moody Chart Re=895927 and smooth pipe, f=0.012
Hpump=77.24 m
(1) Power = Q o H pump = 1000 9.81 0.16092 75.05 = 118475.82 watt
To compute the new power with the presence of roughness Epselon/D=5/228.6=0.02
From Moody Chart at Re=895927 and rough pipe E/D= 0.02 , f=0.05
Hpump = 97.077
(2) New Power = Q o H pump = 1000 9.81 0.16092 97.077 = 153248.2 watt
