Translation Principles are a set of reference which should be used by translators. Translation Principles produce different varieties of translation such as literal translation, semantic translation, word-for-word translation, dynamic translation, idiomatic translation and communicative translation. The second topic is about Meaning and Translation. In Suryawinata's book TRANSLATION: Bahasan Teoris dan Penuntun Praktis Menerjemahkan, there are five kinds of meaning.

There are two topics I am going to present, Translation Principles, and Meaning and Translation. My first topic is about translation principles, a set of reference which should be used by translators although none of them are applicable to all the type of translation. The use of different principles produces different varieties of translation such as a literal translation, semantic translation, word-for-word translation, dynamic translation, idiomatic translation and communicative translation. In general, there are two main principles of translation based on Suryawinata and Hariyanto (2003: 57-58) faithful translation to the original author and faithful translation in the target language (reader). The first principle means a translator can bring his fellow country a true and clear picture of the foreign author and foreign circumstances, keeping strictly to the original. The second one s/he can treat the foreign work as a writer treats his material, altering it after his own tastes and convictions, so that it is brought closer to her/ his fellow. It means that a translator is also a writer; s/he has to have her/ his own tastes in literature, so that the reader can get the writers idea and information. The second topic is about meaning and translation. In Suryawinatas book TRANSLATION: Bahasan Teoris dan Penuntun Praktis Menerjemahkan, there are five kinds of meaning such as: First, Lexical meaning, the basic meaning of the word. Usually we can find this kind of meaning in dictionary. Second, grammatical meaning, Meaning derived from the formation, arrangement or sequence of words in a phrase or sentence, its produced by additive or arrangement between one word with another word. Third, textual meaning which is determined by its relation to other words in a sentence. E.g hand me your paper! vs Hands up! Forth, contextual/situational meaning, the meaning arises from the situation or context in which the phrase, sentence, or phrase is used. And the last is sociocultural meaning, formed by the local culture (lifestyle) or also have a certain social charges. This kind of information is very useful, especially for me as a student of English Education department, who always relates with foreign language (English) in order doing assignments, writing research proposal or thesis because most of the sources used are English books. Although for this presentation I used only one book as source, but I think this book is easy
enough to understand, and this book also provide detail information for the readers.
