INTRODUCTION
SBI, largest commercial bank of India, had been losing market share to private and
foreign banks in the last decade. It was even predicted that private banks will
overtake SBI in terms of deposits in a span of four years. However, by 2010 SBI had
more than doubled its profits, regained market share and became one of the
strongest banks in Asia-pacific region. SBI today is one of the largest employers in
the country with an extensive network in both urban and rural areas. No other bank
has the reach in rural India with SBI has achieved. The tremendous amount of trust
people have with SBI is a remarkable feat on its own.
The change is attributed mainly to the successful adaptation to the changing market
scenario enabled by transformation from a manual ledger based system to an IT
enabled system; focussing more on customer sales and services. As a result,
workforce became more specialized, number of services offered increased, data
storage, transfer, its interpretation, and data mining were incorporated. It has also
impacted the culture of the organisation making it more robust and with the advent of
technology, making the people more answerable and committed towards their work.
In 2006, O. P. Bhatt took over as the Chairman of SBI and took upon himself to bring
back the glory of SBI back to its age old era. He took several measures to improve
the organisation such as making various new verticals in the structure and
introducing new products.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS
By conducting the study on SBI, we will able to understand and explore the
organizational changes due to changes in technology and its impact on the efficiency
and effectiveness of an organization by making some of the erstwhile tasks
redundant. Additionally, meeting with employees of the Head Office of SBI in
Lucknow will further augment our thought process by enriching learning and practical
experience. It will act as a bridge between our theoretical knowledge and the
implementation of the real time situations in an organization. Moreover, it will enable
us to learn how the deployment of core banking solutions helped to standardize its
operations and services into a single, centralized homogenous network thereby
increasing its profitability and customer-centricity through innovative services.
Henceforth, this study organises an evolving issue of real-world and noteworthy area
of study.
