is the force exerted upon the charge q? If we place another charge q at distance d (d > b) outside the shell, what
will be the force exerted upon q ?
7-A uniform line charge with density (C/m) is parallel to an innite dielectric cylinder with radius = a and
relative permittivity r on the z-axis. The distance between the line charge and the axis of cylinder is d (d > a).
Use the theory of images to nd the surface density of bound charges and the force exerted upon the line charge
per unit length.
Hint: Show that in order to nd the potential outside the cylinder, we can replace the cylinder with a line
charge = rr 1
+1 located at d = a /d from the axis plus a line charge located on the axis of the cylinder.
Moreover, the potential inside the cylinder can be found if we replace the original line charge at distance d with
r
a line charge = 2
and ll the entire space with dielectric.

8-A grounded conducting sphere with radius a is centered at origin. A uniformly charged circular disk with
radius b and surface density s is perpendicular to the x-axis at distance d from the origin (d > a). Show that the
loci of image charges is a spherical surface. Find the total charge induced on the grounded sphere. If the sphere
was isolated and uncharged, what would be its potential?
9-() An electric dipole with moment p = p0 z is located at point z = d on the z-axis inside a grounded
conducting sphere with radius a (d < a). Find the potential V (r, ) inside the sphere using the method of images.
