Sustainability achievements

- Reduce the future operating costs of the Centre by disassembling the wings to
reduce the seats to only a seventh of the original capacity.
- Further reduction in the operating cost by allowing natural light.
- The aluminium roof has a 50 per cent recycled content
-The Aquatics Centre uses 32 per cent less potable water compared to other
pools recycling water.

Architecture Design Concept

The architecture is protective from the outside and

porous on the inside. While giving a strong, hard
shell to the outside, the architecture opens up within
as a series of sheltered courtyards that bring softly
controlled daylight down into all of the spaces. A
system of layering and buffered zones creates soft
transitions from the hot and glaring exterior to cool
and filtered interiors.

The architecture orients to the sun and wind conditions. The crystalline masses of the
PROPORTIONAL TENDENCIES THE COMPONENTS
architectural cells rises up towards the south, west, and east, shielding internal spaces
from direct sun, while the courtyards within oriented to the north and northwest to bring in
indirect light to the spaces below. The wind catchers rise continuously towards the south,
progressively catching the winter and spring winds, helping to further cool the building
facades and outdoor spaces in the more temperate seasons of the year.
