UNIT PLAN FOR GRADE 10 SCIENCE

Unit 1

(Biology)

STANDARDS
Content: The learners demonstrate an

understanding of:
1. Organisms as having feedback mechanisms,
which are coordinated by the nervous and
endocrine systems
2. How these feedback mechanisms help the
organism maintain homeostasis to
reproduce and survive
3. The information stored in the DNA as being
used to make proteins
4. How changes in a DNA molecule may cause
changes in its product
5. Mutations that occur in sex cells as being
heritable
6. How evolution through natural selection can
result in biodiversity
7. The influence of biodiversity on the stability
of ecosystems
8. An ecosystem as being capable of
supporting a limited number of organisms

Performance (Focus): The learners are able to

illustrate through a media presentation the
importance of adaptation as a mechanism for the
survival of species.

Enduring Understanding: The learners will understand that:

1. The continuity of existence of species is influenced by how they respond to
external stimuli and how they maximize the ability of their major physiological
systems.
2. The traits of future species are affected by the changes in the DNA of the
parent species.
3. Survival of species results from their adaptation to the changes that the
ecosystems undergo and the kind of biodiversity that the ecosystems have.
Essential Questions:
1. How do species avoid extinction?
2. Why is instinct important?
3. What determines the continuity of the existence of species?How?

Designer:

Jovanie A. Estrella

Formation: The Learners shall become reverent

to the creations of God.

TRANSFER GOAL: The Learners will be able to independently use their learning
to illustrate through a media presentation that adaptation is significant for species
to endure all the adversities that hinder them (species) from continuing their
existence as their (students) way to promote reverence to the Almighty creations.

Course Outline:
TARGET COMPETENCIES:

The Learners should be able to:

1. Describe the parts of the reproductive system and their functions;
2. Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male
reproductive systems;
3. Decribe the feedback mechanisms involved in regulating processes in
the female reproductive system (e.g. menstrual cycle);
4. Describe how the nervous system coordinates and regulates these
feedback mechanisms to maintain homeostasis;
5. Explain how protein is made using information from the DNA;
6. Explain how mutations may cause changes in the structure and
function of a protein;
7. Explain how fossil records, comparative anatomy, and genetic
information provide evidence for evolution;
8. Explain the occurrence of evolution;
9. explain how species diversity increases the probability of adaptation
and survival of organisms in changing environments;
10. explain the relationship between population growth and carrying
capacity; and
11.suggest ways to minimize human impact on the environment.
