Producers in areas that have experienced heavy rains may have concerns about nitrogen loss in
corn fields. Nitrogen losses occur by two main pathways: denitrification (gaseous loss of N) and
leaching of nitrate from soil through water leaving the tile line or into groundwater. An estimate This weeks ag report is

saturated conditions. Standing water is evidence of saturated soils, but even soils without standing
water are considered saturated if an individual cannot walk across without making footprints.
So the factors are: What N product was used. When was it applied. Soil moisture content. How far
along is the crop. Re-application could be considered, but not if the crop is well advanced.

2015 HUBBARDTON DAYS. Following a very successful and


exciting, fun filled Hubbardton 250th Birthday celebration last year,
the town of Hubbardton has decided it would like to have an annual
Hubbardton Days celebration.
So, the town has set the day this year for Saturday, July 18th,
starting at 4:00 pm, to have the 1st annual Hubbardton Days celebration. It will be held at the Hubbardton Battlefield, located on
Monument Hill Road in Hubbardton. Please remember to bring
lawn chairs or blankets for your convenience. In the event of rain,
the celebration will be held the next day, Sunday, July 19th same
place and time. There are activities scheduled for both children
and adults. Childrens games and contests will begin at 4:00 pm
and there will be prizes and surprises given out. At the same time,
for the adults, there will be a horseshoe throwing contest and also,
the extremely popular women only frying pan throwing
contest! This event was held last year and drew 23 competitors
and is bound to again, draw a lot of attention.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of the adult contests.
During the day, there will be fried bread dough, ice cream, hamburgers and hot dogs available to purchase. Other events will be a
raffle with ca$h prizes, music, visit with alpacas, and a 50 - 50
drawing. Also, the fun and exciting face painting lady, will once
again work her magic with her amazing creative art!!
Beginning at 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, a fantastic PIG-ROAST and
Chicken Barbecue, with all the fixins, hosted once again by Center Grange 290, will certainly fill your belly and put a smile on your
face getting you ready for the main event of the celebration. For
advanced tickets call 273-2651 or stop in Castleton Pet Supply, 700
Route 4A West, Castleton, Vt. You are also more than welcome to
bring a picnic supper and enjoy the AMAZING view while you
dine.
Taking center stage at 7:00 pm will be the popular, well known and
outstanding Celtic flavored musical group, GYPSY REEL. They
play high energy, world blend style music, and have performed all
over the Northeast from New York to Maine. They are in big demand, here in Vermont, from Derby Line to Brattleboro. They will
fill your musical tastes from 7:00pm to 9:00 pm, and will leave you
wanting more.
To close the evening off we have saved the best for last as
we present our FANTASTIC F * I * R * E * W * O * R
* K * S * display, which will captivate your imagination, and
thrill every bone in your body !!! The display will definitely equal
last years production, and promises to explode with a spectacular
climax to the evening, and close out the extravagant 1st annual

AL FRESCO A FABULOUS DINNER UNDER THE


STARS. On Saturday, July 25, Salem Courthouse Community
Center celebrates its 13th Al Fresco Dinner. This popular event is
a quality experience that comes together as a result of a dedicated
broad community effort. Each July, people from near and far gather
to celebrate all the good this rich agrarian region has to offer. At 5
pm, folks start to assemble on the side lawn surrounded by majestic
hills and verdant countryside. Crisp white tents radiate from the
historic old building like spokes protecting linen-covered tables lush
with local flowers and charmingly mismatched china.
While sipping wine and reaching out to friends, guests enjoy a
sumptuous selection of local artisan cheeses. Widely known
creameries including 3 Corner Field Farm, Argyle Cheese Farmer,
Consider Bardwell Farm, Cabot, Longview Farm and Sweet Spring
Farm provide the assorted cheeses for which this event has become
synonymous. Cheeses made from cow, sheep and goats milk are
offered on 3 large tables enhanced by glorious large-scale floral
arrangements. The popular Roadhouse Rhythm and Blues Band
will lure dancers to their feet with their horn-driven sound. Graceful
large-scale sculpture on loan from artists at Salem Art Works
provides points of interest on the side lawn. This years Great Hall
exhibit will focus on the Civil War in keeping with the many events
commemorating the 150th anniversary of the end of the war. A
highlight of the evening is the annual procession of the Mettawee
River Theater Company, charming guests with their whimsical
creatures large and small.
Throughout the evening, guests have the opportunity to bid on an
amazing assortment of goods and services on display in our Youth
Center/Activity Barn. Artwork, jewelry, Telescope outdoor furniture
and restaurant gift certificates are but a few of the 100 plus items
available. The Al Fresco Dinner has evolved into the most important
fundraising event for the Courthouse each year. Over 200
volunteers donate their time and energy to make it happen! Please
consider joining us in July to experience this wonderful celebration
of good food and community yourself. The $60 tickets will go on
sale Monday, June 1 at 9 am. Be sure to purchase your tickets

ARGYLE 4TH OF JULY PARADE- The Argyle J. A. Barkley Hose Co. Auxiliary is making plans
for the annual Independence Day Parade. The parade will be held on Saturday, July 4, at 11:00 a.m.
The theme for this years parade is PROUD TO BE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE. The
Auxiliary urges area families, churches, organizations and businesses to participate by entering floats
and/or marching units. Entry forms are needed for placement and for judging in the parade line-up.
We would also like to encourage our youth to enter the bicycle competition. No entry forms are
needed for this category, but we do need to stress that helmets are required for all participants.
As always, there will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for floats and bicycles based on the use of the
theme. For entry forms or if there are any questions, call 638-8667. Following the parade at 12:30
there will be a chicken BBQ where they will be serving the Argyle Firefighters famous BBQ chicken
at the firehouse on State Route 40. The Argyle Senior Citizens will be holding a dessert sale at the
United Methodist Church on Sheridan St. and the Library will be holding its annual book sale, also on
Sheridan St. Come show your patriotism and join in the fun!

POLO AND CLASSIC CARS: The Salem Volunteer Fire Department Inc. will be sponsoring a
combined Polo match and a classic/antique car fund raising event to be held on Saturday August 1, at
the Surya Polo Club at the intersection of NYS Rte 29 and Christie Rd in the town of Greenwich, NY
12834. The car event will start at 11am and the Polo match will start at 4pm with everything being done
by 5:30pm.

BEGINNER FISHING WORKSHOP: Cornell Cooperative


Extensions 4-H Youth Development program will be holding its
third segment for the Beginner Fishing Workshop on Wednesday, July 8th at 8:00 am at Hovey Pond in Queensbury, NY. In
this third session participants will learn how to bass fish. A brief
overview on the techniques of bass fishing will be given and then
we will fish the pond! The workshop is open to all youth between

GEARING UP FOR THEIR ANNUAL 3 DAY JULY 4TH
2015 ACTIVITIES.
The theme for the parade this year will be: 123rd Regiment Civil
War Homecoming. The carnival will start at 6pm on Thursday
July 2nd and Friday July 3rd at the carnival grounds on
Archibald St off from NYS RTE 22. Stop by and try some of the
delicious food that will be served or try your luck at one of the
many games for kids or adults. Also try your luck at winning by
buying a raffle ticket for one of the many donated prizes. Will
Linendoll will DJ on July 2nd & 3rd and Krystals Lytle DJ Service will DJ on the 4th. On Saturday July 4th our parade line-up
starts at 4pm at the Holy Cross church on North Main St (RTE
22). The parade will start at 5pm sharp and will go down Main
St. to Park Place to the carnival grounds on Archibald St.
As usual we are looking for a lot of floats for the parade, so if
you belong to a group, organization, or just a family put your thinking caps on and start designing your float, because that is what
makes up a parade along with a lot of music whether on a float or
marching.
There will be awards for the floats that come closest to the theme.
On July 4th at 9:30 pm there will be a large fireworks display
with a rain date of 9pm July 5th. If you are interested in being a

The Federal Convention convened in the State House


(Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on May 14, 1787, to
revise the Articles of Confederation. Because the delegations from only two states were at first present, the
members adjourned from day to day until a quorum of
seven states was obtained on May 25. Through discussion and debate it became clear by mid-June that, rather
than amend the existing Articles, the Convention would
draft an entirely new frame of government. All through
the summer, in closed sessions, the delegates debated,
and redrafted the articles of the new Constitution. Among
the chief points at issue were how much power to allow
the central government, how many representatives in
Congress to allow each state, and how these representatives should be elected--directly by the people or by the
state legislators. The work of many minds, the Constitution stands as a model of freedom for individuals under
the rule of law.

U.S. CONSTITUTION May 25, 1787, Freshly spread dirt
covered the cobblestone street in front of the Pennsylvania
State House, protecting the men inside from the sound of
passing carriages and carts. Guards stood at the entrances to
ensure that the curious were kept at a distance. Robert Morris of Pennsylvania, the "financier" of the Revolution, opened
the proceedings with a nomination--Gen. George Washington
for the presidency of the Constitutional Convention. The
vote was unanimous. The general expressed his embarrassment at his lack of qualifications to preside over such an
august body and apologized for any errors into which he
might fall in the course of its deliberations.
The Father of our Country had almost
remained at home. Instead, he helped
create a more perfect union.

Ratification. By January 9, 1788, five states of the nine necessary for ratification had approved the Constitution--Delaware,
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. But the
eventual outcome remained uncertain in pivotal states such as
Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia. On February 6,
withFederalists agreeing to recommend a list of amendments
amounting to a bill of rights, Massachusetts ratified by a vote
of 187 to 168. Although Massachusetts was now safely in the
Federalist column, the recommendation of a bill of rights was
a significant victory for the anti-Federalists. Six of the remaining states later appended similar recommendations. The United
States Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. It was ratified by nine
states in July of 1988. By December
1791 the Bill of Rights was ratified
by 3/4 of the states.

When James Madison helped shape a new constitutional system for the US, he and his fellow
framers had one overriding fear: tyranny.
They divided power among three branches: Legislative, Judicial and Administrative and created
lines of separation that would prevent concentration of power in any one branch. Understanding
human nature, they tried to create a system in which ambition would check ambition. However,
they knew that citizens could be deceived into giving up their freedoms. Madison warned future
generations that if tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a
foreign enemy. They knew how effective fear can be used to induce citizens to relinquish their
liberties. Recent years have proven them, once again, prophetic in their warnings.
The constitution is intended as a protection of individual rights, by preventing one branch from
assuming power, enough power to become tyrannical. No branch was given enough power to
govern alone. Checks and balances were established to prevent that event. Once power becomes
concentrated in the hands of a president, citizens are left only with the assurance that such
unchecked power will be used wisely. This event the framers repeatedly warned us to never accept.
Benjamin Franklin said it best when he warned that they who would give up essential Liberty, to
purchase a little temporary Safety, will receive neither Liberty nor Safety.
Despite these warnings, many people have embraced largely unchecked presidential powers under
the assurance that the rising security state will keep them safe. The shift of power to the presidency certainly did not start with the current president. The trend has been gaining ground for
decades. But, this administration has accelerated the troubling trend, seemingly without objection
from the other two branches. This has created a very dangerous situation.
For instance, warrantless surveillance has increased under this Presidency. War without declaration
was subverted in Libya because the current president declared only he has the right to define war.
(See the trickery here? He defines war, then the Congress gets to declare it. If an action is not
defined by the president as war, the Congress has no authority regarding that action. A basic tenant
of our Constitution boldly discarded.) The current president has asserted the right to kill any US
citizen without judicial involvement. (Citizens deemed by his administration to be terrorists) The
current presidency has placed our press corps under surveillance thereby intimidating another of
our freedoms, that of the Press. Claiming executive privilege, he has refused to turn over any
information to which congress is entitled, regarding a number of scandals. Included in those scandals is the vindictive abuse of power in utilizing the IRS as agents of retribution against political
enemies.
Elections have consequences. Seek out those who have established themselves as strict constitutionalists and put them in office if you wish to continue enjoying what this great country has
offered over the past two plus centuries.

METTAWEE RIVER THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES
TOUR DATES FOR OUT OF THE PAST: CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE METTAWEE JOURNEY Performances will take place at outdoor venues in upstate New York and
nearby Vermont and Massachusetts, and are scheduled from July
9 through July 21 (schedule attached). The production will include scenes and songs from four decades of Mettawee productions. There will be appearances by Aristophanes gluttonous dung
beetle, as well as Brechts forlorn lovers in THE CAUCASIAN
CHALK CIRCLE . The world will be created on the back of a
turtle; the great Irish sea god Mannanon will declaim the tragic tale
of Phaedra; and Grandmother Earth will send Nanabozho off to
get the world ready for humans, Archy the cockroach and his lowly
associates will share memorable moments from their illustrious
careers, and two long lost brothers will be reunited in VALENTYNE
AND ORSON . All these encounters will incorporate an abundance of Mettawees signature masks, puppets and giant figures.
According to Mettawee Artistic Director Ralph Lee, These headstrong characters have been clamoring to be let out of their boxes
for another fling in front of their fans, so I finally decided to let
them have their way. Here goes! I take no responsibility for their

METHODS AND INSPIRATION- Open Studio of Washington
County's fifth biennial, self-guided tour of 16 of the countys most
exceptional artists studios will be held Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19. In the popular admission-free event, scheduled for
10 a.m. 6 p.m. both days, professional artists scattered throughout the county invite the public into their studios, display their works
and chat with their visitors. Participants drive from studio to studio,
enjoying the scenery rolling hills, pastoral settings and beautiful
family farms reminiscent of Tuscany and the unique opportunity
to meet working artists in their studios. Each studio stop offers an
opportunity to see the artists' process, their inspiration, their technique, said Sue Sanderson, Open Studio's Executive Director. If
you've ever wondered why a piece of art a painting, a sculpture,
a photograph grabs your attention, our tour is your chance to see
wonderful works of art and actually engage in conversation with

CHAPMAN MUSEUMS SUMMER STODDARD MINIEXHIBIT FEATURES CAMP LIFE Some of the most intriguing photos that S. R. Stoddard took are images of camp life in
the Adirondacks in the 1870s and 80s. From his own excursions
in the mountains Stoddard was quite familiar with the rustic camping experience of that time. In his guide books he offered practical
advice for new campers, including the essentials of a complete
outfit. His photos capture the full range of camping options from
small lakeside tent sites to permanent camps that featured log leantos and even kitchens. The Chapman Museums new Stoddard miniexhibit, which will be on display through September 13th, features fifteen images of camp life ranging from Lake George to
Raquette Lake. Included are photos of the 1887 American Canoe
Association campsite on Lake Champlain, The Antlers and Camp
Pine Knot, and evening entertainment around Adirondack campfires. Also included in the exhibit is a small publication, Camp Life,
Twelve Photo-Gravures from Originals by S.R. Stoddard, published
in 1892. Stoddard sought to earn new revenue from his photographs, and photogravure offered him the opportunity to present
his works as more than mere souvenirs; rather, they were works of
art. Wrote the book reviewer for a literary magazine, The Writer,
Mr. Stoddard is unexcelled as a photographer of natural scenery,
and his pictures of woods and camp life are simply delightful. No
one who has ever traversed the Adirondack lakes and rivers or
camped in the woods of Maine can fail to be attracted by the charm
of these pictures.... Camp Life will be a perpetual delight to any
lover of outdoor life who may be fortunate enough to become its
possessor. The Chapman Historical Museum is located at 348
Glen Street, Glens Falls, NY. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10

COURTHOUSE TO HOST WASHINGTON COUNTY
BAND CONCERT on Friday, July 17 at 7 pm, the Salem
Courthouse Community Center will host the Washington County
Band (WCB) in the courtroom. This event will be the annual
benefit concert in memory of their long-time band member, Dick
Campbell. Active for over 30 years, the band is composed of
talented musicians from not only Washington County, but Warren,
Rensselaer, and Saratoga counties and many parts of Vermont
as well. The band is currently under the direction of Geoffrey
Gee. The WCB has a varied repertoire consisting of marches,
show tunes, ballads and big band medleys. All volunteers, the
band comes together for practice weekly from April through
August. It averages eight concerts at different locations each
season and has become a
perennial favorite with many dedicated fans.
