The 12th green at Lancaster Country Club and the 1761 Club can be seen from the walking bridge on the eighth hole. Chartered in
1900, LCC is one of Pennsylvanias oldest private clubs. Noted designer William Flynn set up the course in 1919, then came back to modify
it to take four of the holes over the Conestoga River after the purchase of additional land in 1938. Lancaster is far and away the most complicated architectural evolution of all of William Flynns courses, scholar Wayne Morrison has said of the venue. Flynn wanted limited run
off tee balls, so 14 of the 18 holes have tee shots that hit into upslopes. They can be slight or abrupt, and some punish a poor tee shot with
side slopes. On some holes the emphasis is on distance, with a need for long irons, or, on other holes, on placement. Truly, a golfer must
have a wide range of shots to succeed when playing LCC.

Fans cheer for eventual champion Michelle Wie on the 14th hole during the final round of the U.S. Womens Open golf tournament in Pinehurst, N.C., on June 22, 2014.

If youre going to be a spectator...

MIKE GROSS
SPORTS COLUMNIST

Rule number one: Dont wear high

heels.
Youd think this rule would be as obvious for golf spectators as, say, ballet
dancers or astronauts.
Yet I have never been to a pro golf
tournament where I didnt see at least
one person choosing the insouciant
chic of an open-toed slingback over
rudimentary concerns like mobility

and high-ankle sprains.

Watching a golf tournament is
unlike any other sports spectating
experience. Nowhere else is the line
between playing field and audience as
blurred.
The venue is roughly five square
miles, large portions of which fans are
permitted to roam freely.
You really will be able, if you hustle,
to stand within an arms length of
Michelle Wie while shes working.
This, by the way, leads to the answer
to the question: Why can you scream
at a basketball player on the foul line
but not a golfer over a shot?
For the same reason that, during
an NBA game, you cant stand on the

court. Think a little about the basic

nature and structure of the sport.
Think a little, in fact, is probably
the best general advice.
A lengthy and useful spectator guide is available now at
www.2015uswomensopen.com, and
will be available in print form at the
event.
It includes a comprehensive list of
prohibited items sorry, no ladders,
weapons, explosives or fireworks

but, sadly, no curmudgeonly dissent

from Supreme Court Justice Antonin
Scalia.

A quick primer

If youve never been before, it goes

like this: Pairing sheets are free and
readily available. Theyll tell you
whos playing when and include a map
of the course.
Thursday and Friday (before the
field is cut) half the field begins play
on the first hole and the other half on
the 10th. Theres a morning wave of
tee times and an afternoon wave.
Once you get a general sense of
where the players are, you can choose

Spectator : How to go about watching golf at LCC

Continued from 4

to follow a player or group,

hover around an area where
a lot of golf takes place (see
story on Page 7), set up camp
in the bleachers and watch
group after group come
through, or some combination of the above.
The weather will be a
huge everyday factor in the
experience. Pay attention
to the forecast, and utilize
sunscreen, hats, rainwear,
umbrellas and sunglasses as
appropriate.
Beyond those broad strokes,
I would suggest the following:
1. If youre more interested
in golf than celebrity, follow
rank-and-file players. Getting
close to the stars is too much
work.
An unusual thing about
the LPGA is that some great,

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Fans watch I.K. Kim putt on the ninth hole during the third round of the
2013 U.S. Womens Open at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

great players arent stars. You

might not know Hyo Joo Kim
from Lil Kim. Heres a hint:
One of them is ranked fourth
in the world, and watching

her hit balls is like watching

Ted Williams take BP.
2. Speaking of which, especially if youre a golfer and
even if youre not, spend some

time around the practice

area. You can see more shots
there than anywhere else,
and also see the pros interact
with each other (and their
caddies, teachers, hangers-on
and perhaps even fans) in a
more relaxed setting than the
course.
3. Skip the greens. People
tend to gather around greens,
but putting is the least interesting thing to watch. Doing
it, pros look pretty much like
everyone else.
Beat the crowd to the next
tee, and glean the putting results from the crowd reaction.
4. Pay attention to the marshals. You may run into one
or two cut from the cloth of
NBA referee Joey Crawford,
but in general theyre mildmannered volunteers, only
there to help.

5. Unless you want to carry

a shopping bag around all day,
hold off on buying merchandise until youre ready to head
home.
6. Unless youre asked, and
you wont be, dont share your
limitless knowledge of the
game with strangers.
7. Unless youre a dunce determined to be recognized as
such, dont yell Baba booey!
8. Dont yell at all, in fact.
Its not a tractor pull.
9. Finally, and we cant
stress this enough: Even if
you plan to mostly sit, theres
going to be more walking
than you think.
Comfortable shoes, people.

Going to LCC? Heres where to watch

MIKE GROSS
SPORTS COLUMNIST

As this is written, it is not

known where all the gallery
ropes will be, and what areas
of Lancaster Country Club
will be off-limits to spectators.
With that in mind, here are
some spots where youll be
able to see a variety of U.S.
Womens Open golf and golfers with minimal exertion:
Behind the first green: As
you face the green from the
back, the tee at 12 and green
at the eighth two terrific
par-3s are just behind and
to your left.

The ninth tee is directly to

your left. To your right are two
of the more interesting greens
on the course the 11th and
15th, both big-league par-4s.
Next to the 11th green is the
tee complex at 16, a shorter
par-4 with some strategic options. Also, this is a high point
of the property, with a panoramic view of the back nine.
Behind the 18th tee:
Another convergence, and another high, scenic viewpoint.
The green at 10, which
might be LCCs toughest, is
right there. So are the tees of
11, 14 and 18 all sweeping,
up-and-down par-4s and
the par-3 17th green.
The 1761 Club: This is
kind of a cheat, since access
comes only with a membership, which costs $225 for
the week, and memberships

LNP FILE PHOTO

Bleachers have been installed at Lancaster Country Clubs 18th green.

were 99 percent sold out as of

June 27.
The Club is a barn and adjoining temporary structure
with good views of tee shots
at the par-5 13th, the green
at the gorgeous par-3 12th
and the second shots at 16, an
interesting par-4.
Oh, and food, a bar, comfy
chairs, a wraparound porch

and air conditioning.

Across the Conestoga:
From the second green, down
a hill to a bridge over the
river, are the third through
sixth holes, bisected by the
Conestoga tributary Stauffer
Run. Its a sequence of shorter
holes that should yield birdies
and are very, very cool from a
design standpoint.

Behind the par-3 sixth, right

on the river, is a small tee for
the seventh, a shorter, potentially risk-reward par-5 with a
pond guarding the green.
This part of the course
might be hard (not impossible, lets hope) to get to, but
if youre into golf courses, itll
be worth the effort.
The 18th green: Among
golf spectators, there are
roamers and squatters.
This is a prime squatters
spot at any tournament.
Bleachers create a stadium
effect. Especially on Sunday,
youre more likely to see a
SportsCenter moment here
than anywhere else.

US WOMENS OPEN PREVIEW

LNP | LANCASTER, PA

CONESTOGA
n 399 yards, par 4

n 407 yards, par 4

HOLE 2

SIDE HILL

The course kicks off with a

long par four that requires
a tee ball placed in the
fairway to avoid the two
bunkers on both sides of
the landing area. From
there, a mid to long iron
will need to be placed on
a back-to-front sloping
green that will give a player
a good starting hole and
get her round underway
on the front nine, which
are collectively called
Dogwood.

n 374 yards, par 4

Side Hill is a short hole
that doglegs-left, with a
fairway that slopes from
right-to-left. Look for
players to avoid the left side
and place their tee balls on the
right, without running through
the fairway, to give themselves
a nice view into the wellbunkered green. With a wedge
or short club, theres potential
for many birdies on this hole.

HOLE 5
HOLE 4

DOUBLE
CREEK
n 346 yards, par 4
This is a shorter par
four that requires
a very conscious
tee ball placement.
Stauffer Run
meanders between
two landing areas and
plays as a lateral and
regular water hazard.
It has the potential
to cause many
headaches for the
players. A well placed
mid-iron or wedge
shot to a narrow,
elevated green that
slopes from back-tofront will be required
to make a par on this
challenging hole. And
the uphill putt is very
important on this
tricky green.

ROUND
THE BEND

Hole 3 gives the players

a first glimpse of the
Conestoga River. An
accurate drive from
a high cliff, over the
river, will meet an
extremely sloped fairway
that runs back toward
the river. Off the tee,
players must be careful
to avoid the trees to the
left and out of bounds
to the right. From the
fairway, a mid-iron
could set up a player
with a birdie putt, if she
can avoid the heavily
bunkered area short of
this green.

HO

HOLE 4

STRAIGHT
AWAY

HOLE 3

FOLD ALONG DASHED LINES 2

LE 5
3

n 392 yards, par 4

As its name implies,
Round the Bend is
a dogleg to the left. It
requires a tee ball to
be placed on the top of
a hill for the best view
of the green. A tee ball
too far to the right, and
players face out-ofbounds stakes. Too far to
the left and they could
find a grove of trees, or
be faced with a nasty
downhill lie into a green
fronted by Stauffer Run.
This is one of the two
greens on the front side
without bunkers and
is in need of a wellplayed short iron to the
correct side of a slight
camelback that runs
through the middle of
this back-to-fronttilting real estate.

6
HOLE 6

TIGHT CORNER

HO

n 172 yards, par 3

Its the second hole on the
front nine without a bunker,
a simple tee shot to a long
green that has water to the
left and behind the hole. This
tee shot was made easier
when an old Sycamore that
used to overhang the green
was removed several years
ago. With the tree gone,
players can shape their tee
shot any way that suits their
eye, landing on a mostly
flat green that tilts slightly
toward the water on the left.

LE

HO

HOLE 3

HOLE 3

HOLE 1

FOLD ALONG DASHED LINES 3

14

HO

LE

HOLE 7

MEADOW
n 482 yards, par 5
A long par five that has the
potential for bogeys and
double-bogeys, hole 7
features a split tee. An old
teeing area high above the
river was discovered several
years ago when the course
went through a restoration; a
new tee box was built close
to the river that requires
playing your tee ball over the
water. The tours long hitters
must decide if its worth
risking trying for this small
green in two shots.
A tee shot that flies too
far right could land in the
Conestoga River. A pond
juts out in front of the green
and runs along the right side
of the putting surface. And
there is no safe bail-out area
four bunkers that sit on a
hillside flank the left side of
the green. This will be a very
interesting hole on the front
nine to watch.

8
HOLE 8

PINEY KNOLL
n 198 yards, par 3
Piney Knoll, a long par
three, will require long
irons and utility woods to
hit onto a severely sloped
green that is guarded by
bunkers, one left and one
right. There is a bit of a
false front with a generous
chipping area short of this
kidney-shaped green. A
player who leaves herself
in position with an uphill
putt could avoid an easy
three-putt bogey.

FOLD ALONG DASHED LINES 3

JULY 5, 2015 15

US WOMENS OPEN PREVIEW

LANCASTER, PA | LNP

HOLE 9

FARAWAY
n 421 yards, par 4
This is a benign hole
guarded by one fairway
bunker on the right side
of the landing area and
and numerous trees in the
left rough. A slight, uphill
second shot to a green
that sits from right to left
should leave a player with
an easy two-putt par.

FOLD ALONG DASHED LINES 2

10

12

HOLE 10

BIG BEND
n 428 yards, par 4
This dogleg-right requires
a second shot played to an
uphill green, guarded by
bunkers on both the left
and the right. There is a
generous landing area on
this hole, and players must
play from the fairway when
trying to hit a fairway metal
to the green, which while
sloping uphill, sits mostly
flat. This is arguably the
second hardest par four to
hit in regulation.

HOLE 12

LITTLE DROP

HOLE 11

n 169 yards, par 3

DOGWOOD
n 416 yards, par 4
Called Dogwood, this
hole has a very generous
landing area but players
must avoid hitting too far to
the right, as their approach
shot to the green could be
blocked by trees. This hole
will test the players ability
to hit long irons or metal
woods into a green that is
very undulated.

11

This downhill par three

requires the proper club
to land a tee shot on the
narrow green. With a
spring running in front of
the green and five wellplaced bunkers left and
long, this is no easy drop
hole. It looks simple from
the elevated tee box, but
hitting a mid to long iron
on to this green is no
easy task.

JULY 5, 2015

US WOMENS OPEN PREVIEW

13

LNP | LANCASTER, PA

15

14

HOLE 13

HAPPY VALLEY
n 508 yards, par 5
This is a long, uphill, dogleg-left
par five; players are unlikely
to hit the green in two shots.
A driver played to the base of
the hill, just short of a bunker
guarding the right rough, will
leave them with mid irons and
fairway metals to a layup area
thats roughly 100 yards out. If a
player puts herself in the proper
position to use a short wedge
for the approach shot, a birdie
can be made on this green
thats flanked by a bunker on
each side.

HOLE 15

FOLD ALONG DASHED LINES 3

16

DEVILS ELBOW
n 414 yards, par 4

HOLE 14

THORN
HOLLOW

This is a long par four for tour

players. (It is a par five for
locals and is a great riskreward hole.) With a bunker
on the right begging to gobble
up tee shots and many trees
located within the elbow, this
is a fairway that isnt easy to
hold, especially for players
who employ a big, roping
draw. A fader of the golf ball
will have a much easier time
trying to position a ball for an
approach shot to this back-tofront sloping green. If they stay
below the hole, a birdie putt
could be made.

n 389 yards, par 4

The tee shot on hole 14
needs to avoid the three
fairway bunkers that protect
against a player cutting
too much off of the corner
to shorten her shot to the
green. Two well-placed
bunkers guard the small
green, which slopes from
back-to-front. If players place
shots to the green and leave
uphill putts, some birdies
could be made here.

FOLD ALONG DASHED LINES 2

16

18
17
HOLE 18

PEARLY GATES

HOLE 16

n 437 yards, par 4

SANDY HOOK
n 353 yards, par 4
Sandy Hook is polluted
with bunkers, both left and
right, and the hole narrows
severely where an ideal tee
shot would land in the short
grass. This is one of the few
holes that players may be
able to use something other
than a driver for their tee shot.
Depending on the length of
the hitters typical tee shot, a
five or three metal could be a
nice option, but players cant
lay back too far or risk being
blocked out of the left side of
this friendly green that tilts
slightly to the left. Look for
many birdie putts on this hole
and a lot of flying sand.

HOLE 17

CROSS WIND
n 178 yards, par 3
Cross Wind is a longish
par three. Shorter hitters
may employ mid to long
irons or metal woods
to place their tee shots
near the back-of-thegreen pin placement. The
green is somewhat flat
and protected by a larger
bunker left and a smaller
one to the right.

The course closes out with

a lengthy par four that
will be difficult for even
the longest hitters to hit
in two shots. The fairway
is flanked by one bunker
to the right and the green
approach is guarded by
two one to the left and
one to the right. Very few
players will find themselves
with a birdie putt from this
large putting surface.

A PAIR OF LCC INSIDERS DROP SOME KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HOW

THE VENUE MIGHT PLAY FOR ITS TURN IN THE SPOTLIGHT

COURSE NOTES

KEVIN FREEMAN

KFREEMAN@LNPNEWS.COM

The United States Golf Association is famous infamous? for tricking up a golf
course when its time to host
one of its tournaments, most
notably a U.S. Open.
Yes, the rough is allowed
to grow to a club-grabbing
length, but thats nearly the
norm now.
In the past, the USGA has
used other methods to make
courses an extreme test of
the game. For example, at the
2012 mens U.S. Open at the
Olympic Club in San Francis-

co, golfer Stephen Ames said

the USGA watered the greens
on the front nine, but not on
the back nine, making them
harder to hold.
What the USGA might be
thinking in regards to the U.S.
Womens Open at Lancaster
Country Club next week is
unknown.
But a conversation with Alli
Weaver, who works at LCC
and plays the course frequently, and Rory Connaughton, a
member of the executive committee that was instrumental
in bringing the tournament
to LCC, could lead people to

think the USGA might not

have to resort to any tricks.
Thats because the course
will be a challenge in and of
itself.
While several of the 156
players in the field have
dropped in to play LCC in
advance of the U.S. Open, the
course can play differently
every day. Those practice
rounds may have provided
some insight, but those lessons learned could be out the
window starting Thursday.
That could induce some
nightmares for players, but
COURSE NOTES, page 20

LNP FILE PHOTO

The third green at Lancaster Country Club is seen from the tee box. Rory
Connaughton, who was instrumental in bringing the U.S. Womens Open
to the course, said every hole at LCC has a line of charm meaning
that theres a line that can be drawn from the tee that puts a player in
the best position to approach a green.

Course Notes: A look at how LCC may play for Open

Continued from 18

fun for fans.

Connaughton knows not only the
history of the course, but also every
nook and cranny. He believes every
question that could be asked by a golfer is asked on LCCs layout.

LCC
Typically, its death by 1,000 cuts.
(Connaughton)
Connaughton said every hole has
whats called a line of charm, meaning
there is a line that can be drawn from
the tee that puts a player in the best
position to approach a green.
Finding that line, that angle, is the
difficult part when you mix in wind
and slopes.
Every one of these greens is characterized by some fairly severe intercepting slopes, Connaughton
said. Thats consistent with William

Flynns architecture on every course

he did. If youre above the flagstick
on these greens, typically, when the
greens are at pace, you can putt off
the green very easily. Or you can have
a six-foot putt that moves three feet.
It was Flynn who set up the course
in 1919 then modified it to take four of
the holes over the Conestoga River in
the 1940s. Flynn also designed Shinnecock Hills on Long Island and was
an advisor in the shaping of Pine Valley in New Jersey and Merion in Ardmore.
The slopes on the course are not
limited to the greens. Flynns design
also has golfers making second and
third shots when the ball is above or
below their feet. So, on some holes,
the emphasis is on distance, calling
for the use of long irons, or on placement.
I think your second shot on par4 holes is going to be very important, Weaver said. Because there

are greens out here if you miss by

a little youre going to have a tough
putt, so the second shot is very important.

No. 12
Long is dead and short is in the water.
(Connaughton)
Weaver said many of LCCs holes
play differently each time through.
Normally, its wind that changes them.
Take No. 12, for example. Its the shortest hole on the course, but the par 3
also has the shallowest green and has
trouble in front and in back.
Its a beautiful hole but as far as hitting a golf shot, its not the most appealing to your eye, she said. It has
bunkers behind it and it has a false
front. If you have any spin on your ball
and you do not hit it high enough, it
can roll back into the water (in front of
the green).

The wind swirls there, Connaughton said. The green sits in a little
bowl. From one tee shot to the next in
the same group, the player may experience wind from behind or in her face or
coming from the left. What that does is
what William Flynn really wanted to
do: to cast doubt in the golfers mind.
Connaughton said that in the last
two elite amateur tournaments played
at LCC, No. 12 played the most difficult
against par.

Potential for opportunity

Flynn was not completely maniacal

when designing LCC. There are birdie
opportunities there.
Weaver listed Nos. 13 and 16 as
chances to make birdies. A good second shot on 13 gives the players 100

Course Notes: At LCC

Continued from 20

LNP FILE PHOTO

The sand may come into play on the 16th hole at Lancaster Country Club. However, Alli
Weaver, who works at LCC and plays the course frequently, is quick to note that the hole is
one that offers golfers a good chance at making birdie.

yards or less to the green. No. 16 is a

shorter par 4.
I could see some girls hitting a
driver and going for it on 16, she
said. Or, at least get close enough
that theyll have a short chip.
Some golfers will start their
rounds with a birdie attempt on No.
1, provided they keep their tee shot
in the fairway.
I think the first six holes present your best birdie opportunities,
Connaughton said.
And I totally concur with Alli on
13 and 16. On 16, a golfer can hit
4-iron to 5-iron to driver. Every option is available, depending on what
youre looking to achieve on your
second shot.
Can you imagine having two players tied for the Open lead as they
step to the 18th tee on Sunday?
A finishing hole providing a great
finish.
Playing 18 anytime could be dra-

matic, no matter what day of the

tournament.
You stand on the tee and thoughts
probably go right to your impending
second shot.
But dont forget about that tee
shot.
Honestly, you just want to get it
in the fairway, Weaver said. One
of the biggest obstacles on 18 is that
you cant go right. The rough is thick
and theres a bunker that comes into
play. If you can get yourself a good
shot and are in the fairway, its a
lot more appealing to the eye to go
for the green. Its a long hole and
will take whatever you have to get
there.
LCC. Lots to consider before you
grip it and rip it.
Somewhere, Mr. Flynn is smiling.
Just like the fans wholl come out to
watch the U.S. Womens Open.
The players? There will be at least
one smiling late Sunday evening on
July 12.
