MANAGER

CHIEF MECHANIC

JOB SPECIFICATION
Directs and coordinates activities concerned with
acquisition of automotive equipment and operation and
maintenance of automotive fleet repair and storage facilities
by performing the following duties personally or through
subordinate supervisors.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Coordinates activities of personnel conducting research
and testing program on automotive equipment considered
for acquisition based on such factors as operational
performance, costs of operation and maintenance,
operational safety, and compliance with environmental
laws and regulations.
Reviews and submits staff proposals for modifications to
vendor or manufacturer.
Directs procurement of all types of company owned and
operated automotive equipment and materials, supplies,
and parts required to maintain automotive equipment,
garages, and storage facilities.
Coordinates automotive repair and maintenance services
to obtain maximum utilization of automotive equipment
and prevent operational delays in other departments.

Repair, replace, or adjust defective fuel injectors,
carburetor parts, and gasoline filters.
Repair or replace automobile leaf springs.
Troubleshoot fuel, ignition, and emissions control
systems, using electronic testing equipment.

AUTOELECTRICAL

Automotive electricians install, maintain, identify faults and


repair electrical wiring and computer-based equipment in
motor vehicles and related equipment, such as caravans,
trailers, earthmoving equipment, mining equipment, marine
applications and agricultural equipment.

Install or repair air conditioners and service components,


such as compressors, condensers, and controls.
Replace defective mufflers and tailpipes.
Rebuild, repair, or test automotive fuel injection units.
Install, adjust, or repair hydraulic or electromagnetic
automatic lift mechanisms used to raise and lower
automobile windows, seats, and tops.
Align wheels, axles, frames, torsion bars, and steering
mechanisms of automobiles, using special alignment
equipment and wheel-balancing machines.
Repair or rebuild clutch systems.
Change spark plugs, fuel filters, air filters, and batteries in
hybrid electric vehicles.
Diagnose and replace or repair engine management
systems or related sensors for flexible fuel vehicles
(FFVs) with ignition timing, fuel rate, alcohol
concentration, or air-to-fuel ratio malfunctions.
Replace hydraulically assisted systems with electricpowered systems, such as power steering pumps or air
conditioning compressors, to improve fuel economy.
Diagnose and repair regenerative braking systems or
hydraulic systems in hybrid vehicles.
Service internal combustion engine systems for hybrid
electric vehicles.
Service or repair butane gas, ethanol, methane, or other
alternative or biofuel systems.
Conduct visual inspections of compressed natural gas fuel
systems to identify cracks, gouges, abrasions,
discoloration, broken fibers, loose brackets, damaged
gaskets, or other problems.
Service biodiesel fuel tanks for algae or sludge
accumulation by cleaning, changing filters, or adding
algaecides.

Complies with state vehicle requirements by testing
engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and
painting.
Maintains vehicle records by recording service and
repairs.
Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating

instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining


supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for
repairs.
