Using the

ISOTHERM
MARK II

W. L. Walker Co., Inc.

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Operating the ISOTHERM, MK II

Brief Description
The ISOTHERM is a hand-held portable digital thermometer designed specifically for use in
hazardous locations. The ISOTHERM has a 4-key control pad that is used to select the desired
functions. The 4-digit LCD display is large and easy to read.
Turning the ISOTHERM on
To turn on the ISOTHERM, press the POWER button. The display will show:

to demonstrate that all of the display segments are still working.

Turning on the Backlight
In cases where the lighting is not adequate for reading the display, you will want to activate the
backlight. Follow these steps to turn the backlight on:
1)
Make sure the unit is OFF
2)
Press and HOLD the POWER button for 2 to 3 seconds (or until the 8.8:8.8
display disappears)
ISOTHERM MARK II Instructions
The ISOTHERM MARK II can read and store a single temperature point. It also features a digital
calibration tool which allows precision calibration without "tweeking pots" or doing clumsy
calibration calculations.

Power-On Information Display

When the MARK II first powers up, it shows the following sequence of screens:

or, in the case of a Celsius version:

The first screen (8.8:8.8), as noted before, is used to test to make sure all of the display's
segments are working. The second display (F and C) tells you what system of temperature that
the thermometer is using. The third display (75.3 and 24.1) is the current temperature. The
numbers depicted above for the current temperature display are just typical for room temperature
measurements and are not really expected to show up on any given MARK II device when you
turn it on. The current temperature display will be the display that is shown if no buttons are
pressed after the power-on sequence.
WARNING: The removable "cage" at the tip of the Probe should always be in place when
the ISOTHERM is in the field to prevent costly Probe tip damage.Viewing the Battery Gauge
If you wish to see the gauge depicting the fuel left in your battery, simply PRESS AND HOLD the
LIFE button and you will see:

with the empty part of the battery blinking. If the entire display is blinking, then your battery is
almost empty, and will need to be replaced. If your battery is about half empty, then you will see
the following two displays blink back and forth:

Taking a temperature reading

Take the stainless steel probe and place it in the fluid to be measured. After the probe has been
in the fluid for approximately 30 to 45 seconds, turn on the MARK II and read the current
temperature. For the greatest accuracy, leave the probe in the fluid for five minutes or more. To
Save the Current Temperature, press the SAVE key. The screen will flash:

And the value will be stored. To Recall the Saved Temperature, press the RECALL key and the
display will show the saved temperature.
Replacing the battery
To replace the battery you will need to remove the two hex screws that are at the bottom of the
ISOTHERM (opposite end from the handle). Once you have the two screws out of the bottom, the
bottom end-cap should remove. The bottom end-cap has a 9V battery holder attached to it and
there is a 9V connector with a six-inch lead that attaches to the battery.
1)
Remove the battery from the holder
2)
Remove the battery connector from the battery
3)
Connect the new battery to the connector (be sure to use only the approved
batteries that are listed at the bottom of the ISOTHERM's label)
4)
Put the battery back into the holder on the end-plate
5)
Put the end-plate on the bottom of the ISOTHERM
6)
Replace the 2 hex screws (you MUST replace them both)
Replacing the cable
The probe and cable assembly on the ISOTHERM MARK II is designed to be replaced with
minimal effort. Follow these easy steps:
1)
Obtain a good replacement cable (new or rebuilt from W.L. Walker Co., Inc.)
2)
Unwrap the old cable from the ISOTHERM
3)
Remove one of the two large hex-screws holding the cable-wrap bar to the
ISOTHERM, loosen the other, and rotate the cable-wrap bar so that the white
cable-to-box connection is easily reached
4)
Unscrew the cable connector (it has left-handed threads so you will need to
rotate it right to loosen it) and pull it until it's about one foot back on the cable
5)
Pull on the cable, working it back and forth gently, until the cable disconnects
from the box
6)
Take the replacement cable and pull the white plastic pieces about a foot back
from the end of the cable
7)
Take the black connector and gently insert it into the box where the other cable
had been connected. You will need to rotate the black connector until it goes in
easily, because it is keyed to insert correctly. The black connector should insert
until it's top is flush with the top of the box connection.

8)

9)
10)
11)

Test the connection by turning the unit on. If the unit displays the current
temperature correctly then you are finished installing the cable. Otherwise, return
to step 5 and try again. (The most likely problem here is that you bent one of the
pins inside the box by pushing on the black connector before it was properly
aligned).
Now, push all of the white plastic parts down the cable until you can screw the top
white piece into the box (twist it left to tighten it)
Replace the cable-wrap bar and it's large hex screws
Wind the new cable onto the ISOTHERM
