ABSTRACT
To enhance controllability and increase power transfer capability use of power electronics based
Flexible AC Transmission system (FACTS) devices are extensive in present context. This project
aims to identify the improved Power Transmission Capability control scheme for
INPS(Integrated Nepal Power System) by comparative analysis of FACTS devices on the basis
of theory& computer simulation.
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1BACKGROUND
The rapid growth in Electrical Energy usehas gradually led to the development of generation
sites remotely loacted from the load center. The generation of bulk power at remote locations
necessitates the use of transmission lines to connect generation sites to load centers with multiple
line sources leading to evolution of complex interconnected electrical transmission networks. The
demand of energy is increasing day by day but supply is constarained due to various factors so
the optimum utilization of available resources is a vaiable option. so the concept of enhancement
of transmission line capability by maintainig reactive and active power flow come up to
existence. The need of supply to the further demand due to incresed loads, improving reliability
and delivery of energy at lowest cost with improved quality has been a matter of big concern for
utilities &application of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) technologies may be a best
approach to solve these problem.[1]
FACTS is power electronic based system that provide control of one or more AC transmission
system parameters to enhance controllability and increase power transfer capability, hence so
called to provide flexlibilty to transmission.Implementaion of FACTS technology also improves
voltage
control,transient
stability,damping
power
oscillations,
reactive
power
compensation, power flow control etc. Due to the rapid enhancements on FACTS technology,
modelling of FACTS devices, its comparison, study of its characterstics with suitable economic
analysis and impacts of implementaion on system performance are trending field of study and
research.[1,3]
The present Nepalese Energy scenario is worse as the demand-supply gap is extremelywide due
to various parameters which has hinderedthe development & execution of power projects and
evacuation of power generated is constrained due to bottleneck transmission system. So the need
for new high capacity transmission line has been a major concern of governing Authorities.
NEA(Nepalese Electricity Authority) has initiated many transmission line projects which are on
pipelining yet they are not supposed to be sufficient enough for mitigation of problem.
Expansion of transmission lines is as equally difficult and time-consuming as that of generation.
So the requirement of efficent transmission lines may be part of solving the present energy surge
situation of the nation [11].In this situation this project Enhancement of Power Transfer
Integrated Nepal Power System using FACTS Devices posseses research & study on
transmission capabilty enhancment and implementation of the FACTS devices to improve the
power transfer through existing transmission lines.
1.2INTRODUCTION
The operation of the ac power transmission line is generally constrained by the limitations of one
or more network parameters (such as line impedence) and operating variables(such as voltage
and currents). As a result, the power line is unable to direct power flow among generating
stations.Flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) is a new emerging technology and its
principal role is to enchance contrallability and power transfer capability in ac systems..FACTS
is an actransmission systems incorporating the power electronic-based technology whichuses
switching power electronics to control power flow in the range of few tens to a few hundreds of
megawatts.[6]
FACTS controllers are capable of controlling the interrelated line parameters and other
operating variables that govern the operation of transmission system including series
impedence, shunt impedence, current, voltage, phase angle, and damping of the oscillations at
various frequwncies below the rated frequency.By providing added flexibility, FACTS
controllers can enable a transmission line to carry power closer to its thermal rating.[6]
There are some of the limitation of the transmission line :
Therefore FACTS devices can enchance the power carrying capacity of lines upto the thermal
limit. The transient stability limit is enchanced and also the voltage fluctuations can be overcome
by these controlling devices.[2,3,4,5]
1.3 OBJECTIVE
Loadflow anslysisof INPS to identify the suitable position for the implementation of
FACTS.
To Compareand model a best selected FACTS device with other experimented devices in
the simulation.
To improve the power transfer capability of Integrated Nepalese Power System(INPS)
using suitable FACTS Technology.
1.4 LIMITATION
1.5 MOTIVATION
Emerging advancements in use of Power Electronics for enhancement of power system
quality, reliabilty& stablity and control has become the field so this field of study has been
choosen as final year project. The congestion in nepalese grid due to limited transmission
capability, this project ought to seek a identifiction of viable option of use of FACTS
CHAPTER 2 METHODOLOGY
The methods for proper functioning of projcts are enlisted below:
2.2IMPLEMENTATION PROCEDURE
2.3PROPOSED TIMELINE
The whole project is divided into two sections
During the first section i.e this semester (Aug-Jan), we set up our goal to complete detailed study
on the parameters of INPS data and simulation of INPS with complete load flow analysis.
In the second section i.e final semester (feb-july), implementation of FACTS controllers and their
comparision based upon the output will be carried out. Finally the completion of remaning
simulation &detailed analysis, documentaion & validation of obtained result will be completed.

CONCLUSION
This project would be a landmark in case of enhancing present transmission capability scenario
of Nepal. Our study and research on Transmission capability Enhancement using FACTS may be
a reference to governing authority to make decision on FACTS implementation. And as
wholesome we will be able to put some aid on improving power transmission of Nepal.
