avoid disappointment - book your Inca Trail holiday in time

Over the last few years, the Peruvian government has imposed
increasing restrictions on tourism on the Inca Trail in order to
protect it from overuse. The aim is to minimize ecological impact
and erosion, mainly by having limited access and improving the
quality of the operators. There are now only a very limited number
of trekking permits available - 500 per day (around 200 for
travellers and the rest for staff) - and they are being issued on a
first-come-first-served basis. In order to avoid disappointment we
recommend booking well in advance (up to a minimum of 3
months in peak season), unless you are extremely flexible over
your travel dates.
Reservations are not held on the Trail and all permits to trek must
be bought as far as possible in advance with complete and
correct passport information, to which no modifications can be
made. Any attempts at modifications result in a loss of the permit
and any money paid.

INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU 4 DAYS AND 3 NIGHTS

The Inca trail system - inca trail to machu picchu - inca trail.
Inca trail was constructed in pre-Columbian South America, the Inca trail system, or Qhapaq Ñan.
was the most extensive. The network was based on two north-south inca trail roads. The eastern
route ran high in Puna and mountain valleys from Quito, Ecuador to Mendoza, Argentina. The
western inca trail route followed the coastal plain except in coastal deserts where it hugged the
foothills. More than twenty inca trail routes ran over the western mountains, while others traversed
the eastern cordillera in the montana and lowlands. Some of these inca trail roads reach heights of
over 5,000 m ( 16,500 ft ) above sea level. The trails connected the regions of the Inca empire from
the northern provincial capital in Quito, Ecuador past the modern city of Santiago, Chile in the
south. The Inca trail system linked together about 40,000 km of roadway and provided access to
over three million km² of territory.the inca trail roads provided routes for rapid communication,
personnel movement, and logistical support. The prime users were soldiers, porters and llama
caravans, along with the nobility and individuals on official duty. Permission was required before
others could walk along the roads, and tolls were charged at some bridges.Althought the Inca trail
roads varied greatly in scale, construction and appearance, for the most part they varied between
about one and four meters in width.
Because the Incas did not make use of the wheel for transportation, and did not have horses until
the arrival of the Spanish in Peru in the 16th century, the trails were used almost exclusively by
people walking, sometimes accompanied by pack animals, usually the llama.
Relay messengers, or chasqui, stationed at intervals of 6 to 9 km , carried both messaegs and
objects such as fresh marine fish for the rulers in the sierra. Messages consisted of knotted-cord
records known as quipu along with a spoken message. Chaskis could cover an estimated 240 km
per day.
There were approximately 2,000 inns, or tambos, placed at even intervals along the inca trails. The
inns provided food, shelter and military supplies to the tens of thousands who traveled the inca trail
roads. There were corrals for llamas and stored provisions such as corn, lima beans, dried
potatoes, and llama jerky. Along the inca trail roads, local villagers would plant fruit trees that were
watered by irrigation ditches. This enabled chasqui runners and other travelers to be refreshed
while on their journeys. Inca rope bridges provided access across valleys.

The most important Inca trail road was the Camino inca, as it is known in Spanish, with a length of
5,200 km ( 3,230 mi ). It began in Quito, Ecuador, passed through Cusco, and ended in what is now
Tucumán, Argentina. The Camino Real traversed the mountain ranges of the Andes, with peak
altitudes of more than 5,000 m . El Camino de la Costa , the coastal inca trail, with a length of 4,000
km ( 2,420 mi ), ran parallel to the sea and was linked with the Camino Real by many smaller
routes.
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is actually three routes, which all meet up near Inti-Pata, the 'Sun
Gate' and entrance to Machu Picchu. The three trails are known as the Mollepata, Classic and One
Day trails, with Mollepata being the longest of the three. Located in the Andes mountain range, the
Trail passes through several types of Andean environments including cloud forest and alpine
tundra. Settlements, tunnels, and many Incan ruins are located along the trail before ending the
terminus at the Sun Gate on Machu Picchu mountain. The two longer routes require an ascent to
beyond 12,000 ft ( 3,660 m ) above sea level, which can result in altitude sickness.
Concern about overuse leading to erosion has led the Peruvian government to place a limit on the
number of people who may hike this trail per season, and to sharply limit the companies that can
provide guides. As a result, advance booking is mandatory. A maximum of 500 people, including
guides and porters, are permitted to begin the trail every day. As a result, the high season books
out very quickly.

SALKANTAY TREK / ALTERNATIVE INCA TRAIL TO MACHUPICCHU (5D / 4N)

This salkantay trek Was Recently Named among the 25 best Treks in the World, by National
Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine.
A remote and ancient footpath in the same region of the Inca trail, but less traveled and offering
more spectacular views. This route provides a magnificent wilderness alternative for those who wish
to escape the more congested trekking routes.
On the trail, we pass through an amazing progression of ecological zones, from sparsely vegetated
alpine meadows flanking two spectacular 20,000' glaciered peaks, down through subtropical forest
into the Inca salkantay Trail. We arrive later to the "Lost City of the Incas¨, Machu Picchu.

This lovely and varied salkantay trek hike (about 50km) is the "soft option" from Soray since the
pass is lower (though still a tough 4,750m (15,580ft) and then is mostly downhill through forested
valleys, above deep ravines, ending at 1,500m.

The trek on the second day from Soray goes steeply uphill for half an hour, then comes to a series
of zigzags (Siete Culebras is the local name of this stretch). At the top of the seventh switchback
the terrain levels out under Salkantay lateral moraine, and drops gently down to the small laguna
Soirococha. The pass you see above is, alas, a false one; the main pass is a little further on, but the
view of Salkantay looming above you more than compensates for the effort. The real pass at
4,750m is reached after 3-4 hours from the moraine, and is marked by a pile of stones , "well know
as Apacheta by the locals", which grows daily as each traveler adds his pebble to thank the APUS
for a safe trip.

Then the salkantay trek trail descends to the left -hand side of the valley, becoming indistinct in
swampy areas. And then comes a place named Huayrajmachay "eye of the wind", from here we will
have a great chance to see the beautiful Pyramid-shape of Humantay behind as you drop below the
tree line, know as LA CEJA DE SELVA ("Eyebrow of the Jungle"), and walk through groves of
bamboo with many orchids and other flowers and lots of hummingbirds, spectacular waterfalls, a
small hot spring at Collpapampa the right place to lock out for the parakeets that abound in this area
as well. And then we go to take a local bus in order to get Santa Teresa where we will enjoy the hot
springs which is 45 minutes from this town .and then will see Machu picchu and wayna pichu
mountains and then the last day will see finally the Incan city of Machu picchu.

FIRST SALKANTAY TREK DAY : MOLLEPATA TREK - SORAYPAMPA

We pick you up from your hotel at 4:30 a.m .and then we drive for about 3 hours to Mollepata to
start our salkantay trek . As soon as we are at mollepata while you have breakfast the cook and the
horseman will pack all the camping equipment and cooking stuff and we start the salkantay hike the
first 3 hours will be a little bit uphill to get Cruzpata where we will have lunch with panoramic views
of beautiful snow-capped mountains (Humantay; 4120m/13500ft and Salkantay; 6271m/20575ft) -
just the start! We will begin our salkantay trek towards Soraypampa, our first campsite (3800
m/11750ft; the highest and coldest campsite of the trip) we will be very close to the second highest
snow capped -mountain of Salkantay.

SECOND SALKANTAY TREK DAY: SORAYPAMPA -CHAULLAY OR COLLPAPAMPA

(MIGHTY SALCANTAY)
After having salkantay breakfast we start walking about 5:30 am ,because this day will be the
longest day the first 4 hours is uphill to get highest point of the trail (4650m/15200ft) located halfway
between 2 huge mountains; Salkantay on the right and Tucarhuay on the left. From the pass, the
views of the 2 snow-capped mountains are incredible. There is a possibility of snow here.
After a rest, we will continue our salkantay trek walk (downhill) through a dramatic cloud forest
towards Huayracpunku, where we will have lunch. We hike on the salkantay trek again after lunch
in the direction of the start of the jungle until we reach our second campsite, chaullay or
Colcapampa (3000m/9800ft).

THIRD SALKANTAY TREK DAY: CHAULLAY -LA PLAYA -SANTA TERESA (CLOUD FOREST)
After breakfast, at 6.30am, we start trekking salkantay through the upper jungle crossing the
Lluskamayo River and a variety of little brooks to reach La Playa walking about 6 hours. Today we
will pass through valleys and have wonderful views of waterfalls, tropical fruits ,plants and as soon
as we are at la playa place horses will go back to Mollepata on the salkantay trek so we take a local
bus to drive one hour to get Santa Teresa where will camp (1500m/4905ft) with a warm climate.
After a rest, we will go to the hot springs and enjoy the well-deserved soothing water!

FOURTH SALKANTAY TREK DAY: SANTA TERESA – HYDROELECTRIC TRAIN STATION

-AGUAS CALIENTES
We will have breakfast at 8am and leave our campsite Santa Theresa. We will cross the Santa
Teresa Bridge and follow the upward route of the river. We continue walking, passing a variety of
crop plantations, coca, banana typical of salkantay trek etc. until we reach the hydroelectric station.
And after the lunch we keep going walking about two and half hours along the train road till reaching
Aguas Calientes town where we will spend the night in a hostel.
In Aguas Calientes, you can take advantage of the thermal springs in the town (entrance 10 soles)
a real treat after finishing the trek

FIFTH SALKANTAY TREK DAY: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU!!!

We wake up early morning about 4 am to then to 4:30 to have the breakfast and leave to walk up
the last portion o the salkantay trek to Machupicchu which takes one and half hours up to
machupicchu but there is another option to catch the first bus which leaves 5:30 to Machupicchu
(25-minutes long) in order to appreciate the magnificent city as the sun is rising.
A walking tour (approximately 2 hours) is given by your Guide and after this you can explore the
mysterious city by yourselves. If you still have energy you can also climb Huaynapicchu
(2720m/8890ft)!!! It takes 45 minutes to reach the top.
You will meet your guide in Aguas Calientes (it can be reached by bus or on foot) to be given your
train tickets back to Cusco or Ollantaytambo where someone will be waiting for you with your
guide's name who will take you to take a bus to Cusco.
