    MahatmaGandhi(18691948)andKasturbaGandhi(18691944)werethefirstIndianpowercoupletobedepictedonapostalstampafter
    independence.Itwasissuedin1969tocommemorateGandhiscentenary.Thestampcarriesavalueof20paise.Gandhialwayscreditshis
    wifeKasturbawithteachinghimahimsa.Shewashispillarofsupport.Sheplungedintothefreedommovementandactivelytookpartinfasts
    andmarchesledbyMahatmaGandhi.ShediedonFebruary22,1944,saysN.Hariharan,aretiredpostmaster.Hedisplayswithpridehis
    collectionofexclusiveGandhistamps,firstdaycoversandpostalcardsandsays,Priortoindependence,stampswereissuedonlyonroyal
    couples.GandhiandKasturbaarethefirstIndiancoupleonapostalstampafterIndependence.HariharanisthefirstrecipientofMeghdoot
    AwardoftheDepartmentofPostsinstitutedin1984,andawinnerofsixawardsforhissuggestionstothepostaldepartment.Inoneofthe
    postcardsreleasedonOctober2,1952,Gandhiisseenwithhiswife.OtherpostcardsfeatureportraitsofGandhiwithakid,hischarkha

    Pickingoutastampfromthecollection,Hariharannarratesthestorybehindit.ItsaoneandahalfannastampissuedonGandhis80th
    birthday.Itispartofasetoffourstampsinthedenominationsofoneandahalfannas,threeandahalfannas,12annasand10rupeesthat
    werereleased.ItwasJawaharlalNehruwhosuggestedthewordBapubeincludedinHindiandUrduonthestamps,hesays.Thereare
    alsostampscommemoratinghisfastforcommunalunityin1924,theDandiMarchof1930andthesaltSatyagraha.Hariharanshowsyoua
    setoffourcommemorativestamps,releasedonthecentenaryofSatyagraha(October2,2007).Hariharansaysthefirstcountryotherthan
    IndiatohonourMahatmaGandhionitsstampswastheU.S.TheU.S.releasedstampswithvaluesoffourcentsandeightcents.Morethan
    80othercountriesfollowedsuit.TheIndianPostalDepartmenthasissuedstampsontheleaderat35significantoccasionssofar,he
    mentions.However,theBritishversionoftheGandhistampisbelievedtobethemostoutstandingexampleonphilatelicartandprinting.It
    bearsGandhischaracteristicsmilingposeagainstthebackgroundoftheIndiantricolour.
    ThehistoricDandiMarchalsofeaturesonasetoftwostamps,issuedbytheIndianpostsandTelegraphsDepartment.Gandhiwalkedthe
    distanceof385kilometresfromAhmedabadanddefiedthesaltlawbypickingupafistfulofsaltatDandi,aseasidevillageinGujarat.
    HariharanalsotreasuresthefirstdaypostalcoveronMahatmaGandhi,releasedonAugust15,1948.ItsareminderofGandhis
    contributionstothefreedomstruggleandkeepshismemoriesalive,hesmiles.
