1.2CourseIntroduction
Youareembarkingonyouruniversitystudiestobecomeaprofessionalengineer.Itishighlylikelyyouwillplayanimportant
role in addressing the key challenges for the 21st century such as the provision of water resources, infrastructure and
communication, food supplies and health services and the development of a new sustainable energy economy. In your first
year, much of your time will be spent on the mathematical and scientific basics that underpin all engineering disciplines.
However, being a professional engineer is much more than the technical application of these sciences. Engineers must also
appreciatethecontextandimpactofengineeringactivitiesontheworldaroundus.EngineersAustralia(Australia'sprofessional
engineeringbody)definestheattributesneededbyagraduateprofessionalengineerasfollows:

1.1.Comprehensive,theorybasedunderstandingoftheunderpinningnaturalandphysicalsciencesandtheengineering

Thiscoursebeginstoaddressalloftheseattributesandencouragesyoufromday1ofyourstudiestothinklikeaprofessional
engineer. ENGG1100 is built largely around team projects in which sustainability in design and development is central. In the
projectyouwillmeetasateamofapproximatelysixstudentseachweekundertheguidanceofengineeringstaffandtutorsto
tackle a multidiscipline designprototypebuild project. The semester will conclude with 'Demo Day' where your team will be
givenachancetoputyourprototypetothetestinacompetitiveenvironment.
ENGG1100isdesignedtowelcomeyoutothecommunityofengineeringpractice,giveyoutoolsandskillstouseinyourdegree
programandinindustry,andtostimulateyourthinkingaboutprofessionalissuesthatyouwillfaceasagraduateengineer.

ENGG1100hasbeendesignedsothatyouexperiencewhatitistobeanengineeryouwillnotbeanengineeringstudentbuta
studentengineer.Thereforethecourseisverydifferenttootherfirstyearcourses:thereisnoexam,50%ofyourmarkscome
fromteamsubmissions,youwilltakeadesignfromconcepttoprototypeusingengineeringprocesses,andyouwillproject
manage,get'yourhandsdirty',writereports,andgiveoralpresentations.

5.3LateSubmission
General: Assessment items must be submitted by the due date. Most students are able to plan their time and prioritise their
workload to meet imposed deadlines. Students who meet deadlines can expect to have the value of their efforts protected
andwewillensurethatothersdonothavethebenefitofextratimeinwhichtocompletework.
Exceptional circumstances: If you are prevented from submitting a piece of assessment in time due to exceptional
circumstances,thenyoumustconsultwiththecoursecoordinator(A/ProfLydiaKavanagh)orwithyourprojectleadertoobtain
signedapprovalforlatesubmission.Weareusuallyveryflexibleifyouapproachuswellbeforethesubmissionisdue.Wetend
to be less flexible if you approach us the day the submission is due or after the time for submission has passed. The signed
approvalmustbeattachedtolatesubmissionswhentheyarelodged.
Medicalreasons:Ifyouarepreventedfromsubmittingapieceofassessmentintimeduetomedicalreasons,thenyoumust
obtainaDoctor'scertificatetosubstantiateyourclaim.Universitypolicyisclearonthispractice:themedicalcertificatemustbe

Penalty: The penalty for late submission without acceptable reason is 10% per day or part thereof (including Saturday and
