Let'ssayyouhaveataskthatwilltakeyou10to12hourstocomplete.Here'show
todoitinjustoneday.
1.Telleveryoneyouwon'tbeavailable.
Interruptionsareproductivitykillers,solettingpeopleknowyou'redoingsomething
specialandwillbeoutofreachforadayisanabsolutemust.
Ataminimum,tellcoworkersandfamily,butdon'tforgetimportantclients.Senda
quickemailadayortwobeforeexplainingthatyouwillbetieduponacertain
dayandwillrespondtocalls,emails,etc.firstthingthefollowingmorning.
SomecustomerswillcontactyoubeforeThursdayotherswillmentallynotethat
youcan'tbereached.Eitherwayit'sallgood.
Andyougetanadditionalbenefitfromtellingotherpeopleyourplan:Those
importanttoyouwillknowwhatyouintendtoaccomplish,andtheywillknowifyou
don'tsucceed.

lunchdraggedandthelastcoupleofhourseachdayalwaysseemedlikedeath.But
whenweworked12hourshifts,themorninghoursseemedtoflyby.Something
aboutknowingyou'llbeworkingforalongtimeallowsyoutostopcheckingthe
clockit'sasifyounaturallyfindyourZen(work)place.
Whenyouknowyou'reinforalonghaul,yourmindautomaticallyadapts.Trustme
itworks.
3....Andtotallycommittomeetingthatdeadline.
Youknowwhathappens:Onceyoudecideataskshouldtakefourhoursit
somehowendsuptakingfourhours,evenwhenitshouldactuallytakeonlytwo.It's
naturaltofillextratimewith"stuff."

tostripoutthenonessentialandgetthingsdonemuchquickerthanwecouldhave
imagined.

Haveyouevertakenalongcartripandleftat3or4a.m.?Ibetthosefirstfew
hoursflewby,becauseyousteppedoutsideyournorm.
Thesametrickworksforanextremeproductivityday.Startat4a.m.Orindulge
yourinnernightowlandstartat6p.m.andworkthroughthenight.Thosefirstfew
hourswillflyby.

Anextremeproductivitydayisnotanormalday.Setthestagefortheunusualby
breakingfreeofyourusualroutine.
5.Delayandthenspaceoutyourrewards.
Sayyouliketolistentomusicwhenyouwork.Onanextremeproductivityday,
keepthemusicoffforthefirstfewhours.Thatway,whenyourmotivationstartsto
flag,alittlemusicwillprovideagreatboosttoyourmorale.
Howeveryoutendtotreatyourself,thinkofthosetreatsaspersonalproductivity
bulletsuseallyourammunitiontooearlyandyou'llhavenothingleftwhenyou
reallyneedit.
Whatevertypicallycarriesyouthroughyourworkday,holdoffonitforawhile.
Delayedgratificationisalwaysbettergratification.
6.Refuelwellbeforeyouthinkyouneedto.
Waitinguntilyou'rethirstytodrinkwhenyou'reexercisingisalreadytoolate.
Thesameistruewhenyouwork.Plantoeatorsnackalittleearlierthannormal.If
yousitwhileyouwork,standuplongbeforeyourreargetsnumb.Ifyoustand,sit
longbeforeyourlegsstarttoache.Inshort,whenyouallowyourselftofeel
discomfortyourmotivationandresolvewillweakensodoeverythingpossibleto

theinternet.Youwillneedbreaks,butthosebreaksshouldreinforceyoursenseof
activityandaccomplishment.
Pickafewproductivetasksyouliketoperformandgainasenseof
accomplishmentfromandusethoseforyourbreaks.Spendingevenafew
minutesinthelandofinactivityweakensyourresolve.
8.Don'tquituntilyou'redoneeveniffinishingtakeslongerthanexpected.
Stoppingshortishabitforming.Ifyouquitthistime,whatwillkeepyoufromquitting
thenexttime?Answer:nothing.
Quittingisahabit,butstayingthecourseisalsoahabit(muchthesamewayit's
possibletodevelopgreatermentaltoughness.)Somakeyourfirstextreme

Justgothrougheachjobandaskthesamethreequestions:
1.Howdidyoufindoutaboutthejob?
2.Whatdidyoulikeaboutthejobbeforeyoustarted?
3.Whydidyouleave?
"What'samazing,"Youngertoldme,"isthatafterafewminutesyouwillalways
havelearnedsomethingaboutthecandidatewhetherpositiveornegativethat
youwouldneverhavelearnedotherwise."

"Howdidyoufindoutaboutthejob?"
Mostpeoplefindtheirfirstfewjobsongeneralpostings,onlinelistings,jobfairs,
etc,sothat'scertainlynotaredflag.
Butcandidateswhocontinuetofindeachsuccessivejobfromgeneralpostings
probablyhaven'tfiguredoutwhattheywanttodo...andwheretheywouldliketodo
it.Generallyspeakingthosepeoplearejustlookingforajoboften,anyjob.
Andthatprobablymeanstheyaren'tparticularlyeagertoworkforyou.Again,they
justwantajobandyourswilldo...untilsomethingelsecomesalong.

Intime,intervieweesshoulddescribethereasontheytookaparticularjobfor
reasonsmorespecificthan"greatopportunity,""chancetolearnabouttheindustry,"
or"nextstepinmycareer."
Greatemployeesdon'tworkhardsolelybecauseofloftytitlesorhugesalaries.
Theyworkhardbecausetheyappreciatetheirworkenvironmentandenjoywhat
theydo.(Titlesandsalaryarejusticingonthepersonalfulfillmentcake.)
Thatmeanstheyknowthekindofenvironmenttheywillthrivein,andtheyknowthe
typeofworkthatmotivatesandchallengesthemandnotonlycantheydescribe
it,theyactivelyseekit.
"Whydidyouleave?"
Sometimespeopleleaveforabetteropportunity.Sometimestheyleaveformore
money.
Often,though,peopleleavebecauseanemployerwastoodemanding.Orbecause
theydidn'tgetalongwiththeirboss.Ortheydidn'tgetalongwithcoworkers.
Whenthatisthecase,don'tbejudgmental.Holdontofollowupquestionsandstick
totherhythmofthethreequestions,becausethatmakesiteasierforcandidatesto
bemoreopenandcandidwhendiscussingsubsequentjobs.
Dothatandmanycandidateswilldescribeissueswithmanagementor
disagreementswithotheremployeesorwithtakingresponsibilityissuesthey
otherwisewouldnothaveshared.
