Howdidyoufirstgetstartedweaving?
It'sanoddstory.Mybrotherandhiswifetookcareofourcatwhilewewereonvacation,sowewantedtogetthema
presentofsomekind.Shewove,sowefoundacopyofabookonhowtoweaveaNavajorug.Wegaveittoherand
shewastotallydisinterestedinNavajoweaving.ButatChristmastheygavemethebookbackalongwithasimple
uprightloommadeoftwobyfours.IdecidedtogiveitatryandIwasinloveveryquickly.

Whatarethemainareasoffocusinyourclass?Howdoyougetbeginnerstofeelmoreconfidentontheloom?
OurclassiscalledBeginningWeavingandBeyond.Weusedtohavetwoclassesbutthenwedecidedtoshufflethem
togethersothatwegetstudentsofdifferentexperiencelevelsinthesameclass,andthatseemstoworkquitewell.
Everyoneseemstogetmoreoutofitthisway.I'mhopingattheendoffivedaysthey'llbeabletogohomeandstart
weavingimmediately.I'mtryingtogivethemasoundfoundationsothattheycankeepgoingontheirown.They're
workingwithmeallday,butintheeveningstheyhaveaccesstothestudio.Atthatpoint,there'sahugeamountof
learninggoingonthat'speertopeer,andthatreallyinspiresthe"learntoweave"people.

Thereareobviouslyanumberof
challengesthatcomewithlearning
somethingnew.Howdoyouhelp
beginnersovercomethoseobstacles?
IthasalotdowiththeatmospherethatI
project.Imakeabigdealaboutitwhen
we'restartingwarping,abouthowmany
thingsthebookstellyouthatarevitally
importantandthatyouhavetodoperfectly.
AndIsay,"Nah,it'snotlikethat.Itdoesn't
matter."I'mhopingthey'regoingtoleaveon
thatlastdayfeelinglikethere'salwaysan
answer,liketheycanalwaysfixit.Thereare
clearlyalotofcrappylearntoweave
classesoutthereandpeopleget
intimidated.Ifyou'reintimidated,youcan't
moveforwardbyyourself,andI'mtryingto
setthemuptosucceed.Andiftheymake
mistakes,it'snotabigdeal.

Whatadvicedoyouhaveforsomeone
whoisinterestedinlearningtoweave?
It'sgottabefun.There'sgottabeareasontogothroughtheprocess.Theatmosphereneedstobepositiveyou'dliketo
thinkthatyoucangetanybodyweaving,butoccasionallyyougetsomeonewhojustdoesn'tenjoyit,andthere'sjustno
pointtothat.Butwe'reverysuccessfulatturningpeopleontoit!

amazingit'ssortofthisfairytalelocation.They'vejustbeenincrediblysupportiveandtheygetmereallygoodstudents,
whichisalotoffunforme!

spaceforstudentsonthesecondfloor.Itisrelishedforitssunlitwindows,freshair,andtranquility.

stayonsiteattheCheshireMillsBoardingHouse,whichprovidedhousingforthespinningmillworkersfor
over120years.Aquickwalkawayfromthestudio,shop,andGeneralStoreandcafe,theBoardingHouse
offersaffordableaccommodationswithahistoricambianceforstudents.AstayatHarrisvilleDesignsalso
includesatourofthespinningmillandaninformalwineandcheesetogettoknowotherstudentsandstaff.
