The methods by which minerals are won from the ground depend chiefly
on the nature and form of the deposits, and the position they occupy
relative to the surface. About one-third of the ores produced comes from a
underground mine. Underground mining is mainly used for mining gold,
copper, lead, and zinc ores. Open pit mining methods are mainly used for
iron, aluminum, manganese, and copper ores. The average grade of
copper ore mined underground is higher than that of open pit ore. Open
pit mining is less costly than underground mining.
The mining industry is the major consumer of explosives used for
peaceful purposes. Dynamite, ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO), and
trinitrotoluene (TNT) are commonly used. Recently, the use of nuclear
devices as a substitute for chemical explosive has been suggested.
Underground detonation experiments have established the capability of a
nuclear explosive to break and fracture rocks.
The effects of a nuclear explosive is a function of the type of rock, the
yield of the device (usually expressed in kilo tons, i.e., the same amount
of energy as 1000 tons of TNT), and a depth of burial. The nuclear
explosive would be placed at a depth such that the radioactive products
are completely contained or, at most, only an insignificant fractions
escapes. Radioactive products are formed as a result of fission or fusion,
and bombardment of the ore and the container of the bomb with neutrons
released. Preliminary studies indicate that environmental radioactivity will
be manageable. Because of a large amount of energy released, the cost
per energy unit is low.

J. TRANSLATE THE FOLLOWING TEXT. ONE PARAGRAPH IN

ENGLISH MUST BE FOLLOWED BY THE TRANSLATION.
Underground mining
One of the first essentials in underground mining is to make entry to the
ore body. If the topography is suitable, as on a hilly ground, a tunnel may
be driven into it through the hillside. In the largest lead-zinc mine in the
world, the Sullivan Mine in British Columbia, the ore is transported
through a single tunnel few kilometers in length. Most ore bodies,
however, are reached through a vertical shaft, and in fewer cases through
an inclined shaft. Several mines have reached a vertical depth of over 3
kilometres below the surface.
In underground mining, tunnels, ventilation shafts, narrow gauge tracks,
elevators, etc., must be installed. A driller is at work at top, and below him
the slushermen scraps ore into a chute, from which it is charged into the
waiting ore cars. The room where the driller is working is called a stope.
Its walls are the ore body and stout posts support a timbered ceiling.
Holes are drilled in the wall, powder is inserted, fuses made ready, and at
the end of a shift the fuses are lighted and the miners depart. When the
charge is fired the whole wall, to a depth of two meters or more, crumbles
www.intermetperu.com

and falls to the floor below. The next shift of miners comes on; they timber
up the section which has just been blasted and proceed to drill another
two meters or so into the ore to make ready for another blast. The
operation is advanced step by step; for instance, a slice right across the
ore body is cut and removed as fast as it is broken. The next slice higher
up is then mined. But, to keep the mine safe, before starting a new slice,
the mined sections are filled with sand or tailings.
MINING IN PLACE
This method is used to mine water soluble underground ore deposits
such as potash, trona, etc. Water is injected into the bed and the brine is
pumped out in special holes drilled for that purpose. Mining of elemental
sulfur is a unique case of underground mining in place. The Frasch
process for mining sulfur was conceived and developed in the 1890s by
Herman Frasch to extract sulfur from Louisiana deposits that had resisted
mining by conventional methods. It is based on melting the sulfur by hot
water and bringing it up to the surface as a liquid.
