BJP tackles women woes

The Editors Column

Dear Student,
Welcome to the July Edition of the Law Bulletin.
The BJP has landed itself into some fresh trouble with
some of its leading ladies coming under the scanner
for various reasons. After Sushma Swaraj and
Vasundhara Raje got dragged into the LalitGate scam,
Smriti Irani was in the news for a fake degree case.

Just days after it completed one year in office,

Bharatiya Janata Party government is facing
trouble with names of two of its big faces
embroiled in controversy over former Indian
Premier League chief Lalit Modi.
Even as the BJP leaders were busy defending
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj over
allegations that she gave undue favours to Lalit
Modi to ensure that he got a visa for United
Kingdom, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara
Raje's name has also cropped up in the debate.
The documents released by Modi's lawyer claimed
that Vasundhara allegedly supported the former
IPL chief's immigration plea when she was Leader
of the Opposition in 2011. The documents claimed
that she gave her testimony supporting Modi on
the condition that it will not be revealed to Indian
authorities. The documents also reveal that she
helped former the former IPL chief get permit to
stay in the United Kingdom.
However, the Rajasthan Chief Minister broke her
silence on the documents and claimed that she is
"unaware" of any such documents. His legal team
also revealed that the Vasundhara Raje
government signed an Memorandum of The BJP is
already in a tight spot after the controversy broke
out over Sushma Swaraj procuring travel
documents for the Modi who is charged with
financial impropriety and who has been staying in
Britain since 2010.

Bangladesh won the three-match One Day

International (ODI) Series against India 2-1 played in
Dhaka. This was Bangladesh's first series win against
India. This series win helped Bangladesh to enter into
the Champions Trophy.
Religious tolerance has gone for a toss, with an
apparent bomb blast tearing through a mosque in
Kuwait's capital during prayers, killing at least 27
people and wounding at least 227 others.

Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals suspended for
two years by Justice Lodha panel
Justice RM Lodha-headed panel on IPL Betting Scandal
2013 suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) for
two years with immediate effect.
CSK was suspended by the panel citing operation rules
as CSK or India Cements took no action against
Meiyappan.
On the other hand, RR was suspended on account of
being directly responsible for putting the game into
disrepute and Raj Kundra's action was unacceptable.
The panel also suspended Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj
Kundra from all cricket matches for life as they were
found guilty of illegal betting. They both acted contrary
to the spirit of the game.
However, the panel gave no clarification on what
happens to the six players who were mentioned in the
sealed envelope submitted to the Supreme Court by the
Justice Mudgal panel.
Justice Lodha said that the decision will uphold the
spirit of the game and no one is bigger than the game.
First International Yoga Day observed globally
The first International Day of Yoga was observed
globally, celebrated across 192 nations including
Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
The celebrations of first International Yoga Day at
Rajpath in New Delhi saw setting of two Guinness
World Records (GWRs). These included participation of
most individuals and individuals from the largest
number of nationalities performing asanas at a single
venue. Around 36 thousand participants performed
asanas and 84 nationalities joined the official
observation.
The idea to celebrate 21 June, which is the Summer
Solstice, as the International Day of Yoga was mooted
by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 during his
address to the UN General Assembly.
Modi unveils National Policy for Skill Development
and Entrepreneurship 2015
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled National Policy
for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship 2015 in
New Delhi.
The policy was unveiled in a programme held on the
occasion of first-ever World Youth Skills Day.
It is the first such policy on entrepreneurship since
independence and intended to replace the National
Policy on Skill Development 2009.

NaMo launches AMRUT, Smart Cities Mission

and Housing for All
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched three
urban development schemes- AMRUT, Smart
Cities Mission and Housing for All (Urban) in New
Delhi.
During the occasion, he also released logos and
taglines for AMRUT and Smart Cities Mission; and
guidelines for AMRUT, Smart Cities Mission and
Housing for All (Urban).
Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban
Transformation (AMRUT): It is aimed at
developing infrastructure in 500 cities and towns
that are having a population of one lakh and
above with an outlay of 50000 crore rupees
between 2015-16 and 2019-20.
Smart Cities Mission: It is aimed at developing
100 smart cities across the country with an outlay
of 48000 crore rupees between 2015-16 and
2019-20.
Housing for All (Urban): The Central Sector
Scheme aimed at providing housing facilities to all
eligible people in urban areas by 2022.
Bombay HC allows Nestle India to export Maggi
noodles
The Bombay High Court granted permission to
Nestle India to export its 2-minute Maggi noodles.
It said that the ban on sale of the noodles within
the country will continue.
The direction was given while hearing petition
filed by Nestle India against food safety regulator
FSSAI's country-wide ban of Maggi noodles.
In its plea, Nestle demanded revoking of the ban
of the sale of Maggie in the country.
Earlier, the Food Safety and Standards Authority
of India (FSSAI) had justified its ban on Nestle
India's 2-minute Maggi noodles in questioning the
company's safety claims.
It said that 30 out of 72 samples tested positive
for dangerously high levels of lead and even MSG
(Monosodium Glutamate), despite the packets
no added MSG claim.
Further, it said that the present situation has
arisen because the petitioner had failed to adhere
to its own declared policy and principles.
Along with Maggi, other popular brands like Top
Ramen,
Wai
Wai,
Yippee
have
also
been banned.

Government hikes national floor-level minimum
wage to 160 rupees per day
The Union Government increased the national floorlevel minimum wage (NFLMW) to 160 rupees per
day from 137 rupees per day. The new rate will be
effective from 1 July 2015.
If states revise their minimum wages as per the new
NFLMW, the decision is expected to benefit millions
of workers in the scheduled employments in the
respective state jurisdictions.
It was fixed at 35 rupees per day in 1996 and has
since been revised almost regularly every two years
taking into account the increase in the CPI (IW).
It was last raised in July 2013 from 115 rupees a day
fixed in 2011.
India placed at 61st position in terms of foreigners
money in Swiss banks
India was placed at 61st position in terms of
foreigners money in Swiss banks. This was revealed
by latest data released by Swiss National Bank (SNB),
the Central Bank of Switzerland.
As per the data, India now accounts for a meagre
0.123 per cent of the total global wealth worth 1.6
trillion US dollars in Switzerland's banking system.
Indians' money in Swiss banks declined by over 10
percent to about 1.8 billion Swiss francs (1.98 billion
US dollars or 12615 crore rupees) in 2014.
This is the second lowest level of Indian money in
Swiss banks, after an increase of over 40 percent in
2013. Further, the decline comes amid an enhanced
clampdown against the famed secrecy wall of
Switzerland's banking system.
The big banks accounted for 1.48 billion Swiss francs
of Indians' money which was up from 1.36 billion
Swiss francs in 2013.
Paes, Sania win Wimbledon titles
Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis, the top-seeded
Indo-Swiss pair of Tennis won womens doubles title
at Wimbledon. In the title clash, the Indo-Swiss pair
defeated Russian duo of Ekaterina Makarova and
Elena Vesnina 5-7, 7-6, 7-5.
Meanwhile, seventh seed Indo-Swiss pair of Leander
Paes and Martina Hingis on won mixed doubles title
at Wimbledon. In the final clash, the duo defeated
the fifth seed Austrian-Hungarian team of Alexander
Peya and Timea Babos 6-1, 6-1. It was Paes 16th
Grand Slam trophy and eighth mixed doubles title.

First possible treatments for MERS identified
The team of researchers from University of
Maryland School of Medicine scientists (UMSOM)
identified two promising treatments to prevent
and treat deadly epidemic Middle East Respiratory
Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The findings
were published in journal Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
The University of Maryland School of Medicine
scientists and New York-based Regeneron
Pharmaceuticals Inc have discovered and validated
two therapeutics that show early promise in
preventing and treating the disease, which can
cause severe respiratory symptoms.
Hercules C-130 crashes; kills 113
A military transport plane Hercules C130 crashed
in a residential city of Medan, on the northern
island of Sumatra. The plane hit two houses and a
hotel before bursting into flames.
It is believed that all 113 people on board were
killed. Many of the passengers are thought to have
been relatives of servicemen and women.
The accident occurred when the Hercules
transport plane was on its way from an air force
base in Medan to Tanjung Pinang in Sumatra.
Medan, with about 3.4 million people, is the third
most populous city in Indonesia after the capital
Jakarta and Surabaya.
US apex court legalizes same-sex marriage
The United States (US) Supreme Court legalized
same-sex marriage across the nation in a closely
divided ruling by a 5 to 4 vote. The 28-page ruling
was made by Justice Anthony Kennedy and was
agreed by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen
G. Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.
With this ruling, now the states cannot deny
marriage rights enjoyed for thousands of years by
opposite-sex couples to gay men and lesbians. The
court ratified the Bill of Rights and added the
Fourteenth Amendment that states no state shall
deprive any person of life, liberty, or property,
without due process of law.
The Fourteenth Amendment requires a State to
license a marriage between two people of the
same sex and to recognize a marriage between
two people of the same sex when their marriage
was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-State.

Spotlight: Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna

CNLU is located in the ancient city of Patna, capital of Bihar, India. It was
established under the Chanakya National Law University Act, 2006 (Bihar Act
