Intro:
In less than 30 minutes this a.m., major news stations brought vividly to our attention the many
dangers that we are now seeing in our society. They made us aware of, told, showed, alerted,
and warned us of TERRORISM, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, EXTREME HEAT, UNHEALTHY
LIFESTYLES, etc. We were warned, in no uncertain terms, that "every one needed to take
heed to these warnings" and that "something needed to be done" about each of these because
of the serious consequences of not addressing them here and now (shortened life spans, sickness,
disease, destruction, and death).
In regards to Terrorism, one commentator profoundly said, "There really is evil in the world."
* Bombing buses w/children on them
* Bombing the U.N. bldg. In Iraq (help & food)
* Sniper in Virginia
He went on to say, "we have felt relatively safe anywhere until the U.N. bombing in Iraq...now
we know no one and no where is safe, or exempt from evil. Evil can attack any time, any
place, and use any technique."
If we will sit and allow news commentators to make us aware, tell, show, alert, and warn us of
eminent and evil dangers in today's world........
To make you aware, tell, show, alert and warn you of eminent (and eternal) evil danger!
For EVIL is EVIL ----> same source ----> any time, any place, and same techniques.
Satan (the source of EVIL) is taking down people by ways that are not fair (underhanded).
TRAITS of TERORISM TRAITS of SATAN Same as Terrorism
* Drugs/Addiction -- pain
> Evil (marked by spite, causing pain, injury, suffering, harm, & destruction) * Rebellion – religion, laws, morals
> Steal, kill, and destroy * Culture -- generational curses
> Hate peace * Disillusionment -- hypocritical living
> Hate democracy (freedom of choice) * Depression -- helpless / hopeless
> Disregard life * Sickness – stress, burnout
> Rule / Control by force, fear, & codependency * Sorrow/Grief/Pain
If we don't become aware and attack the root of this problem..........we will keep having bad, rotten fruit.
Matt. 3:10 “...the ax is laid upon the root....."
Don't stop abortion by lying down in front of the door....
Don't stop murder, rape, thieves by putting them behind bars....
Don't stop bad behavior, lawlessness, or evil tendencies by making new laws....
Must attack the root of the problem to stop the fruit from being bad.
How do we do this? -------> become aware of THE REALITY OF SIN. --> It is real!
It is alive!
It is working now!
* SIN is an issue that has not been clearly defined to most people. (* see attached --> List of SIN below)
* SIN is an issue that has not been spoken on with power and authority from God’s Word.
A story is told of a distinguished minister from Australia who preached a very strong message one
Sunday on the subject of SIN. After the service, one of the church members came to him to
counsel with him in his study and said, “ Bro.____, we don’t want you to talk as openly against
man’s corruption, because if you do, it will cause our youth to more easily become sinners due to
you discussing the subject. Call it a ‘mistake’ if you want, but don’t speak so plainly about sin.”
The minister took down a small bottle from the shelf and showed it to the visitor and said, “ Do you see the
label? It says strychnine, and underneath that in bold letters is the poison. Do you know, man, what
you’re asking me to do? You’re suggesting that I change the label. Suppose that I do and paste it
over with the words essence of peppermint. Do you see what might happen? Someone would use
it not knowing the dangers involved and would die-----AND SO IT IS, TOO, WITH THE MATTER
OF SIN!! The milder you make the label, the more dangerous the poison!”
* * We must speak plainly on this issue. * *
2. Must ACKNOWLEDGE Sin and Know that it has Serious Consequences.
* We should fear nothing but SIN! > destroys
> robs of our power
> confuses
> casts us on the mercy of Satan
> ultimately damns the soul to an eternal hell!
* SIN waits lurking to attack every soul born into this world – Ps. 51:5
-- Rom. 5:12, 17
** SIN rules every heart as the Lord of their souls from whom nobody escapes – Jn. 8:34
-- Rom. 6:16
*** SIN has infected every person on the face of the earth – Rom. 3:23
After all those years, De Vinci began the search for a face that had been hardened and distorted by sin
--- and at last he found a beggar on the streets of Rome with a face so villainous he shuddered when
he looked at him. He hired the man to sit for him as he painted the face of Judas on his canvas. When
he was about to dismiss the man, he said, "I have not yet found out your name." The reply came, "I am
PIETRO BANINELLI. I also sat for your model of Jesus Christ."
* SIN attacks every one at birth and before it's done it – degrades
debases
destroys ---> in an eternal hell! ! !
1. WHAT IS SIN?
2. WHAT DOES SIN LOOK LIKE?
3. DOES SIN AFFECT ME?
4. WHAT IS THE RESULT OF SIN?
5. WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT SIN?
1. WHAT IS SIN?
Anything as severe a SIN needs a definition so that we can understand it and thereby avoid it!
A. UNRIGHTEOUSNESS
I Jn. 5:17 "All unrighteousness is sin."
* conforming to right
"right" – by whose definition? Opinion? Standard?
> Our own?
> God?
God' standard of right is righteousness – Ps. 145:17
Jer.23:6
I Jn. 2:29
B. FAILURE TO DO GOOD
Jam. 4:17 “...to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin."
* violating a known command of God * SO SIMPLE!
Heb. 10:26-31
Lev. 4: 13-14
C. LACK OF CONVICTIONS
Rom. 14: 2-23 " Happy is he that condemneth not himself in the things he alloweth....
....for whatever is not of faith is sin."
* not true to your convictions (what you know is right)
* conscience condemns you
D. LAWLESSNESS
I John 3:4 "..sin is a transgression of the law" Rom. 3:20 "..for by the law is
* disobeying * God's t he knowledge of sin."
"Thou shalt"
"Thou shalt not"
"Put on"
"Put off"
"Let not these things be named among you"
This is all summed up in this: SIN IS LAWLESSNESS....not responding to the law of God,
but going beyond the bounds He has set
and setting your own.
EX: Man is like a horse in a lush pasture that jumps the fence and lands in the quagmire.
So man lives within the place of God's green pasture and finds that he wants to get out.
........and he leaps the wall of God's law and lands in the muck of SIN.
Because God's law is "holy and just and good" (Rom.7:12) there's nothing impure, unfair, or evil in it.
There is no reason to break it, because obedience to it is the path to blessings.
But, man breaks it, because man seeks to live apart from God's law.
A. DEFILEMENT
Rom. 1: 18-32 -- gross defilement
* Not only is SIN a defection and disobedience to God's law,
but it is a pollution of that law!
I Kgs. 8:38 -- compares Sin to man's heart with sores that come on the body from a
deadly plague.
Zech. 3:3 -- SIN as a filthy garment.
Zech. 11:8 -- "My soul loathed them...."
* God so despises SIN that He loathes what it does to the sinner.
Ezk. 20:43 -- When the repentant sinner see his SIN, he loathes himself.
II Cor. 7:1 -- "....filthiness of the flesh and spirit...."
* Over and over, scripture finds SIN as something vile, defiling, wretched, and filthy..........which pollutes that
which is pure!
B. REBELION
Lev. 26:27-28 -- SIN is defying God
Walking in opposition or antagonism to God.
Those who rebel and walk contrary to God.
Jer. 44: 17 -- "But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth.."
We will do exactly what we want! ! !
Heb. 10: 26-31 -- "..who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood
of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing.."
C. INGRATITUDE
Acts 17:28 -- "...for in him we live and move and have our being.."
* The very fact that you live and exist, you owe to God.
* We exist for a divine and glorious purpose.
* Though God literally surrounds the sinner with mercy, the sinner says "No",
and in hateful, open rebellion to the laws of God,
defiles himself and acts in gross ingratitude.
II Sam. 16: 15-17 Ex: Absalom, son of David, after he had kissed his father and embraced him,
went out and plotted treason against his own father.
D. INCURABLE
Jer. 12:23 -- “Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?'
* You can't make good out of bad -- man doesn't have the source within himself.
* SIN is an incurable disease without the DIVINE TOUCH of a supernatural God.
E. HATED BY GOD
SIN is the only thing God hates!
Hab. 1:13 -- “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity."
Jer. 44:4 -- “........Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate."
F. HARD AT WORK
All SIN causes pain, and yet, it's amazing how hard people are working at it daily.
Though SIN may bring temporary enjoyment.......it will ultimately bring grief, pain, death, and hell!
Jer. 9:5 -- Sadly Jeremiah admits that his people "weary themselves to commit iniquity''.
Prov. 4:16 -- “For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away,
Unless they cause some to fall."
It is amazing, but people go to hell sweating! ! ! .... they work hard at being sinners.
CONCLUSION:
I've painted the sinner pretty black........It's not a pretty picture.....no other way to disguise it.
It took the very death of Christ himself to remove SIN from the life of man.
We have arrived at a day and time when our own court system declares and determines that the
Ten Commandments "must go".
'Without laws (must be God's laws for it to succeed)---->man is lawless'.
> any thing goes
> any thing can happen
> any thing will happen
II Tim. 3:1 -- “This know also in the last days perilous times shall come."
If their life was to expire within 24 hours.....where would 'eternity' find them?
This is the one you are to stand in the gap for and focus on tonight.
