Introduction

WELCOME TO Advanced Road Design

Advanced Road Design has been designed to work with Civil 3D and automate the design of roads,
intersections, curb returns, cul-de-sacs, knuckles and roundabouts.
Help System
The Help system for Advanced Road Design has been divided into sections for:

Process and Workflow

Tutorials
Command Reference
Ancillary items

Process and Workflow

The most important part of the help system is the

This section of the Help System guides designers through the processes for maximizing your design
efficiency in road and subdivision design and correlates with the Tutorial processes.

Tutorials
The best way to learn to use the program, subject to training opportunities that may be available via your
local distributor, is by doing the tutorials and by experiment on the Tutorial Projects.
Upon installation of the software, resource training data is installed at C:\CADApps Training Data\... This
data set is referenced in the Tutorial help files so you can perform the same commands and know the
expected outcomes. This training data is also available on the installation CD to be copied onto any
computer.
The training tutorials introduce new users to the main functions and features of the software, with the
intention that designers will explore the other functionality once they have practiced 'the basics' and review
the functions in the software through this Help System.

Command Reference
The Command Reference section of the Help System is in menu order to assist navigation to commandrelated help relevant to the designer.
Most individual commands (help files) include three tabs:

Concept - a general introduction to what the command does

Procedure - detailed information on how to use the command and expected outputs
Reference - menu commands, icons and toolbars to access the particular function

Video files may be interspersed throughout the Help system to help explain certain commands, or
combination of commands, in the software. Where video files are available to view an icon of a
camera/video will be displayed. Simply click on the icon to open the relevant video file.

Ancillary Items
This section includes the following:

Menus and Toolbars - listing of menu and toolbar resources for starting commands
Software data files - learn where Advanced Road Design stores information
Design Rules and Terms Used - VITAL information on how the software works and what design
conventions, or 'rules', need to be considered when using the software
Configuration Files - Advanced Road Design includes a small number of configuration files that are
used as reference data to establish settings for new jobs and to store information to be accessible
on any job
FAQ's - Frequently asked questions (with answers!)
Wish list - Provides a link to an email address lodge any suggested improvements
Version History - details about the current software version
Bug Reports - list of known bugs at the time of software release, with workarounds where available
Definitions - list of common terms used in the program and alternative meanings for these terms
Network Common Files - Common files used by the program can be stored and used from a
network

Process Map

Advanced Road Design works by creating a complete design environment for your road networks and
exporting your design as profiles and corridor models for plotting output in your Civil 3D drawing.
The intention of the software is to provide an efficient and interactive design environment generating road
networks with intersections, cul-de-sacs, knuckles and roundabouts fully designed. Also included is
functionality to output the design directly into Civil 3D as a series of Civil 3D profiles and a single corridor
model for long section and cross section plotting and volume outputs.

To get the best out of the software there is a recommended fundamental workflow that should be followed in
your designs.

To view the standard workflow click on the

button, above.

Tutorials
In order to get started you should also refer to the Tutorials. The workflow supports the tutorial design
processes up to Road reconstruction.

Tutorials

A series of tutorials are included here to guide the user through the functionality in Advanced Road Design to
undertake a wide range of road design projects, from simple road design with volume and plotting outputs
through to roundabout design and road reconstruction.
Getting Started

Workflow

It is recommended that new users start at the

Tutorial Introduction and work their way up
through the later tutorials - knowledge is
assumed from the previous tutorials covered.

The tutorials follow a recommended workflow

process.

Title

Tutorial Introduction

Overview
This introduces the default storage location of the
tutorials and provides vital information about how
ARD works and best practice when using ARD.

Tutorial 1

Simple Road Design This is an introductory design project focussing

on the tools to design a road vertical grading,
create and apply typical cross sections, create a
surface model and generate volume reports,
cross sections and long sections

Tutorial 2

Simple Road Design This is an extension of Tutorial 1 with a focus on

- Adjusting the
the methods for adjusting the cross sections by
Cross Sections
deleting components, inserting new components,
varying slope/width and widening onto an
alignment. More advanced tools are covered in
the Tutorial 5 suite of projects

Tutorial 3

Multi Road Design

with Intersections

Setting up for multi-road design, creating side

roads and kerb returns. Surface model outputs

Tutorial 4

Cul-de-sacs, Bus
Bays, Knuckles and
Roundabouts

This is an extension of Tutorial 3, explaining the

methods for creating cul-de-sacs, bus bays,
knuckles and simple roundabouts.

Tutorial 5

See below for

individual tutorials:
Road Overlay

For this project the existing pavement requires an

overlay, with road widening. The design cross
section is to be lifted/lowered to ensure minimum
cover over the existing pavement.

Partial Road
Reconstruction

For this project the existing pavement is to be

retained and widened with new pavement,
including kerb and channel and a footpath on one
side. Batters are to match to property boundary
lines.

Intersection
Reconstruction
Incorporating a
Roundabout

For this project localised intersection works are

required to facilitate and control traffic
movements into a new roundabout.

- Tutorial 5c

- Tutorial 5d

Kerb Reconstruction For this project localised intersection works are

required to widen and reconstruct a kerb return.

- Tutorial 5e

String Design

For this project it is required to undertake an

intersection reconstruction incorporating kerb
outstands and 45 degree angle parking. This will
expose the functionality of string design.

Tutorial 6

Rural Road Design - This project focuses on a typical rural road

Superelevation
design requiring superelevation of the pavement
and shoulders and incorporating table drains.

Tutorial 7

Civil 3D Outputs

This is an extension of Tutorial 3 with

demonstration of the process for creating Civil 3D
Profiles and a Civil 3D Corridor object from the
design data

Tutorial 8

Visualisation

Explores the functionality within the software to

export the surface data onto layer discriminated
3D faces for better visualisation of your designs
