TO BE OFFERED IN PORTVILLE
Portville, NY- Outside, adults were scrambling like
enthusiastic children through the woods, diving under dead
brush, burying themselves into snow, trying to hide behind
large trees. They were the “rabbits” and they had exactly
twenty seconds to shield themselves from the “hawks”. Times
up and from the “hawks”, one shouts “I see you”, another
exclaimed “you’re dinner!”
These excited adults were participating in Project WILD,
a teacher-training program involving wildlife ecology and the
natural environment. The activity was one of many they
experienced first-hand as they trained to facilitate Project
WILD to their students, scouts, and other youth.
Pfeiffer Nature Center, working in cooperation with the
Cattaraugus Allegany Teacher Center will offer Project WILD
training on Tuesday, March 9 from 12 noon to 3:30 p.m. at
Portville Presbyterian Church. The workshop is free for
teachers, a fee will be charged for all others. Pre-registration is
required.
Project WILD trains teachers and other youth educators
to teach Kindergarten through twelfth grade children about
wildlife and resource conservation through science, math,
social studies, and reading both inside and outside of the
classroom. The curriculum utilizes fun, engaging activities
that often look like games of tag but they are really effective
tools at getting children to understand complex topics like
wildlife population dynamics.
“I can use Project WILD as a supplement in almost any
science class I teach. Its strongest points are that it is concise,
requires few materials and yet is thorough in every respect in
dealing with concepts of wildlife biology and environmental
science. What I really like is that I can accomplish in a class
period or two major science activities that would normally take
several days using most other curriculum materials,” said Bill
Ingram.
Project WILD curriculum and activity guide represent a
collection of over 120 broad-based wildlife resource activities
that are hands-on, easy to use and fun. This training is
appropriate for teachers working with grades K - 12, but other
community members such as scout leaders, youth leaders, and
volunteer naturalists find this information useful in their
work. Participants will receive the Project WILD curriculum &
activity guide, practice implementation of activities, and
assessment ideas. Established in 1983, Project WILD is the
nation’s longest standing wildlife education program and is
distributed nationwide by the Council for Environmental
Education through partnerships with state wildlife agencies.
CEE is a national non-profit environmental education
organization, founded in 1970, and based in Houston, Texas. In
New York, Project WILD is sponsored by the New York State
Department of Environmental Conservation.

Prepaid Plans Limit Cell Phone Costs
Not everyone wants a cell phone that takes and send pictures,
sends text messages, connects to the Internet to receive and send e-mail,
and has custom graphics, a finger touch-screen, music player, video
capture and voice memo. Sometimes people just want a phone that takes
and makes calls -- and cheaply.
Choosing a cell-phone plan can be just as complicated.
When you’re hunting for a cell-phone plan, maybe the best one is
no plan at all. Consider whether a prepaid phone service is right for you.
Typically, this means you’d buy an inexpensive, no-frills phone
(although with many of them you can receive text messages).
With a prepaid plan, you pay for the phone up front. There’s no
credit check, no contract to sign, no monthly charges. You pay in
advance for your minutes. The more minutes you buy, the longer you
have to use them because the minutes generally don’t roll over.
Even with prepaid phone service, beware the cost of daily use.
There’s a tradeoff between the number of days you’ll use your phone
and the cost of each minute. For example, with one large carrier, your
access cost on the days you use the phone is $3.99 but your minutes are
free, with text messages only costing 1 cent. On the other end of that
spectrum, there are no-frills basic services that cost you nothing to make
calls on a daily basis, but each minute of calling costs 25 cents with 20
cents for each text message.
For low-minute users, there are a few big-name carriers that offer
1,000 minutes for $100, and the minutes don’t expire for a year. Sign up
for more minutes before expiration, and those old minutes will roll over.
You’ll pay $1 for access on the first call of any day, and all calls are 10
cents per minute.
Consider who’s going to be using the phone, and how. A prepaid
phone and service can be good for a teenager who needs to learn about
setting limits, especially if that teen has run up astronomical phone bills
in the past.
Here’s the best part about not signing a contract: If you absolutely
hate your carrier or your phone, there’s no problem with changing to
another.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a
neighbor in my apartment building who
I occasionally see carrying his little
Pekingese outside, setting her on the
sidewalk and holding her by the tail as
he encourages her to “go.” He’s a very
nice guy, and other than this unusual
method is kind to his dog, but I think
this is a very inappropriate way to
handle a dog. Is there anything I can do to help this little dog? --
Concerned in Framingham, Mass.
DEAR CONCERNED: Communication is the best way to deal
with any perceived problem. If he’s a nice guy and you have spoken
with him before, come down and say hello to him when he’s outside
with his dog. Ask if you can pet the dog.
You’ll want to broach the subject of the tail-holding during the
conversation. Ask him if he has a leash for the dog and why he doesn’t
use it. There may be a reason why -- such as the dog not behaving well
while on the leash.
If behavior is an issue, ask what kind of leash he’s using. Some
dogs do better using a harness-type leash, because it fits them more
comfortably than a collar type. There’s also a lot of advice available to
help owners train their dogs to behave on the leash, so perhaps you can
get him a book on the subject or, if you own a dog, offer pointers.
Some owners don’t put a leash on their dog because they claim
not to have the time. If this is the reason, gently remind him that the
leash is for the dog’s safety and that it may help her “go” more
comfortably than the current method.
In any case, keep the conversation light and casual, or at least
polite. Striking up a friendship can be rewarding for your neighbor,
youself and his dog.

movie “You Don’t Know Jack,” which is based on the life of assisted-
suicide advocate Dr. Jack Kevorkian. The multi-award-winning star,

Danny Huston and Brenda Vaccaro in the Barry Levinson-directed
biopic, which will be released later this year. He also just began
production as King Lear in “King Lear” and has a half-dozen movies

On Saturday, March 6, 2010 Cornell University Cooperative
Extension will be sponsoring the 18th Annual Rural
Landowner Workshop. The program will begin at 9am and end

The Rural Landowner Workshop is a regional program

adjust to the Capital Stock and
Franchise tax rate increase enacted
late last year. Now these firms are
slashing prices to attract customers
which have led to lower profits. Their
message to the governor on his
proposed tax increases: ‘Thanks, but
we already gave at the office.’
