It was really interesting and

enlightening to get under the
skin of the architecture scene
in India doing the juries, - and
also great fun to spend time
with the other jury members
too. It was also very well
organised, and I much enjoyed
working with your team. I
hope you also feel the event
was a success, and good luck
with its future!

The ARTISTS IN CONCRETE AWARDS (AICA) ASIA FEST is an annual celebration of

recognising and appreciating excellence in the fields of Architecture, Interior Design
and Landscape. In the past seven years, the AICA Asia Fest has grown in content and
name, to emerge as one of the leading award functions and architecture festivals in
the country. Last year alone, AICA received over 200 participations from architects
and designers, across India. More than 70 renowned architects from across the
world have been part of the same as jury and speakers.
AICA began in 2007, as a need to recognize and award notable projects in the
Construction Industry. This would help encourage good quality projects across India.
Over the course of time, it was realized that quality of projects involves good design
thinking within its core premise, and thus the expansion into celebrating excellence
in design and recognising good work was implemented.

AICA 2016
The 8th year of AICA will be a Festival of Architecture in the true sense. Over fifty
eminent international and national architects will converge here as jury and
speakers through the three days. The Fest will also host great masters like Dr. Ken
Yeang, Massimiliano Fuksas, Will Alsop, Jurgen Mayer and Dominique Perrault,
who will share their views and present their works. There will also be about 24
panel discussions, 50 presentations and 10 workshops during the Fest.
One of the many highlights of this event is the 'Wall of Fame'. A 100m long display
wall will showcase the works of all the AICA participants and jury members on one
side. On the other side, 100 well-known architects will be given a canvas to paint
their thoughts and feelings on architecture. These works of art will be on display for
all three days of the event.
Apart from the above, there will be a grand Awards Function; and central Material
Pavilions, wherein each pavilion will be designed as a collaboration between an
architect and a material company. A Product Fashion Show will allow
manufacturers to showcase their products in an unique manner. The AICA Asia Fest
will be a great place for networking opportunities and interactions between
Industry and Students.
Inspire and be Inspired!
Looking forward to your participation.
THE AICA TEAM.

along with relevant information, at the earliest. Registration will be complete once
you get the 6 digit registration number.
E. ENTRY: Participants can file their nominations in any ONE of the following
entries only.
F. COMPETITION NOTE:
Participants are requested to file their nominations for the said categories.
1. ARCHITECTURE: 'FLEXIBLE URBAN LIVING'
With 'glocal' becoming the new design ideology that is favoured currently,
architecture is rapidly becoming a mix of new technologies and ideas of spacebuilding with a hint of local flavour. But as society has changed over the years,
bringing about nuclear families, inward-looking architecture, virtual communication
and more; a sense of community has and is fast disappearing. Our earlier housing
methods, still practiced in rural parts of India, imbibe the sense of community and
collaboration.
Architecture is capable of improving the current residential stock of urban living.
What we need is to go beyond 'boxes', and adapt new technologies and methods to
traditional layouts. Currently, everything is about 'square feet'. How do we adapt or
design this space/sqft intelligently to maximize it, so that we are building in a more
humane manner? Can we design buildings that encourage people to interact, or
make it safer for them, not just within their own four walls, but within the building
structure itself? How can we explore our traditional sensibilities into a
contemporary program or function? Can the spaces be multi-functional units, not
seen in isolation, but designed horizontally and vertically to generate high living
qualities and therefore more liveable cities? Can we work out a flexible system for
every family, keeping in mind that private, semi-private and public spaces are yet
defined? Can we adapt our architecture to extend, enlarge or shrink living spaces
without much effort? The competition seeks variable design solutions for the same.
The solutions can be through exploration of components like construction
techniques, materials/finishes and technology to perhaps create flexible or adaptive
spaces. The competition also seeks suggestions to policy makers, to encourage good
design practice and therefore better living.
2. INTERIOR DESIGN: INTERIOR PUBLIC SPACES
Public spaces play a critical role in our plans to create a good quality living
environment. They serve as venues for communities to gather, interact and help
strengthen social identity and foster community bonding. Can a good public space
influence social behavior and make a city more secure and friendly? So often than
not, people shy away from visiting public spaces like museums or galleries. Places
like the metro stations, airports, railway stations or even government offices are
those that envelop surges of people, but hardly engage anyone. Can we redesign
the interiors of a public space so that they are inviting, encourage people to visit,
engage the senses and allow for interaction? The aim is to redesign the interiors of a
public space through good design thinking and interventions.
Interior Design has tremendous influence in creating a 'sense' of a space. How does
one create a sense of space for the public buildings in India, so that the people or
users value it, feel a sense of ownership; thereby protect it rather than destroy it? A
good design intervention will help bridge the gap between these spaces in the
urban context. Design solutions that go beyond the functional or styling aspect and
help in creating a sense of pride, belonging and experience, are invited from the
participants.

3. LANDSCAPE: 'MULTI-FUNCTIONAL
LANDSCAPE'
Landscape can be interpreted in many ways; a
green space in an apartment, a vertical garden in
an office, an open court between two buildings;
the possibilities of making your surroundings
green are immense. It connects the inside and
outside at different vertical levels. Landscapes that
surround, or are surrounded by metropolitan or
urbanised areas are under pressure. Monofunctional landscapes as such do not fit our
accelerating and expanding life styles any more.
How do we create examples of high performance,
emphatic landscape design that stand out and are
able to :
a. facilitate and support large variations of
programs for citizens of all ages?
b. take responsibility to reintegrate local and
cultural characteristics?
c. serve local communities?
d. deliver adaptable environments for our rapidly
changing life styles?
A design solution that can address multiple or all
of the above issues through appropriate response,
will be sought through the competition.
G. SUBMISSION FORMAT:
Each registered participant has to submit soft
copies of the project in the required panel format.
Participants can submit a maximum of 4 panels.
Panel size: A2 (portrait or landscape); with 1.5
strip left at the bottom of the panel. Mention the
6 digit registration number on the right hand side
at the bottom of the panel.
Panel Composition:
1. CONCEPT NOTE + relevant contextual
information.
2. Layout and relevant drawings + details.
