"TREASURE IN JARS OF CLAY'

Global Missionary Ministries Is happy to inform our

friends and all who read The Crierihai as of February
17, 2007 David and Sandy Hatfield of Brighton,
Michigan, are part of GMM!

Having worl<ed with us over the past 10 years on

different short-term mission projects in Europe, David
and Sandy have now entered full-time mission work.
We will continue working together, building Christ's
Church In the post-communist environment of Central
and Eastern Europe.

New Missionaries with GMM

David and Sandy Hatfield have been accepted by the

Board of Directors to serve as missionaries with Global

Missionary Ministries. They have had a relationship with

GMM for many years. Going back as far as the 1960's,
Sandy already played the piano for George Bajenski dur
ing his visits at her church in Bloomington, IL
Both David and Sandy graduated from Lincoln
Christian College and Seminary, having received under
graduate and graduate degrees. They sen/ed local
churches in Illinois, Indiana and most recently in Brighton,
Michigan where they served for the past 17 years. Over
the years they have led or been involved in more than 30
short-term mission trips.
During the last four summers David and Sandy direct
ed camps for Jewish children in Poland and Ukraine. As
their involvement in working with us increased, it became
more and more apparent that God was calling them to fulltime mission work. They shared their desire and this led to
further discussion with the Board of Directors accepting
them for full-time service with GMM.

David is gifted administratively and finds great joy in

gathering teams and orchestrating all the details for shortterm mission trips. He is a true "pastor" and loves to propel
people into the service that God has prepared in advance

David and Sandy's 3 children, Kezia (23), Josiah (20)
and Kenan (15), have joined them in their summer camp
ministries in Poland and Ukraine and are excited about

this new journey of faith for the family.

for them to do. He is committed to the Church and has a

strong desire to see healthy churches established and

growing. He is a strong facilitator and looks forward to
teaching and encouraging leaders and workers in the
churches of Central and Eastern Europe.
Sandy has been involved in worship and music min
istry. Over the years she, too, has established strong rela
tionships with a Christian organization, called Missio
Musica in Poland, who has partnered in ministry with
GMM. Sandy possesses the gift of teaching and plans to
continue teaching principles of worship, as well as Bible
and English classes for camp students. In the past several
years Sandy has coordinated partnerships with Eastern

Recent trip to Russia

Recently Sandy and two of our Polish coworkers,
Kazik Barchuk and Zbigniew Chojnacki, Director of
Ostroda Camp, traveled by car from the cities of Ostroda,
Poland, to Kaliningrad, Russia, which are about 70 miles
apart. They went to make arrangements for a group of
Jewish children to come to Ostroda Camp this summer. It
was Sandy's first experience of crossing the border into
Russia. Here are a few excerpts of her personal experi
ence:

"We arrived at the Russian border. We had to wait

about 1 hour... fortunately, there were no problems. Then

began a whirlwind of events. I checked into my hotel. I
took the small elevator to the hotel's 5^*^ floor. I was

amused (actually, I laughed out loud) at the sign posted on

the inside of the elevator, written in English: 'If you have
problems with elevaror, please don't worri. Don't worri if
the lights turns off.' Great, huh? And then when the "ele
varor" stopped at the 5'^^ floor, it was about 5 inches short

of being even with the floor. I loved it! But my room was
nice and I had everything I needed.
From there we drove to the Jewish community center
to meet with Rabbi S. We met with him for about 14 hour.

The Rabbi was very pleasant, yet he was still very hesitant
about letting his children come to our camp. He will possi
bly bring his children for a weekend Shabbat. They took us
to a public school where special classes are set up for
Jewish children. We visited 3 classes and 1enjoyed the

children so much. Some of these children will come to our

summer camp. We also drove to a children's center,

where they bring in children off the streets. We met with
their leader, Sergey, and they will most likely bring 20 chil
dren to the camp in June.
On our return trip we arrived at the border. We found a
line of hundreds of cars and trucks all waiting to cross the

help them in their camp ministries. Also, Good News

Church from Minsk, Belarus, would like to send their youth
group to our camp in Poland. In response to our recent
visit in the Russian city of Kaliningrad approximately 60
children will be coming to Poland. Many of these children
are from Jewish families. They will come to this beautiful
lake region of northeastern Poland to meet new friends, to
enjoy good food, to rest and have some fun. Most of all,
they will come to hear God's Truth that we find in his
Word. In addition, we will be involved in 12 regular weeks
of camp in Ostroda. Please remember these children and
all of us working with them. May this be truly not just a
one-time camp experience for them, but the start of a life
long journey with Jesus.
Many of these children are not able to pay for their
stay at the camps. We would like to provide them with
such a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, each
child's stay does cost. For one child to be at camp for one
day we have to pay approximately $12, which means a
10-day stay will cost 120 US dollars. Dear friend, could

border. Some of them had been there for 3 days. They

sleep in their cars, go to the bathroom in the woods, etc. It
is crazy! When we got to the main gate, the guards

opened the gate just for our car (I was feeling like quite the
VIP - in a nervous sort of way). We had to enter a special
building to have our passports processed. Altogether it
took us 45 minutes to cross, and we were shouting "woohool" when the bar lifted and we drove into Poland. We

are so fortunate to live in freedom in our country."

It won't be long...
Summer is on its way. It won't be long and we will find
ourselves in the midst of busy summer church camp activi
ties in Poland, Belarus and Ukraine. Camps are one of the
most effective methods of growing and building churches
in today's Europe. At the morhent we have 2 written
requests from churches in western Ukraine, asking us to

you help us in the camp ministry? We would kindly ask

you to sponsor one child for a week or for a day, as you
are able. Send your contribution to GMM with a designa
tion stating: "Camp Fund."
As we consider the subject of finances, we would like
to say that this will be the first season David and Sandy
are with GMM on full-time mission basis in Europe. We
thank God for all they bring into this mission. However,
with the ministry's expansion, financial needs are also
expanding. We are still 30% shy of needed total support
related to this growing process. It would sincerely be
appreciated if you could help GMM during this time of
need with a one-time gift or ongoing pledged commitment.
If you would like David and Sandy to visit your church,
Sunday School or to meet with your missions committee,
we will be happy to hear from you. We continue to praise
and thank God for his faithfulness and provision.

When TCM moved its office to Indianapolis, IN, Charles

It was a privilege to work with Charles spreading

living under communist oppression.

WELCOME to "Os-troo-da'

Ostroda...what and where is it? This is a city

located in the north-eastern region of Poland called
Mazury. This small community has become known
throughout the country because of its Christian wit
ness. Its visible influence is felt not only in Poland, but
also in other parts of Europe.
The city itself has about 30,000 inhabitants, while
throughout the summer season its population increas

across Poland were coming to Ostroda. Here we sang,

played, taught and preached the Word of God. The
rest was in God's hands. He was doing what he
always does! Today we are happy to tell you that over
the years this humble Christian Camp has raised a

At present within the city of Ostroda there is one
independent Christian Church, a Christian Senior

Roman Catholic Churches.

Ostroda also has a privately owned radio station,

One can say, there is now an ever-present witness for

However, much remains to be done!

We pray that God will continue to use us in

accomplishing his purposes in the city of Ostroda and
surrounding area.

A Unique Camper

Zbignew Chojnacki, Director of Ostroda Camp

writes: "Soon we will start another busy camp sea
son. This year we are anticipating over a thousand
young people and adults who will attend our camps,
retreats, various seminars and workshops. There
will be many decisions made for Christ on this 'holy
ground.' Please remember us in your prayers. To
illustrate what I mean, I would like to share with you
one unforgettable experience from last season.
Matthew, an 11 year old boy, came to our camp
with his brother, Przemek. He walked into my office.
I shook his hand and gave him a hug. But I noticed
that something was missing. As we talked, he was
not steady on his feet, occasionally losing his bal
ance. Soon I noticed that he had no left arm. An

girl but then changed their minds when they heard
about Matthew. They adopted him because they
knew that no one else would care to adopt him due
to his physical condition.
All through camp Matthew was very attentive
and open to the Gospel. He never forgot nor
skipped any time of worship. We were closing one
worship service with an invitation and prayer.
Matthew came forward, he started to pray, thanking
God for new friends, for this camp, for a good
Christian atmosphere and for Jesus. Many of us
had tears in our eyes. Inspite of his physical handi
cap, Matthew was strong in the Lord.

Outdoor Bible study

hour later I saw him walking on his knees. I was

shocked to discover that the lower parts of his legs
were missing. When he came to my office, he was
using his artificial limbs.
Matthew was the youngest person at that partic
ular camp but he was a unique example in other
ways. Everybody loved Matthew. You should have
seen how well he could swim or play ball. Once a
group of boys was going to play soccer. Matthew
asked: "May I come with you?" They looked at him
and replied: "Yes, but first go to your room and put
on your legs." It sounded funny, but they were seri
ous. Matthew played with them as the goal keeper.

Summer of 2007 at Ostroda

The summer of 2007 at Ostroda Camp will be

initiated this year with a community outreach called
"Ostroda Sobriety Days." This is a little unusual
name for a Christian Camp, but this is Poland, and
alcoholism is a major problem. To help ease this sit
uation, local church leadership, in cooperation with
the city council, is organizing such an event at
Ostroda Camp. This gives us an opportunity to
teach and present the Gospel of Christ to individu
als and families who are affected by alcohol abuse.

From May 28'h we will be conducting a Bible

Camp-Retreat under the theme of, "Vacation with
the Bible." This will be an international group of
seniors from Russia, Belarus and Poland. During
this week we are anticipating guests and a mission
team from the USA and Canada.

From June 11^^^ a camp for Jewish children will

take place. The children will come from the Russian

Jewish leader and teens

From August
a camp will be designated to
teaching music and training church worship leaders.
Teaching will be conducted by Missio Musics and
guests from the United States.
From August 28^^^ a unique Camp Rally for past
campers (from the 70's and 80's) will be celebrated.
Those present like to be known as the generation
that is "forever young."
In September there will be another session of
"Ostroda Sobriety Days." In October we plan to initi
ate an ongoing training program designated for
church worship leaders. These workshops will be
conducted under the guidance of our Polish partner,
a professional Christian music association called
Missio Musica. This will be the beginning of our
ongoing strategic leadership training program in
Poland. We covet your interest, prayers and finan
cial help in this unique ministry.

All together we need to raise $25,000 US to

cover additional mission expenses for GMM's sum

Thank you for assisting, and please remember

us and all our coworkers throughout this summer.

Last November Zbigniew Chojnacki, Camp

Director, had a most unique opportunity to talk
about Ostroda with the American ambassador to

Poland and the mayor of Ostroda. The ambassador

was impressed with this region, especially with the
fact that so many American Christians visit Ostroda
Camp. Zbigniew writes: "I asked Mr. Ambassador to
visit us during one of our camp sessions, when we
have visitors from the United States. The ambas

sador responded by saying: 'It will be my pleasure

and honor to come'."

Yes, sometimes we may feel overwhelmed

when we are called to minister to those who are

wise and influential, or, as apostle Paul states, to

the foolish. This might be a younger or older one
who will challenge us, or a person of a different cul
ture or ethnic group. Yet, we are "eager to preach
the Gospel...for it is the power of God that brings
salvation to everyone who believes" (Rom. 1:1516).

ood News Church takes seriously Christ's

command to evangelize their nation. Thus,
there is a special emphasis on evangelism.

the children that attend the Sunday school pro
gram. During such concerts believers share their
testimonies how they came to personal living faith
in Christ and how He helps them live a meaningful
life.

Another form of evangelism is the "Alpha

Course" that runs from October to December.

Those who wish to hear more about the Gospel of

Christ and how it can affect their lives are invited to

come for a meal, followed by a session on some

aspect of the Christian life. They sit at tables with

friendly and outgoing. She came back and, in fact,

attended several services. She began to ponder her
own relationship with Christ. This eventually led to
her conversion and recent baptism.
The leaders of Good News Church also recog
nize that Christians need instruction in practical
Christian living and spiritual growth. Their sermons
answer life's commonplace questions and show
how Scriptural principles can be applied to help
people cope with life's complexities. Church mem
bers conduct seminars that deal with specific areas
of life, such as marriage-enrichment and Biblical
family living. A program of discipleship brings
together spiritual mentors and mentees. Over 30
small groups of members and adherents meet in
private apartments where leaders conduct Bible

further English lessons, using advertisements in the

local newspapers. Literally thousands come to learn
the language with native English speakers being
present. This is an intense course, but has brought
many into contact with the Biblical message.
A mother of a young man that took the English
course became quite upset at the "other intention"
that her son succumbed to, namely, to make believ
ers of people according to the teaching of the Bible.
She became so disturbed that she visited a govern
ment office to complain to an official about that
Church's alternative purpose rather than to just
teach English. It changed her son's faith after taking
the English course. The lady behind the desk sug
gested that the mother should go to the church and
listen to what the believers are saying and how they
act. So she did as suggested and found the people

Another area of Good News involvement is that

of educating church leaders to start new churches

and to train lay people to be actively involved in
leadership roles. Dima meets on a monthly basis
with forty pastors from the Minsk Oblast (region) for
this purpose. Preachers' wives also attend to dis
cuss issues that pertain to their roles within their
congregations. Leadership schools are also held in
other oblasts of Belarus.

We truly appreciate and recommend this work of

God with which GMM partners in Minsk and
Belarus. Together let us ask the Lord to make them
increasingly effective in reaching their nation for

the needs of people in the name of Yeshua, Jesus.

As we consider the future, we continue to pray
that God will show us how we (and North American
churches) can further partner with them in ministry.

People at Ostroda hear the message of Christ

and respond positively. For example, in June,
Sandy Hatfield spoke about Christ as teacher, heal
er, creator, risen Lord. After the teaching session,

two ladies came to her, speaking in Russian. Sandy

called George Repetski for a translation, and one of

the ladies, Mariya, wanted to repent right at that

moment and invite Jesus to become her Saviour.

Vlad, Sandy & David Hatfield, Paula Styles, Sveta

George asked several questions and led her in a

prayer of repentance and confession. Mariya
prayed earnestly with tears streaming down her
cheeks. She was from Kaliningrad. We told Luda,
the group's leader, how Mariya came and prayed.
Luda told us that they will continue to instruct
Mariya in the things of the Lord and baptize her.

uring our visit to Minsk, Belarus, we had

-My the privilege of w/orshipping with the "Star

of Bethlehem" Messianic congregation. Vlad, their
leader, has brought groups to Ostroda Camp in
Poland since 2004, and GMM has developed close
relationships with his family and other members of
his congregation.
On Friday evening we met in a small apartment
and celebrated a "Shabbat" meal together, com
plete with the lighting of candles, prayers, and
songs of joy. Ten such home groups ("warm"
places, as the members of the congregation like to
call them, where Jewish people can gather) meet
throughout the city. Their "Shabbat" service began
on Saturday at 2pm and about 150 people gathered
to enjoy three hours of singing, Scripture reading,
testimony, preaching, and times for repentance and
commitment. As part of the service, George

This is but one example of life-changing deci

sions made at Ostroda Camp by many people from
the former Soviet Union and Poland.

Funds are still needed to pay all the bills that are
coming in to conduct camp programs. Would you
make this a consideration? You are not just giving a
financial gift, but blessing many lives.
Ostroda Camp does bring results!

Father, your gifts are priceless. You gave your Son,

Jesus, to save us and your motivation was love. We pray
that the gifts we give to others will come from an overflow
of our hearts, and that they will echo the great love that
you have for all of your children. We sincerely wish you,
dear friends, a wonderful Christmas and the Lord's rich

est blessings in 2008. Thank you for your prayers and

support.

Warm Christmas greetings to all from the Hatfield
family. We are humbled by God's faithfulness and provi
sion during this past year of 2007.
He has protected us along the way and has provided
all our needs.

His Word has been a lamp to our feet and a light to

our path. His Wisdom has kept us safe. His Ways have
remained perfect.
We rejoice in Jesus, the Light of our salvation, and
trust Him to lead us in the days ahead. We give thanks
for each of you and for your partnership in making Jesus
known in Central and Eastern Europe. May the joy of
knowing Him fill your homes with hope and peace during
the holiday season.
Love, Sandy, Dave, Kenan, Kezia, and Josiah

The chorus, Heavenly Sunshine, which we used to

sing some years ago, is not a Christmas chorus, but like
many other songs, it brings peace and joy to our hearts,
especially when we come to the closing words,
"Hallelujah, Jesus is mine!"
Yes, He was born that we may be where He lives for
ever. We thank you, Lord, for peace, joy and the blessed
assurance that we have in Jesus. This is also our wish

for you, our friends, during this Christmas season. Have

a very Merry and Blessed Christmas.
