RECORD NOTE OF FIRST MEETING OF THE WORKING GROUP,

HELD ON 16TH SEPTEMBER 2013


The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa constituted various Working Groups for the
government Departments to suggest launching of new programs and improving service
delivery of the Provincial Government. First meeting of the Working Group for Sports,
Tourism, Archaeology, Museums and Youth Affairs was held in the Conference Hall of
the Department under the chairmanship of Mr. Mahmud Khan, Minister in-charge for the
Department. List of participants is attached as Annex-I.
Welcoming the participants, the chair observed that this Working Group was constituted
for a specific task as mentioned in the Notification of the WG. He hoped that the experts
around the table would come up with workable and implementable suggestions for the
Department.
Mr. Tarik Jamil, Secretary of the Department, presented the Departments overall vision
and areas of focus for the coming years (copy of presentation attached as Annex-II).
He then requested the participants to deliberate upon their areas of expertise and come
up with specific recommendations. The participants, while appreciating and approving
the new schemes already initiated by the Administrative Department, proposed to add
following:
Tourism:

Serena Hotel Swat should be handed over to the Tourism Department;


Proper mapping of important lakes /tracks in the Province should be done;
Tourism should be promoted through use of Information Technology.
Cultural & tourism events may also be arranged for Peshawar.

Sports:

Hayatabad Sports Stadium should be got transferred from PDA to the Sports

Department on ownership basis.


In lieu of the recreational facilities abolished from the Army Stadium, the
provincial government should provide similar facilities at another suitable place in
Peshawar. Private sector could be involved for this purpose.

Archaeology and Museums:

Archaeological sites in Peshawar, like Gor Khathree and Sethi house, should be

promoted for tourism;


Archaeology Department should be re-structured and strengthened, based on

new responsibilities after devolution;


Archaeologists should be recruited for technical jobs;

Archaeological sites should be properly demarcated and lands should be

acquired after making due payments to the parties;


Tourist facilities, like guides and washrooms, should be provided at the important

archaeological sites;
PAITHOM courses should be synchronized with the University programs and

courses;
Construction of roads and government buildings etc. require NOC from

Archaeologists Department;
Museums should be constructed on the basis of available antiquities and proper

size shelves should be provided therein;


A special committee consisting of Archaeologists should be constituted for

supervision conservation processes;


Staff development programs should be initiated through local and foreign
universities collaboration and research facilities should be provided to the
students.

Youth Affairs:

Separate premises should preferably be constructed for the Youth Centers;


Youth Policy should be finalized for the province, which should include a
Provincial Internship Program.

The hard copies of the presentation were shared with the participants and they were
requested to come up with more suggestions, if any, for the next meeting, which was
fixed for 24th September at 11.00 a.m. at the same venue to finalize the
recommendations.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks from the chair.
