CASE ANALYSIS: TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE PIGEONHOLE

I.

Statement of the Problem

- Major: Jenny Lo wants to transfer to the marketing division, but this desire
of hers is hindered by her team leader and the brand management
directors opinion that Jenny is best suited to keep doing technical work for
the company.
- Minor: Los salary is already a little too high for an entry-level position in
the marketing group

II.

Statement of Objectives
- To come up with a course of action that will improve Jenny Los job
satisfaction in the long run

III.

Areas of Consideration
- Jenny Los apprehension of her career path particularly her appeal to work
in brand management
- Stereotyping made by her team leader and the brand management
director
- Her preference to engage in work that was more dependent upon soft
skills
- Jenny Los financial compensation

IV.

Alternative Courses of Action

- To stay in the technical department of the company
- To venture into the companys brand management sector
- To leave the company and find employment under the marketing track in
another establishment

V.

Selection of Alternatives
- To stay in the technical department of the company
Advantage(s):
a. She has already established herself among their department
b. Likewise, her current salary is quite high enough
c. The company sees her as a strong contributor which might lead to
promotions and more incentives
Disadvantage(s):
a. She might experience discontent in her job and lose motivation to
perform well
b. She might lose the chance to fulfill her career aspirations
-

To venture into the companys brand management sector

Advantage(s):
a. She may achieve higher job satisfaction working under the career
path in which she is really interested

Disadvantage(s):

a. It will take some time for her to learn the things she needs to know
about her new position
b. Since she is transferring to an entry-level position, her salary might
drastically decrease
c. It might cause conflict with her former team mates
d. She may not get accepted since the director herself found it better
for Jenny to stay under the technical team
To leave the company and find employment under the marketing track in
another establishment
Advantage(s):
a. She might find a company that will recognize her potential for brand
management or any other job under a similar field
Disadvantage(s):
a. She will need to adjust to a new environment and with a new group
of people
b. Since she does not have any formal marketing background, it may
be harder to get employed under a marketing position

VI.

Conclusion
- Weighing the pros and cons, I conclude that Plan A is the best course of
action.
