Let Jesus Nourish Our Spirit

hen Jesus said, I am the bread

of life. Whoever comes to me will
never be hungry, and whoever
believes in me will never be thirsty, He is
telling us that He will sustain and nourish
our spirit. That in listening and living

to what Jesus teaches us, we are being

replenished in our spiritual hunger. It is
only through Jesus that our spirit can be
fed. Jesus wants us to live happily through
a deeper relationship with Him. We are
called to eat the food that is spiritual which

would nourish our souls. Jesus tells us to

work for food that endures forever, to have
faith and to trust Him and His works.
While alive, we are to work to sustain
our daily needs for our well-being. Our
strength and capabilities can give us
provisions for our daily needs.
Our work will enable us to support
ourselves and live independent lives.
We must strive not to be a burden
to other people by continuously
begging for mercy from them. We
need to maintain our discipline, selfesteem and self-respect.
As normal and able human
beings, we should be ashamed to
be dependents or parasite to those
who work hard to earn a living. Look
around, even those with disabilities
try their very best to live and try hard
to have a life just like the normal
people. Their capabilities do not
hinder them to reach their dreams
and aspirations in life.
As we sustain our physical
well-being, we should also learn to
balance it by sustaining our spiritual
needs. We will be incomplete if our
spirituality is not nurtured. There
would be something hollow inside us.
When we are nourished spiritually,
we learn to see and track the right
path, grow stronger in our faith and
develop a deeper relationship with
God. We will have a stronger faith,
one that will not be easily uprooted.
Following Christ is not hard as
it may seem. We just need an open
mind and a strong and lively faith.
We nourish our spirit if we learn to
embrace and love Jesus, the Bread of
Life.

binunyagan sang sa Ministeryal nga
Pagkapari sang mga naordenahan kag
sila nga duha nagaserbisyo sa isa kag isa
para sa kaayohan sang tanan, ano gid iya
ang doktrina nahanungod sa Ministeryal
nga Pagkapari?
Amo ini ang akon hatagan sing
atensyon sa sini nga isyu.
Sa sulod sang nagligad nga mga dinagon sa maragtas sang Simbahan, lainlain
nga mga panan-awan ang ginpatungod
sa naordenahan nga pagkapari. Sang
una, antes ang Ikaduha nga Konsilyo
sang Batikano, ang imahen sang pari
dira napatungod sa iya sagrado ukon
pangsimbahan nga bulohaton. Ini nga
imahen sang pari nagpahamulag sa iya sa
iban nga mga sektor sang Simbahan; ang
pari nahimo nga isa ka tawo nga lain sang
sa iban, isa ka persona nga may pinasahi
nga gahom gahom nga dira ginahikot sa
pag-administrar sang mga sakramento,

St. John Mary Vianney, Universal Patron of Priests

opularly known as the Cure d Ars,

St. John Mary Vianney, or St. Jean
Baptiste Marie Vianney, was known
for his priestly and pastoral work in his
parish of Ars, and the radical spiritual
transformation of the community and
its surroundings. Catholics attribute
this to his saintly life, mortification, his
persevering ministry in the Sacrament
of Confession, and his ardent devotion
to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to Saint
Philomena, from whom he attributed his
cure from an illness in 1843.
Vianney had the gifts of discernment of
spirits, prophecy, hidden knowledge, and
of working miracles. He was tormented by
evil spirits, especially when he tried to get
his two to three hours of sleep each night.
He was born on 8 May 1786, in the
French town of Dardilly, and was baptized
the on the same day. His parents, Matthieu
Vianney and Marie Beluze, had six
children; John was the fourth.
At 20, he left their farm to study at
the "presbytery-school" of Abb Balley at
Ecully. Arithmetic, history, geography, and
Latin were taught, which Vianney found
difficult, especially Latin. But because
of his deepest desire to be a priestand
Balley's patiencehe did persevere.
At the major seminary at Lyon,
he was considered too slow. Through

that Vianney's piety was great enough to
compensate for his ignorance, he was able
to continue. On 12 August 1815, he was
ordained priest in the Couvent des Minimes
de Grenoble, celebrating his first Mass the
next day, and was appointed assistant to
Balley in cully. In 1818, he was appointed
parish priest of Ars, a town of 230, where
he founded La Providence, a home for girls.
Vianney became well-known. People
travelled to Ars to consult him and go to
confession. By 1855, pilgrims had reached

20,000 a year. During the last ten years of

his life, he spent 16 to 18 hours a day in the
confessional, his bishop even exempting
him from the annual clergy retreats
because of the long confessional lines. He
would spend 11 to 12 hours a day in the
confessional during winter, and up to 16 in
summer. Vianney also became a Franciscan
contemplative tertiary and received the
French Legion of Honor.
Fr. John Mary Vianney died at the age
of seventy-three on 4 August 1859 at Ars,
France, of natural causes. He was interred
in the basilica of Ars, his funeral presided
by the bishop with three-hundred priests
and more than six-thousand people in
attendance. Declared venerable on 3
October 1874, and blessed on 8 January
1905 by Pope Saint Pius X, he was declared
saint on 31 May 1925 by Pope Pius XI.
When John Paul II visited Ars in 1986
during Vianneys 200th birth anniversary,
he referred to the great saint as a rare
example of a pastor acutely aware of his
responsibilitiesand a sign of courage for
those who today experience the grace of
being called to the priesthood.
In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed
St. John Vianney the Universal Patron of
Priests, describing him "a true example of
a pastor at the service of Christ's flock." His
feast day is on August 4.

2015 CENSUS OF
POPULATION (POPCEN)
We are calling for the cooperation of
everyone as the Philippine Statistics Authority
(PSA) sets the nationwide conduct of the 2015
Census of Population (POPCEN 2015). The PSA
pursuant to Republic Act 10625 or the Philippine
Statistical Act of 2013, is the governments
central agency on civil registration, statistics
and data collection. The agency has been tasked
in the preparation and conduct of nationwide
population counts.
Enumeration is on August 10 to September
6, 2015 in most provinces and may be extended
until end of September 2015 in big cities.
Enumerators wearing official POPCEN 2015
IDs will visit and interview every household to
ask basic information about its members, such
as age, sex, marital status, education, and usual
occupation, if any. The interview will take about
15 to 30 minutes for each household.
The PSA calls for all to cooperate and provide
truthful answers to census questions.

n urgent challenge to protect our

common home is to bring the
whole human family together to
seek a sustainable and integral development,
for we know that things can change - these
are words from the Laudato Si that remained
in my mind during our Parish Pastoral
Secretariat (PPS) Formation last July 21,
2015.
We started our day with a prayer, and Fr.
Mark Lester Senina introduced the Laudato
Si by Pope Francis as a significant part of our
formation. To have a deep understanding
about the book entitled Laudato Si, Fr. Mark
provided us with an overview about this
wonderful creation of our beloved Pope
Francis.
Laudato Si means Praises be to you,
my Lord, and according to Pope Francis, it
may well become one of the most important
sources of Catholic Social Teaching since
its inception with Pope Leo XIIIs Rerum
Novarum in 1891. In the introductory
section, Pope Francis calls the earth our
common home, which is like our sister
and our mother. Pope Francis states that the
encyclical is addressed not only to members
of the Church but is a vehicle to enter into
dialogue with all people who are united by
the same concern.
The encyclical is divided into six
chapters, each examining different aspects
of the rupture between humans and
creation and the prospects for healing this
relationship. The first chapter is entitled
What is Happening to Our Common Home. It
contains notes about the various symptoms

of environmental degradation. The second

chapter is about The Gospel of Creation,
which considers the world the way that
God intended it to be. The third chapter
is The Human Roots of Ecological Crisis.
In the fourth chapter, Integral Ecology,
the encyclical charts a path to recapture
awareness of the interconnectedness
of creation. The fifth chapter, Lines of
Approach and Action, sets out various
international collective actions needed; and
the last chapter, Ecological Education and
Spirituality, invites everyone to make a
difference in small but tangible ways.
This overview about Laudato Si helps

us to have an overview of its knowledge

and wisdom and enables the PPS to have
a positive reflection in dealing with its
content.
Fr. Mark explained the value of this
encyclical especially for us, pastoral workers.
Laudato Si is all about relationships. We must
value our common home by protecting our
familial relationship. We must have positive
relationship with other humans, and for us
not to forget our interconnectedness. God
wants all humans to be good stewards of
the gift of creation. We must praise God by
appreciating our environment because this
is our common home and our future.

Its Archbishop Angels Birthday!

ts been awhile since we came up with an

article about our spiritual leader here in
the Archdiocese of Jaro, none other than
His Grace, Most Rev. Angel N. Lagdameo,
D.D. He has been with us since May 9,
2000 when he was installed as the 12th
Prelate and 5th Archbishop of Jaro here at
the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Metropolitan
Cathedral. This is the appropriate time we
publish once again an article to coincide
with the Archbishops red-letter day.
Just to recall the very colorful
background on the birthday celebrator, the
Archbishop was born on August 2, 1940 in
Lucban, Quezon to Juliana Eleazar Nacorda
and Valentine Rosales Lagdameo. His
schooling includes: Elementary Education
at Rosa Sevilla Memorial School, Espaa,
Manila; Secondary, College, and Theology
Studies at San Jose Seminary, EDSA.
He was ordained Sub-Deacon on May
17; Deacon on September 26; and Priest on
December 19, all in 1964.
The young priest served the Diocese of
Lucena in various capacities, and on June
19, 1980, at the age of 39, he was appointed
Titular Bishop Oreto and Auxillary Bishop
of Cebu. On August 12, 1980, he was
ordained Bishop. In January 31, 1986, he
was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the
Diocese of Dumaguete. On August 2, 1989,
he was installed as the second Bishop of
Dumaguete. By 1992, he convoked the
first Diocesan Synod.

Vic G. Aguisanda
From 1994 to 1998, he was Chairman
of the Office of Laity of The Federation
of Asian Bishops Conferences (FABC);
during his term, he gave conferences
and participated in conventions of the
Catholic Laity in various countries of Asia.
In 1998, he was one of the 17 Bishops
who represented the Catholic Bishops
Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in
the Special Synod for Asia held in Rome.
From 1990 to January 2000, he served
as Chairman of the CBCP Episcopal
Commission for the Laity. He was also the
Chairman of the National Committee for
the Great Jubilee Year 2000.
Within two years under his leadership
as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Jaro,
he convoked and presided over the Third
Diocesan Synod of Jaro in 2002-2005. On
July 9 2005, the good Archbishop was
elected president of the Catholic Bishops
Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), and
was reelected on July 7, 2007 for another
two-year term. Among the various articles
he had published in religious magazines,
include: Kisap Diwa, a compilation of
short homilies in Pilipino; The Bishop of
Cebu, a compilation of short biographies
of all the Bishops of Cebu; Pathways to
the Third Millennium: Great Jubilee Year
2000.
In 2001, he was one of the awardees
of the Asian Catholic Publishers Inc., for
Catholic authors.

On August 19, 2002, he was one of the

recipients of the Medalya ng Karangalan
award in the province of Quezon. In 2010,
his Conferences on the Servant of God,
Bishop Alfredo Ma. A. Obviar was published.
Presently, the Most Rev. Archbishop,
fondly called Angelito by his family and
close friends, on a concurrent capacity
aside from being our 5th Archbishop of Jaro,
also serves as the Global Spiritual Director
of Bukas-Loob sa Dios; Spiritual Director
of The Mother Butler Guild and the World
Apostolate of Fatima. In 2004-2006 and
2010-2012, he also served for two terms
as co-Chairman of the Bishops Businessmens Conference.
To date, the soft spoken and meek
Archbishop, as a retreat facilitator, has
given 79 retreats to priests, 83 to men and
women religious, and 202 to the lay faithful
in different Dioceses.
The Most Rev. Archbishop Lagdameo,
on his 15th year as the longest-serving Jaro
Archdiocese leader, and by the looks of it
and with Gods will and grace, is fit and capable to serve for another 15 years or more.
Archbishop Lagdameo, whose Episcopal Motto is Your Presence O Lord, I Seek,
is celebrating today, August 2, 2015 his 75th
Birthday Anniversary.
Let us include the good Archbishop
in our prayers that he continue to be ever
caring and loving to everyone under his
spiritual care especially the poorest of the
poor in this Year of the Poor, and also to our
priests who are assigned in the many small,
poverty-burden and difficult-to-reach parishes of the Archdiocese.
To Your Grace, from all of us here in
the Parish and National Shrine of Our Lady
of Candles - a very happy, memorable and
holy Birthday.

Father, We Love You!

Today as we celebrate your birthday, we
want you to know Papa, how much we, your
five children love you. We will kiss you now.
Why are there tears in your eyes, Papa? Let me
wipe them. Do not cry. We love you. We hugged
Papa and our youngest brother sat on his lap.
Thank you for coming dear aunties and
uncles
and friends. Be happy and enjoy
with us. The table is ready.
Welcome!
While the world today
is filled with many vices and
conflicts, there are still some
families who live with love and
gratitude in their hearts.
Drug addiction, intensive
smoking,
hold-ups,
murder,
dishonesty, abuse of authority and
road mishaps, seem to invade our
lives and disturb our peace. Good
leaders, pertinent rules and regulations,
cultural activities, entertainments, and
decent competitions seem to be clouded by
disobedience.
This is the time to turn to our Father
in Heaven and make prayer a bridge to His
heart. No matter how busy we are, we must
always give time to prayer. Try to recite the
fifteen mysteries of the Holy Rosary every day

and your heart will grow lighter. If we can

play with the computer for more than one
hour, why cant we give time to prayer? Try
my suggestions and youll find inner peace.
Another devotion that can calm fear is
the devotion to Jesuss Divine Mercy. The
Blood and Water that flow from His heart
can wash away the dirt of sin and the doubt
of faith.
Let us develop the habit of praying
any time anywhere, God always hears. He
listens. He gives if we are not given exactly
what we are praying for, we are given
something which we cannot see and feel.
Prayer is a chain of wisdom. Prayer is a chain
of love. Prayer is a chain that binds us to the
throne of the Most High.
There is a great improvement in the Mass
attendance at the Cathedral; there is more
modesty in the behavior and in the attire of
the Mass-goers. The homilies of our priests
are gaining ground. Examples of Church
leaders are making positive effects.
Let us all pray that through our Masses,
our rosaries and other devotions, this world
will become a better place to live in, and give
a taste of paradise.
May our parents, our elders, our Church
leaders, government officials, our schools,
our commercial entities and our citizens join hands and minds in lifting our hearts
to God, kneeling in front of Him, kissing His
hands and touching His heart.
