COUNSELOR 'S ROLE IN SCHOOL


A role of a counselor must be based on appropriate knowledge of counseling and guidance
so that the counsellor will be to be able to deal with problems at school and managed to turn
the actual functions of guidance and counseling in schools.
i . Helping students to understand themselves in relation to the social world
and psychology at the place where he was . This means helping students to understand
attitudes, interests , talents, abilities , opportunities for self- improvement and
relations between the above .
ii . Helping students to behave in suitable with their talents, interests, attitudes,
ability and opportunity for self-improvement .
iii . Help students to achieve the need to develop the ability to make
their own decisions.
v . Determine or ascertain the influence of the school's program of psychosocial
development studies on students and deliver information to staff and others.
x . Uses or facilitates design resources for community to meet the needs of students who are
extreme or unconventional and outside the responsibility of the school.

Definitions of facilitator
In the context of education , facilitating is the process of deploying a learning activity so that
it could be carried out smoothly .
Keywords: process facilitates an action.
Counsellors role as facilitators
Provide guidance, motivation and mobilizing the pupils in the class to run and pursue
learning activities.
Ensure the use of student -centred teaching strategies and teaching aids centred.

Characteristics of a facilitator within a regular teacher:

Adopt efficient teacher verbal and nonverbal skills.


Expert in questioning skills.
Good leadership skills.
Skills to create a conducive atmosphere during T & L.
Skills to choose appropriate examples.
Can motivate students while performing an activity.
Can guide students in need.

Speaker prepares a paper work based on a topic and presents it to the students.
Speaker Planning skill, collecting data, prepares and presents paper work and
answers any questions.
Students Listener, take notes and ask questions.
Questions and answer session ended with presentation of paper work.
Teacher observing, act as adviser and gives comments.

Forum

A discussion which involves a specialist speaker panel.


A chairman is needed to handle the forum.
Panel gives idea or opinion based on the questions asked by the chairman.
Forum discussion activity is suitable for students who have a lot of experiences and
also have a good speaking skill.
Students are trained to think analytically and critically and also trained to have a high
self-confident.

Buzz session

A discussion that only involves several small groups.


Each small group usually consists of a chairman, a reporter and several members.
Buzz session is held after teacher finishes a topic.
In the process of discussion, group members are encouraged to give out ideas and
opinions about the topic given.
Students will present their ideas and opinions in their respective groups.
Opinions will be agreed among group members and present it to teacher.

Effects on Teaching and Learning Process.

A technique that involves students in group discussion activity.


Teacher can apply questioning skill that enables students to think and help them in
study.
Encourage students to use their own effort in completing any activities or tasks.
Enable them to use verbal and non-verbal skill

Group Dynamic
Refers to social powers that exist in a group.

Refers to the interactions happen between group members including: the effect of
benefits of a group and group members participation.
Can be measure through techniques such as group members functions, group
activity, games and etc.
Refers to the interaction between group members; how they communicate with each
other and also with the facilitator.
So, it also used to measure the effectiveness of a group.
Also refers to the group members feelings towards the group that they are joining.
Thus, it is crucial for facilitator to believe that group members can control the
smoothness of the group session.
In early stage, group members need guidance. It will change throughout the session
when the members feel that they are a team. They will cooperate with each other.
Group members will try to guide the group to achieve their objective until the group
dynamic change.
Group rules are made together with facilitator and group members to strengthen the
basic for group dynamic.
With group rules, group members will know things that they can do and things that
they cannot do during the session.
Functions of Group Dynamic
Form a profitable cooperation in solving life problems.
Decrease workload faster, more efficient and more effective.
Encourage each individual give out his or her opinion, interact with others and have
the same role in community.
