Masters: Ibsen, Grieg & Munch
Visit the places in Norway where the nations three famous artists lived. Start in capital city Oslo, then travel to
picturesque Soerlandet, where both Ibsen and Munch had homes. Continue to Stavanger, the European City of
Culture for 2008, on Norways west coast. Then head to Griegs hometown of Bergen and, finally, the magical
Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord.
Day 1 Departure USA Depart the U.S. for Norway by air.
Day 2 Arrival in Oslo (B, D) Arrive in Oslo. Meet private
coach and tour escort for a panoramic tour of Oslo before
checking in at hotel. Dinner and overnight at a first-class,

Day 3 Oslo (B) After breakfast, meet up with guide and

Day 4 OsloAarsgaardstrandSkienArendal (B, D) Leave
Oslo after breakfast for Aasgaardstrand and Srlandet,
the southern coast of Norway. Aasgaardstrand, near the
Oslofjord, is where Munch painted many famous works. Visit
Munchs summer house, now a museum.
Head farther south to the city of Skien, Ibsens birthplace,
and visit the Henrik Ibsen Museum. Originally a farm called
Venstp, It was Ibsens home from the age of 7 to 15.
Continue to the Arendal, one of Norways biggest seaports in
the 18th and 19th centuries.
Dinner and overnight at a first-class hotel in Arendal.
Day 5 ArendalGrimstadKristiansandStavanger (B)
After breakfast, depart Arendal for charming Grimstad, the
town of poets, where Ibsen once lived. Start with a city
walk through Grimstads cobblestone streets and visit the
Museum of Ibsen, where the author lived and wrote while
an apprentice to the local pharmacist.
Leave Grimstad and head for the west coast of Norway,
driving to the picturesque town of Lillesand and Kristiansand,
a city with a small-town feel. Continue through Mandal,
Flekkefjord and Egersund to Stavanger, Norways fourthlargest city and the European Capital of Culture for 2008.
Also the capital of Norways oil industry, Stavangerhome
to the countrys oldest cathedralis very cosmopolitan.

Day 6 StavangerLofthus (B, D) After breakfast, a threehour tour of Stavanger, taking in the Old Town, which boasts
more than 170 wooden buildings, on foot. Passing its fish
and farmers market, arrive at Stavanger Cathedral, built in
the 12th and 13th centuries. Travel by bus to the Rogaland
Art Museum, whose collection includes Norwegian and
international art from the 19th century on.

Depart Stavanger. Short ferry crossing from Mortavik to


Aarsvaagen and a ride through small villages to Hardanger,
called the Orchard of Norway due to the many fruit trees
in the area. The Ullensvang Hotel is beautifully located
in Lofthus, on the shores of the Srfjord, an arm of the
Hardangerfjord. It was once owned by friends of Grieg, who
stayed there several times. A waterfront cabin built for the
composer in 1877 so he could work undisturbed today can
be found in the hotel garden.
Optional: Evening concert in the cabin of Edvard Grieg.

Day 7 LofthusBergen (B) Leave Lofthus after breakfast and
head for the Sognefjord area. Cross the Hardangerfjord
by ferry and continue to Voss, to catch the train to Myrdal.
Change trains for Flm. The Myrdal-Flm trip, described as
the worlds most beautiful train ride, is famed for magnificent
views of mountains, waterfalls and green valleys. In Flm,
board cruise on the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest
fjord in the world, and the Naeryfjord, a natural UNESCO
World Heritage site. Reboard coach in Gudvangen village
and drive the famous Stalheim Canyon Road en route to
Bergen, Norways second-largest city.
Founded in 1070, Bergenknown as the Gateway to the
Fjordsis home to the well-preserved, 11th century Bryggen
wharf, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Grieg was born
in Bergen in 1843, while Ibsen, who lived in the city for
several years, met his wife Suzannah there.
Overnight at a first-class, centrally located hotel in Bergen.
Day 8 Bergen (B) Enjoy a four-hour, guided city tour of
Bergen, taking in Bryggen Wharf, the 13th century Haakons
Hall castle and romanesque St. Marys Church, the citys
oldest building. Continue on to Bergens outskirts and
Troldhaugen, Griegs home of 22 years. Troldhaugen, where
he composed some of his best-known works, is today a
museum. The tomb of Grieg and his wife Nina lies on the
mountainside facing the lake.
Back in town, view the statue of Ibsen before visiting the
Bergen Art Museum, home to a permanent display of
paintings by Munch. Tour ends at the hotel.
Afternoon free to explore Bergen further.

Oslo in the morning, driving through the town of Hnefoss,
then farther along Lake Krderen and down the Hallingdal
Valley to Gol, a well-known mountain resort. Visit Gols
reconstructed medieval wooden stave church before driving
to Geilo, across the beautiful Hardangervidda mountain
plateau and down the Maabdal Valley to the Eidfjord.
From Eidfjord, continue along the Srfjord, an arm of the
Hardangerfjord, arriving in Hardanger, called the Orchard
of Norway due to the many fruit trees in the area.
The Ullensvang Hotel is beautifully located in Lofthus, on the
shores of the Srfjord, an arm of the Hardangerfjord. It was
once owned by friends of Grieg, who stayed there several
times. A waterfront cabin, built for the composer in 1877 so
he could work undisturbed, was where he found inspiration
for some of his best works, such as Springtime, Holberg
Suite and Peer Gynt Suite. Today, the cabin can be found
in the hotel garden. Each May, the Hardanger Classic Music
Festival is held in honor of Grieg, and musicians from all over
Norway arrive in the Ullensvang region to take part.
