TEST OBJECTIVE
The test objective was to investigate the effectiveness of
two (2) Bradford Derustit Corp. products in removing iron/
iron oxide contamination from stainless steel. To certify the
results, conform to the ASTM A 380.
1. TEST SAMPLES
Bradford Derustit Corp. provided three (3) 4 x 4 x 1/6
stainless steel plates, each plate possessing two (2) parallel
weld beads. Also provided were two products identified:
n
2. CONFIRMATION OF
IRON CONTAMINATION
Corrosion Testing Lab, Inc. deliberately contaminated all
three plates by using a steel wire wheel to power brush the
welds. The presence of iron contamination on each was
confirmed using the Ferroxyl Test by the indication of the blue
color.
3. TEST PROCEDURE
Plate (Ex. A) was left in its as-received (un-cleaned) condition to serve as a control. Plate sample (Ex. B), was cleaned
by immersion in Derustit SS-3 Stainless Steel Cleaner Liquid
for 15 minutes. Plate (Ex. C) was cleaned by applying
Wonder Gel Stainless Steel Pickling Gel, in accordance with
the directions on the bottle, to the side with the weld beads
for 30 minutes. After cleaning, each plate was washed with
cold tap water accompanied by light brushing with a soft
plastic brush, rinsed with deionized water and dried with
warm air.
RESULTS
Cleaning of the iron contaminated plates
with Derustit SS-3 and Wonder Gel removed
all visible traces of iron contamination as
indicated by the Ferroxyl Test showing the
yellow color (Exhibits B and C). Both products conform to the ASTM Std 380.
