1. INTRODUCTION
Aim: For students to experience a realistic the design process and to develop good engineering skills.
Course Objectives: To develop an understanding of:
1. The need for and use of standard drawings in the communication and definition of parts and assemblies to
AS1100.
2. Efficient use of a CAD package.
3. Creativity.
4. The design process from initial idea to finished product.
5. Methods used to analyse designs.
6. Appreciation and analysis of standard components.
7. An understanding of power transmission elements.

ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION
Assignment A: Freehand sketch. To be done during the practical session
Assignment B: Engineering Drawing: Detail and assembly drawing using CAD or by using traditional drafting
methods
Quiz 1: Closed book, short answer quiz based upon the material presented in the lectures
Assignment C: Mechanical Design: Applied forces and stress analysis

Quiz 2: Closed book, short answer quiz based upon the material presented in the lectures
Assignment E: Mechanical Design: Power Transmission Analysis

1. In written form with the returned assessment.
2. In verbal form during the lectures after the assessment has been handed back.

ASSESSMENT GRADING
Final grades in this unit are awarded at levels of HD for High Distinction, DI (previously D) for Distinction, CR for
Credit, PS (previously P) for Pass and FA (previously F) for Fail as defined by University of Sydney Assessment
Policy. Details of the Assessment Policy are available on the Policies website at http://sydney.edu.au/policies .
Standards for grades in individual assessment tasks and the summative method for obtaining a final mark in the

5. STUDY COMMITMENT
Independent Study: Students will be required to do follow on research of material covered in lectures to get a
better understanding.
Tutorial: Two hours tutorial per week. Exercises with tutor assistance based on material covered in lectures.
Laboratory: One hour Computer laboratory (Weeks 1 to 6), assistance available in the use of CAD
