Neighbourhood Update

Brent civic centre

Progress so far at Brent Civic Centre
Progress on the new Civic Centre has changed dramatically
over recent months with the completion of the main
structure and significant progression of the envelope.
Completion of the eight storey concrete frame to the
administration blocks was achieved in April, therefore
allowing the flat roof finishes to be applied to the main
roof slab. The steel roof structure at 7th floor that covers
the main atrium area has also been completed with the
installation of the ETFE pillows ongoing.
Cladding panel installation to the frame is currently being
installed at 8th floor, together with other areas that include
the four external stair cores and Ground floor. Internal
finishes to the office floors includes the installation of
underfloor mechanical and electrical services followed
by raised floors, that commenced in March following
the fixing of window panels to the relevant floor level.
Other internal works include the fit-out of toilet areas and
services to future public areas. Installation of mechanical
and electrical plant to the basement area has been
continually ongoing since Christmas, with plant deliveries
to the roof at 9th floor commencing from June.
Meanwhile progress to the Civic Drum includes completion
of the steel roof at 6th floor followed by the external

cladding and windows up to 5th floor. Works internally

include completion of the high level architectural steelwork
within the Community Hall and the commencement of
mechanical and electrical services to administration floors
and both plantrooms located at 2nd and 5th floors.

Community Update
Childrens Play Area Enhancement
As part of an ongoing commitment to leave a legacy within
the local community as part of the construction process of
the new Brent Civic Centre, we at Skanska have been busy
working with Brent Womens Aid to transform the childrens
play area at one of their centres.
The existing facility was in need of repair
in order to provide the children with a play
area that they could actually use. The Civic
Centre team from Skanska, with the help
of some of their trade contractors from
site, sought to bring the area back to life in
order to make it a garden that would encourage the children
that use the facility to engage and enjoy the outdoor space.
The works included:
Painting concrete fences to brighten up and decorate the
area.
Installing planters to grow plants and vegetables
Building an outdoor pram shed, as currently prams and
buggies are stored within the hallway

Diversity Week
To highlight the multiculturalism of the Borough of Brent a
series of activities were set up on site to showcase the mix of
people we have working at Brent Civic Centre. More than 38
nationalities have worked on site to date and all members
of the team were encouraged to plot where they were from
on a world map to encourage discussion about peoples
backgrounds.
Skanska are committed to employing a diverse work force and
during the week there were visits from various community
groups such as the Female Focus Form from the local College
of North West London to highlight how construction can
appeal to all members of the community.
There was also a visit by Mencap to talk about employment
and learning disabilities. Skanska support Mencap through a
donation made for every Near Miss card submitted from site.

Environment Week
A whole week of activities took place on
site to raise awareness of green issues
relevant to the workforce. This included
talks by the Energy Savings Trust
A Dr Bike session where members of the
workforce could have their bike serviced
for free to encourage cycling to work.
And a football tournament including
teams from Brent Council, The College of North West
London, Street League and Trade Contractor Teams
