Pumphouse 2012 Partnership for West Village Revitalization Moves Forward

A catalyst for change; a vision built for the benefit of all Calgarians.

CALGARY, February 24/CNW/ - On February 24, Pumphouse Theatre Society (PTS) Executive Director Scott
McTavish announced the launch of Pumphouse 2012: a catalyst for change and a social and cultural boon to the
people of Calgary. Central and fundamental to the goals envisioned by Calgary’s West Village revitalization strategy,
the Pumphouse 2012 project focuses on the renovation and expansion of Calgary's historic Pumphouse Theatre.
Architecturally innovative, socially responsible and culturally significant, Pumphouse 2012 will define the creative
voice of the entire new West Village community.

"Pumphouse 2012 is one of those rare transformative projects," commented McTavish. "It’s truly cross-cultural, cross-
discipline and cross-community in nature. Not only will this project deliver on critically needed inner-city mixed-use
infrastructure, but it will provide meaningful and sustainable support for Calgary’s artists and cultural organizations. It
will transform how they create, showcase, and promote their art. Pumphouse 2012 will provide them with tools to
develop their craft, and it will animate a vital inner-city neighborhood."

PTS has formed an exciting and strategic alliance with award-winning Prime Consultant Marshall Tittemore Architects
(MTA) and renowned arts centre designers Proscenium Architecture + Interiors; to bring the proposed Pumphouse
Theatre Cultural Centre to life.

Pumphouse 2012 will be a leading project and cultural anchor for the new West Village. "Our goal is to enhance the
Pumphouse Theatres Society’s mandate to provide affordable and accessible theatre to Calgarians through the
design of a contemporary, thoroughly engaging facility that merges the site’s unique history with the City’s future,"
said Tom Tittemore, Principal of MTA, and strong advocate for the advancement of culture in Calgary. As Chair of
Calgary Public Art Board, Tittemore has contributed significantly to championing the inclusion of culture as the fourth
pillar of The City of Calgary’s triple-bottom line policy benefitting all arts-centered organizations.

The first phase of Pumphouse 2012 will include renovations and upgrades to the two existing theatres (Joyce
Doolittle Theatre and the Victor Mitchell Theatre). A new 150 seat black box theatre will also be added, along with the
incorporation of a business centre for use by non-profit organizations.

Proscenium Principal Hugh Cochlin is equally enthusiastic about his firm's involvement in revitalizing one of Calgary’s
most significant cultural landmarks. "Proscenium's primary focus - and underlying passion - has always been on the
planning and design of facilities for the arts across Western Canada. We're truly excited to be part of a team that will
re-energize and redefine a significant entry point into the Calgary arts scene." Both Proscenium and MTA seek to
enhance form, functionality and scale, while at the same time respecting and preserving the important architectural
heritage of the original Pumphouse structure.
