1. A column section ISHB300 at 63 kg/m with one cover plate 400 mm x 20 mm on either
side is carrying an axial load of 2000 kN inclusive of self weight of base and column.
Design a gusseted base for the column, assuming the allowable bearing pressure on
concrete as 4 N/mm2 and the bending stress in base plate as 185 N/mm2. Draw to scale.

supported? Draw the details of beam?
5. Design the cross section of a welded plate girder for a Uniformly Distributed Load of
80 kN/m. The effective span is 16 m.

4. The principal rafter in a tubular truss carries a load of 180 kN. A tie member meeting at

tie member is 2.5 m. Design the members using Yst 240 Gr steel tubes.

1. A built-up steel column comprising two ISWB 400 Rolled Steel Joists sections with
their webs spaced at 325 mm and connected by 10 mm thick battens, transmits an axial
load of 2000 kN. Safe bearing capacity soil at site = 300 kN/m2. The safe permissible
stress on the concrete bed = 4 N/mm2. Design a suitable foundation for the column
adopting a slab base, and draw to scale
a) Side view of the gusseted base
b) Plan view of the foundation.
3. A column made of 2 ISMC 300 placed face to face at 350 mm outer to outer carries an
axial load of 400 kN. Design a base plate.
4. A diagonal member of a roof carries a maximum axial pull of 300 kN. Design the
section and the connections with a 14 mm gusset plate. The length of the gusset plate
available for marking the connection is 400 mm. Design the lug angle if required. The
steel used is of yield stress of 250 N/mm2.

ends. It carries a uniformly distributed load of 100 kN/m. Use the steel with yield
stress 250 MPa.
