Material 2024 T3

Aluminum alloy 2024 main alloying element is 4.4 % copper, 0.6 %

manganese, and 1.5 % magnesium. It is used in manufacturing the aircraft
part that requires high strength to weight ratio due to its performance in
fatigue resistance. The part has good machinability and surface finish
capabilities but it is not weldable. According to the reference [ccc]The term of
T means Thermally Treated to Produce Stable Tempers other than F. It is
applies to products that are thermally treated, with or without supplementary
strain hardening, to produce stable tempers. The T is always followed by one
or more digits. Details of the material properties are:
1. Physical Properties
a) Density 0.1 lb/in3
2. Mechanical Properties
a) Hardness, Brinell 120 based on 500 kg/10 mm
b) Hardness, Knoop 150 converted from Brinell Hardness
Value
c)

Tension Ultimate Strength 70 ksi

Yield Strength 50 ksi
Percentage of elongation is 18 where the elongation measured over a 2
in. gauge length on 1/16-in.thick sheet-type specimens
Shear Ultimate Strength is 41 ksi
Fatigue Endurance Limit is 20 ksi based on 500,000 cycles of
completely reversed stress using R.R.Moore type of machines and
specimens.
