Write your name on the front page ONLY. DETACH the last page, which contains a set of
formulas for your convenience.
00

Closed book, but one page (8 12 1100 ) of HAND-WRITTEN notes permitted. OK to write
on both sides.
Unless stated otherwise, justify your reasoning clearly to receive any partial credit.
The Fourier series coefficients ak refer to the coefficients in the summation
f (t) =

ak ejk0 t ,

k=

where 0 is the fundamental frequency (in radians per second) of a periodic signal f (t).
You must write your answer in the space provided on the exam paper itself.
Only these answers will be graded. Circle your answers, or write them in the boxes provided.
If space is needed for scratch work, use the backs of previous pages.

Problem Q2.1:
(5 pts each) For parts (a) through (c), plot time t along the horizontal axis and the requested
quantity f (t) along the vertical axis. Be sure to label important values (i.e. the minimum and
maximum values) on the vertical axis.
The notations <e{z} and =m{z} represent taking the real and imaginary part of a complex
number z.
(a) Plot fa (t) = 10<e{ejt } for 0 t 2.

(b) Plot fb (t) = |10ejt | for 0 t 2. (Be sure to notice those magnitude bars!)

(c) Plot fc (t) = |10 cos(t)| for 0 t 2. (Be sure to notice those magnitude bars!)

(d) Find =m{10/(j 33 )}.

Problem Q2.2:
(5 pts each) Simplify each of the following expressions as much as possible. Note that
represents convolution, and represents multiplication.
(a) (t3 step(t)) ((t + 2) (t 3)) =

(b) (t3 step(t)) ((t + 2) (t 3)) =

(c)

d 3
{t step(t 4)} =
dt

(d)

( + 2)d =

Problem Q2.3:

(a) (10 pts) The following plot shows three periods of the periodic signal fa (t) = 12 2 |cos(2 50t)|,
which is an example of a full-wave rectified cosine, which results from taking the absolute
value of a cosine. Notice the period is 10 milliseconds, so the fundamental frequency is 100
Hz, not 50 Hz.

Set up the integral for finding the Fourier series coefficients ak of fa (t) for any integer k,
but do not evaluate the integral (since that would take too long). Although the equation
for fa (t) above contains absolute value bars, your answer should not contain any absolute
value bars.

(b) (10 pts) Suppose we have a signal fb (t) that can be represented by the equation
Z
1
fb (t) =
Fb (j)ejt d,
2
where
Z

Fb (j) =

(5 + t)ejt dt.

Draw a plot of the function fb (t) over the range 10 t 10 seconds.

Problem Q2.4:
For parts (a), (b), and (c), consider a system specified by the input/output relation:
y(t) = AtB1 (f [tC + D])G ,
where f (t) is the input function and y(t) is the output.
Suppose that the parameter D is restricted to be an integer, and furthermore, the parameters
A, B, C, and G are restricted to be positive integers. In the questions below, only focus on the
parameter or parameters that are relevant to the particular property you are being asked about in
that particular question. You do not need to say anything about the parameters that are irrelevant
to that particular property; in particular, we will take off points if you constrain parameters
that do not need to be constrained.
If you need to constrain a parameter to satisfy the stated criterion, give the least restrictive
constraint, i.e. if the system has a particular property for a range of values, be sure to specify
the whole range. This may involve writing things like a = 3, b > 4, and all F , except in youre
case youll write something about a, b, and C in each part.
(a) (5 pts) Describe how the parameters must be constrained to make the system be linear.

(b) (5 pts) Describe how the parameters must be constrained to make the system be time invariant.

(c) (5 pts) Describe how the parameters must be constrained to make the system be causal.

(d) (5 pts; this part is unrelated to the previous parts.) Find the inverse Fourier transform of
F (j) =

1
ej5
9 + j

Problem Q2.5:
(a) (10 pts) Find the fundamental frequency 0 (in radians/sec) and the nonzero Fourier
coefficients ak (i.e., ak for which ak 6= 0) of the signal
f (t) = 4 cos(1300t + /7) + 3 + 12 sin(200t).

(b) (10 pts) Suppose we have a mysterious linear, time-invariant continuous-time system, and
that the system outputs the signal
y1 (t) = 8(t 5)3 e2(t5) step(t 5)
when it is given the input signal
f1 (t) = 4(t 4)2 e2(t4) step(t 4).
Find the output of the system, y2 (t), if the input is
f2 (t) = 12(t 6)2 e2(t6) step(t 6) 4(t 8)2 e2(t8) step(t 8).
(Hint: you do not need to explicitly determine the impulse response of the system to solve
this problem. This is a problem about concepts, not algebra. If you find yourself writing
lines and lines of derivations, take a step back and rethink your approach. This is actually a
very easy problem.)
