TN-MS EC-1 Element Controller Release 13.1

The TN-MS EC-1 Element Controller (EC-1) is a complete network
management application software package, operating at the Element Manager
level of the network management hierarchy. The system can be run on a single
Hewlett Packard workstation, and provides all the facilities needed for the
flexible management of synchronous digital networks based on a number of
Nortel Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) multiplexers:
TN-1X and TN-1X/S (Release 7 and 8).

TN-1C (Release 1 onwards).

TN-1P (Release 2 onwards).

TN-4XE (Release 1 and Release 2.x).

TN-MS EC-1 Release 13.1 allows concurrent access by more than one user.
Each user is presented with a graphical user interface at their display terminal.
The display terminal can be the console of the TN-MS EC-1 Release 13.1
platform itself, or an X-terminal (serviced by the TN-MS EC-1 Release 13.1
platform).
TN-MS EC-1 can be configured to maintain a copy of its configuration on a
second workstation. This standby workstation (either Hot or Warm) can take
over in the event of a failure of the active workstation.
ATTENTION
If a Hot or Warm standby workstation is used to protect the EC-1 platform,
this standby platform must be installed before the EC-1 platform is installed.
On completion of the installation, the system is ready to be configured using
the TN-MS EC-1 Element Controller User Procedures handbook (see
Associated documents on page x).
Note: The TN-MS EC-1 system licence for a single user can be increased
to a multi-user system licence. Please contact Nortel Customer Service

323-1091-202 Release 13.1 Standard

Introduction 1-5

Note: The above hardware was used as standard for Releases 5.1 and 6 of
the TN-MS EC-1 and it is recommended that for Release 13.1 the platform
is upgraded to a B132L or B132L+ platform. However, if the 715/100 is to
be used, an additional CD-ROM drive is required during the installation of
TN-MS EC-1 (PEC code NTQJ07FA). Operating system HP-UX 10.20
(NTQJ01EB) is also required.
Ethernet cards
A second Ethernet card is required on the EC-1 workstation for connecting an
NRM/INM, or to support Hot and Warm standby functionality. The HP B132L
and B132L+ platforms are delivered with such a card installed, but on the
715/100 platform, this must be added. This card can be either of the following:
10BaseT Card (HP25567B + OPT840). This card is used to connect the
second port to the hub unit via RJ45 connectors.

Thick LAN card (HP25567B + OPT740). This card is used to connect the
second port to the thick LAN. If there is a requirement to connect the port
to 10BaseT hub unit, transceiver HP A2671A is inserted in the line.

Examples are given in Figure 2-5 and Figure 2-6. For further information
contact Technical support and information.
Printers
The printer is used to enable printouts from the system. It can be connected
either via the parallel port on the system unit, or as a network printer (see
Appendix A: Installing a printer). The general specification for the printer is
given below:
Parallel Centronics Interface.

4 Mbytes RAM.
Postscript support.

Reconfiguring the printer

The EC-1 writes to the printer in ASCII mode, rather than in PostScript mode
or any proprietary mode. As such, it is dependent on the default printer
configuration. Long lines of text may be truncated, depending on these
settings.
To avoid losing information when using the printer, switch the printers
settings so that it uses either condensed mode or landscape mode. The printer
is reconfigured by changing its settings within UNIX. These are stored in a
file within the /usr/spool/lp/model directory. Consult your printers
documentation to determine which file is used.

TN-MS EC-1 Element Controller Installation Procedures

1-6 Introduction

For example, on a LaserJet printer:

To switch the printer to use condensed mode, locate a line that reads:
pitch="def"

Change this line to read:

pitch="c"

To switch the printer to use landscape mode, locate a line that reads:
orientation="def"

Change this line to read:

orientation="landscape"

For other printers, consult your manufacturers user documentation.

Uninterruptable Power Supply Unit (optional)
An Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) is an optional unit that can be used
to prevent many of the problems associated with the loss of a.c. mains power.
The UPS provides a warning of the failure, and time to enable the System
Engineer to perform backup of files on the TN-MS EC-1 Release 13.1
system.
During normal operations, the a.c. supply is routed through the UPS. Socket
outlets on the UPS provide the a.c. supply for the colour monitor and system
unit. The remaining units for the TN-MS EC-1 System are powered from the
normal a.c. supply.
The a.c supply also operates a battery charger in the UPS to keep a set of
batteries in a fully charged condition. These batteries are used with an inverter
to provide a backup 220/240 V a.c. supply. If there is an a.c. mains supply
failure a warning light is illuminated on the UPS and the 220/240V a.c.
backup supply is provided to the colour monitor and system unit for at least
15 minutes.

Installing DDS1 DAT drivers

The HP B132L and B132L+ platforms use DDS2 DAT drivers by default.
These use current compression technology, which is incompatible with older
systems that use DDS1 drivers. Where there is a requirement for DATs to be
used on the 715/100 platform, DDS1 tape drivers must be installed on the
B132L and B132L+ platforms.
The process for installing DDS1 DAT drivers on the B132L and B132L+
platforms is given in Procedure 3-5. If this facility is not required, this section
of the installation process can be ignored.
Procedure 3-5
Installing DDS1 DAT drivers (B132L and B132L+ only)
Step

Action

Log in as root and open a UNIX window.

Run a scan of devices:

/etc/ioscan

Search for a tape entry, such as:

8/16/5.3.0

tape

HP

The first column of this line is the hardware path. Make a note of this.
4

Establish the required driver as follows:

mksf -H <hardware_path> -b DDS1 /dev/rmt/dds1
For example, using the hardware path described in step 3:
mksf -H 8/16/5.3.0 -b DDS1 /dev/rmt/dds1
end

To create a tape on the B132L or B132L+ platforms using these new drivers,
perform the following procedure:

Changing the default RCA directory

This section describes how to change the default backup directory for the
Remote Central Archive (RCA) operations.
Note 1: All Warm standby platforms contain a remote central archive.
Independent platforms that do not use EC-1 software can also contain a
remote central archive.
Note 2: Only change this file if an RCA is in use, and its default directory
is not correct.
The default directory on the RCA is:
/home/sdhmsusr/sdhms/data/backup/<IP address>/RCA_Dir

This may be changed by editing the following file:

/home/sdhmsusr/sdhms/lib/config.conf

The following line defines the leader element of the default address. That is,
the part of the address that is before the <IP address>. Change this line to
change this element of the address.
BACKUP_PATH_LEADER <leader>

The following line defines the trailer element of the default address. That is,
the part of the address that is after the <IP address>. Change this line to
change this element of the address.
BACKUP_RCA_TRAILER <trailer>

Note: The <IP address> element of the directory structure is mandatory.

For example, to backup to the directory /ec1/<ip_address>/backup, change
the config.conf file as follows:
BACKUP_PATH_LEADER /ec1
BACKUP_RCA_TRAILER backup

Step

Action

Login as System Engineer from the VUE login banner.

Login to TN-MS as System Engineer and select the UNIX Window from the
Main Menu.

crontab -e
This provides the user with a 'vi' editor window, containing the current cron
settings.

Move the cursor down to the line containing:

/home/sdhmsusr/sdhms/bin/remote_arch
In this line, the first two fields identify the minutes and hours at which the
command should be executed. The default entries are "30 6", which refers to
06:30. Archives may be taken at any time during the day, or at a number of
times during the day. For example, replacing the first 2 fields with "0 *" will
cause an archive to be taken every hour, on the hour. Also "0 0,6,12,18" will
cause an archive to be performed every 6 hours (at midnight, 06:00, 12:00,
and 18:00).
More information can be obtained by typing the following from a Unix window:
man crontab
If you need further information on what the fields should be set to for your own
requirements, contact Nortel Support.

To configure the archive time, change the first two fields:

a. Ensure the cursor is at the left most position, on the correct line.
b. Press 'x' to delete the first two fields character by character. Ensure you
delete only the first two fields.
c. Press 'i' to insert, then type the required values for the first two fields.
Ensure they are separated by a space, and do not enter more than two
fields. Also, ensure there is a space after the second field.
d. If the file is correct, press 'Escape', then ':wq' to exit and save the new file.
If the file is incorrect, press 'Escape' then ':q!' to abort the operation, and
leave the file unchanged.

Installing X-terminals

6-

General Information
TN-MS EC-1 Release 13.1 allows concurrent access by more than one user.
Each user is presented with a graphical user interface at their display terminal.
The display terminal can be an X-terminal (serviced by a TN-MS EC-1
platform) or the console of the TN-MS EC-1 Release 13.1 platform.
To enable the X-terminal access, the TN-MS EC-1 Release 13.1 X-terminal
interface software must be loaded on the TN-MS EC-1 Release 13.1 platform.
This section details the procedure for the following:
Installing the X-terminals on initial installation of the TN-MS EC-1.

Adding X-terminals on the TN-MS EC-1.

X-Terminals
An X-terminal allows a user to login to the TN-MS EC-1 platform, and access
the TN-MS EC-1 software, using the X-Windows system. All the software
runs on the TN-MS EC-1 platform, the X-terminal simply provides a display
terminal, mouse, and keyboard.
For an X-terminal to operate it must have its own specialized software
running at the terminal. This software is downloaded from the TN-MS EC-1
platform whenever the X-terminal is switched on.

With the user logged in as root, edit the inetd.sec file with the vi editor as
follows:
vi /usr/adm/inetd.sec

The inetd.sec is displayed. You need now to add an entry for the TFTP (Trivial
File Transfer Program). A TFTP entry may already be present on an existing
line. Ensure that it is on a line by itself. This program is used to download the
Xserver code. This entry must cover the address range of your netstations
and will be similar to the following:
tftp allow 192.30.270.* 18.9.3.1-14
2

Find the line beginning with bootps. This should read:

bootps dgram udp wait root /usr/lbin/bootpd bootpd /etc/bootptab

Amend this line if necessary.

Note: You may need to write the file using the w! command.
3

After making changes to your inetd security file, you must signal /etc/inetd to
reread its configuration files by typing:
/etc/inetd -c

You may see the message:

WARNING: inetd -c returning an error.
4

If this occurs, try to re-run the command manually.

Note: If you have installed the tape while on single-user mode, there is no
need to re-run the command manually. When you reboot the system to return
to multi-user mode, inetd restarts automatically.

Setting auto-logout times

There are two types of auto-logout. These are:
Forced logout - When all users are logged on to the system, forced logout
enables a user of a higher duty class to force a user of a lower duty class to
logout.

Idle logout - This enables the Management system to logout users if they
have not used the system for a predetermined time.

There are two read-only files used to indicate the Forced and Idle Logout
timeouts available to the duty classes. Each of these files contain an entry for
each duty class. The values are the total number of seconds idle time after
which the user is logged out.
Note: If these files do not exist, then auto-logout will be inoperative for all
duty classes. If entries for specific duty classes in the file are absent, then
auto-logout will be inoperative for those duty classes.
CAUTION
Auto-logout times

It is recommended that the System Administrator is consulted

prior to any change to the default values.
