EPA 2010 Emissions Standards

Over time the trucking industry has been asked to
continually improve the Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and
Particulate Matter (PM) output levels of diesel engines
(see Figure 1).
EPA 2010 Requirements:
In 2010, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
mandates a dramatic 83 % reduction in Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)
from the EPA 2007 emissions level of 1.2 g/bhp-hr
to 0.2 g/bhp-hr NOx. Particulate Matter will stay at the
level of 0.01 g/bhp-hr.

Figure 1: Change in Emissions Standards over Time

The Solution:
Freightliner Trucks and our engine partners, Detroit Diesel and Cummins Inc., have worked hard to
meet important new clean air mandates, while maintaining maximum fuel efficiency and engine
performance.
The Particulate Matter output guidelines were satisfied with the addition of the aftertreatment device
in 2007. In 2010, Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) levels will be dropped through the introduction of a
second device, the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst. This is the only way to meet 2010
emissions standards at the tailpipe. Figure 2 outlines the technology progression through emission
Levels - pre- 2007, EPA 2007 and EPA 2010.

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) meets the EPA 2010 by using the existing engine architecture and
diesel particulate filter (DPF), plus SCR hardware, to reduce the NOx emissions to near zero. For this
purpose, SCR uses a reducing agent (Diesel Exhaust Fluid DEF) to convert NOx into nitrogen, water
and tiny amounts of carbon dioxide. Figure 3 shows how an SCR system works:

SCR vs. In-Cylinder EGR

SCR
Permits engine to operate under optimized combustion conditions, producing less soot
Less heat rejection since the internal combustion process can be tuned for higher engine-out NOx levels
 Cleanest available diesel tailpipe emissions
 Proven technology across the globe
The choice of 90% of the industry for 2010 solution
Not changing architecture of engine, no hood or cooling package redesign needed simply adding SCR catalyst, tanks,
lines
How customers are impacted with SCR?
Better fuel efficiency (3-5% better fuel economy than equivalent 2007 engines)
 Less component and engine stress
 Fewer diesel particulate filter regenerations
Fewer regenerations relative to in-cylinder EGR
Improved durability relative to in-cylinder EGR
Expected lower total cost, including maintenance and fuel
End emission product is nitrogen and water
 Better throttle response
Fuel same as today USLD, Same oil CJ-4
Current maintenance intervals will not change (DEF filter will need replacement at approximately 300,000 miles)
With over 600,000 SCR vehicles in operation in Europe and over 10 Million BlueTec* test miles run in the United
States customers can be confident in BlueTec/SCR
DEF will be readily available through truckstops, our dealers and distributors in addition to fleets with central fueling

In-Cylinder EGR
Less efficient combustion process requires greater cooling
 Increased diesel particulate matter (soot)
Increased heat rejection causes the engine to produce more heat
Decreased horsepower for same displacement size engine
Requires increased air flow and cooling capacity
Increased engine complexity with additional turbocharger and EGR cooler
How customers are impacted with in-cylinder EGR?
 Decreased fuel efficiency
Potential increase in active regeneration and fuel burned
Increased complexity in turbo chargers, air supply system, pistons and injectors
Decreased engine durability relative to SCR

Cummins testing of SCR vs. in-cylinder EGR found that:

In-cylinder EGR engines produce condensation in the engine. This severely impacts life to overhaul, reducing it by
20-25%. SCR had no degradation.
In-cylinder EGR results in 50-100 hp loss for the same displacement engine.
 SCR has better throttle response.
SCR has better regenaration cycles than in-cylinder EGR.
SCR provides medium-duty engine a 5-9% fuel economy advantage vs. in-cylinder EGR.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid?
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a clear, non-toxic, biodegradable and non-flammable substance. It is
the reason SCR can offer more efficient combustion through maximized fuel efficiency and higher
oxygen levels.
Urea, a component of DEF, is a mild substance used in skin softening dish soap, tooth
whitening formulas and as a pretzel browning agent
33% Urea concentration in water
DEF has a shelf life of up to 18 months
Weight = 9.2lbs/gallon
Freezing point = 12 F (will require heated tank and injection lines)
It may have a slightly pungent odor similar to ammonia
SCR systems are designed fully compatible to DEFs properties and when used properly, DEF poses
no real hazards.
What happens at freezing temperatures (below 12oF) ?
SCR system is designed to provide heating for the DEF tank and supply lines. Tanks are engine
coolant heated. DEF delivery lines are electrically heated.

Immersion heater using engine coolant to heat urea in cold ambient conditions

DEF will be allowed to freeze when the vehicle is non operational in temperatures below 12 F

Vehicle is fully operational when DEF is frozen vehicle operation will heat urea within
prescribed time in order to allow SCR system to operate

DEF is not damaged or destroyed if it is frozen and is fully usable when thawed

All DEF is purged from transfer lines when the vehicle is shutdown

What happens at temperatures above 85oF?

If exposed to temperatures above 85oF for extended periods of time, DEF becomes less
concentrated; it will still work in the SCR system, but may be consumed more rapidly than normal
What is the availability of the DEF?
DEF will be readily available for customers to purchase. Many major truck stops, distributors and
dealer network will carry DEF through the country.

Tanks & Driving Range
DEF Tank Sizes:
For ease of filling and increase of fill interval to standard maintenance intervals, Freightliner offers 6-,
13- and 23-gallon DEF tanks. The tanks are installed on the left side of the vehicles. Customer
relocation of a DEF tank is available as a custom option.

DEF consumption is expected to be approx. 2%

of fuel consumption dependent on vehicle operation.
That means for 50 gallons of diesel fuel, there will be
approximately 1 gallon consumption of DEF.

Common Misconceptions

Page 75

DEF Common Misconceptions

1. DEF is corrosive, hazardous, and unsafe to handle FALSE
FACT: DEF is a non-toxic, non-polluting and non-flammable
substance. It may have a slightly pungent odor similar to
ammonia, but virtually harmless.
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

Hazards Identification
Urea Solution is not Flammable

First Aid Measures

Wash area thoroughly with soap and water

Fire Fighting Measures

Urea solution is not flammable

Transportation Information
Urea solution is not listed by any US or Canadian transportation
authority as a hazardous material
2. DEF will be difficult to find or purchase FALSE
FACT: OEMs and engine manufacturers are working diligently to ensure DEF will have broad
availability at dealerships, service centers, truck stops and retail outlets. DEF can be purchased in 1
gallon, 2 gallon, 55 gallon drum and 275 gallon IBCs. 275 gallon IBCs will climate controlled, stand
alone dispensing units.

3. Urea becomes toxic at 118F FALSE

FACT: Urea does not become toxic at any temperature
at 122F, DEF will still meet ISO specifications of less than
0.2% ammonia for at least 35 days. At that rate with would take
more than 2 years to reach the ammonia level of household
ammonia which is still not classified as toxic

DEF Common Misconceptions

4. DEF is useless in the cold because it freezes at 12F - FALSE
FACT: DEF freezes at 12F. Heated tanks and lines thaw the DEF well under the time
requirement proposed by the EPA (70 minutes at 0F). DEF does not degrade after multiple
freeze/thaw cycles. If DEF freezes, normal vehicle operation is not inhibited.

5. DEF temperature degradation a major problem FALSE

FACT:

DEF Common Misconceptions

6. If I run out of DEF my truck will not start FALSE
FACT: Under no circumstances will the engine be shutdown due to running the vehicle out of DEF or
putting the improper fluid in the DEF tank (Derates will apply).

The DEF gauge indicates the level of DEF in the tank and has a
series of alerts when the tank is running low

7. EPA2010 and EuroV (2008) are the equivalent emissions levels FALSE
FACT: Even in 2013 Europe will not be required to meet the same level of NOx emissions as
North America in 2010

NOx: 0.2 g/hp-hr

NOx: 0.3 g/hp-hr

PM: 0.01 g/hp-hr
