ASSIGNMENT I
Due Date: Friday Sep 18, 2015
Assignments submitted after this date will attract a penalty of 10% per day. No
assignment that is more than a week late will be accepted.
Assignment I contains two problems and will be marked out of 100% with the first
problem weighing 60%. The detailed marking rubric will be provided separately on
Moodle.
Attach an assignment coversheet available from the EE School Office website and submit to
the assignment box on the side of the School of Electrical Engineering office by the above
deadline. Please ensure that the pages of your assignment are securely fastened, and take a
photocopy of your assignment before submitting.

Question I

Figure 1: CS-CB Amplifier

Consider the CS-CB two-stage amplifier in Figure 1. Use the following component values
RS = 200, R11 = 22k, R21 = 47k, RS1 = 9k, RD1 = 4k, R12 = 22k, R22 = 47k, RC2 =
4k, RE2 = 9k, RL = 10k, C1 = 1F, C2 = 10F, C3 = 1F, C4 = 20F, C5 = 20F. Also use
the transistor parameter values and models provided on page 2 for this question.
a) Draw the DC equivalent circuit of the amplifier in Figure 1, and find the quiescent
currents (ID1 and IC2)?
b) Calculate gm1, gm2 and r1
c) Comment on other possible values of RD1 for Q1 to operate in saturation region and
RC2 for Q2 to operate in forward active region.
For next questions, you may assume that rb=0 and r=
d) Draw the small signal equivalent circuit in a form suitable for low frequency analysis.
e) Calculate the equivalent resistance facing each of the external capacitors (C1 C5)
using short circuit time constant method.
f) Calculate the lower 3dB cut-off frequency for this amplifier.
g) Redraw the small signal equivalent circuit in a form suitable for high frequency
analysis.
h) This circuit demonstrates the miller effect. Briefly describe the miller effect and apply
the miller transformation to the capacitor Cgd.
i) Calculate the equivalent resistance facing each of the internal capacitors using open
circuit time constant method.
j) Calculate the upper 3dB frequency of the amplifier.

Question II
The circuit in Figure 2 is a modified version of the differential amplifier where a resistor RG
is inserted. RG serves as a means of adjusting the gain of the amplifier.
(a) Assuming an ideal operational amplifier, obtain an expression for the gain (Vo/Vid) of
the amplifier.

Figure 2
{Hint: The virtual short circuit at the op-amp input causes the current through the R1
resistors to be (vid/2R1)}
(b) In the non-ideal case, the op-amp has the following DC imperfections:
Input bias current: IB = 80nA at room temperature
Input offset current: Iio = 4nA at room temperature
Input offset voltage: Vio = 2mV at room temperature
Calculate the worst-case output offset voltage at room temperature by first calculating
the output offset voltage due to Vio and then the output offset voltage due to Iio.
