Yus Elite Summer 2015 - Return of the Dope Worksheets

Chemistry Lab 1
Name:

Welcome to Yus Elite where the questions are made up and the points dont matter. Show
all work clearly and in order, and circle your final answers. Justify your answers algebraically
whenever possible; when you do use your calculator, sketch all relevant graphs and write down
all relevant mathematics. If you do not finish during class, please continue at home until you
can fully grasp and understand the material.

1.

(1 point) Review question: Natural Rubidium has an average mass of 85.4678 u and is
85 Rb
composed of two isotopes 85 Rb (mass = 84.9117 u) and 87 Rb. The ratio of atoms of 87 Rb
= 2.591.
Calculate the mass of 87 Rb.

2.

(1 point) Balance the following equation:

C2 H5 OH(l) + O2(g) CO2(g) + H2 O(g)

3.

(1 point) Travelling in space while scouting the United States for the NSA, Batmans
spaceship starts to flood with excess CO2 after excessively breathing due to the scanadlous nature
of his acts. Batman uses lithium hydroxide to remove carbon dioxide from the environment
by forming solid lithium carbonate and water. What mass of gaseous carbon dioxide can be
absorbed by 1.00 kg of lithium hydroxide?

4.

(1 point) Having severe stomach pain, Batman decides its a good idea to eat some baking
soda which neutralizes extra acid in the stomach through the equation
NaHCO3(s) + HCl(aq) NaCl(aq) + H2 O(l) + CO2(aq) .
On the other hand, Robin ate magnesium hydroxide, also known as milk of magnesia:
Mg(OH)2(s) + 2 HCl(aq) 2 H2 O(l) + MgCl2(aq)
Which is more effective as an antacid by gram? Note: Robin will not appear in any of the later
questions, as he ate too much and sadly perished.

5.

(1 point) Nitrogen gas can be prepared by passing gaseous ammonia over solid copper(II)
oxide at high temperatures. The other products of the reaction are solid copper and water
vapor. If a sample containing 18.1 g of NH3 is reacted with 90.4 g of CuO, which is the limiting
reactant? How many grams of N2 will be formed?

6.

(1 point) Methanol (CH3 OH), also called methyl alcohol, is the simplest alcohol. It is used
as a fuel in race cars and is a potential replacement for gasoline. Methanol can be manufactured
by combining gaseous carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Suppose 68.5 kg CO(g) is reacted with
8.60 kg H2 (g). Calculate the theoretical yield of methanol. If 3.57 104 g CH3 OH is actually
produced, what is the percent yield of methanol?

(2 points) The Joker plans to eliminate Iowa, as no one would really notice it missing
anyway. He wants to bulk produce nitric acid by the Ostwald process, a series of four reactions
shown below:
4 NH3 + 5 O2 4 NO + 6 H2 O
2 NO + O2 2 NO2
3 NO2 + H2 O 2 HNO3 + NO
He estimates he needs to produce 1 106 kg of nitric acid to eliminate the five people that live
in Iowa. Assuming 100% yield in each reaction, and assuming the NO in the third step is not
reused, what is the total mass of NH3 he needs?

8. (2 points) The Joker constructed a nerve gas by extracting the souls of little children.
Running out of little children, he wishes to identify the identity of the special compound through
the help of Walter Whites knowledge of chemistry. He combusts 0.157 g of the compound and
produces 0.213 g CO2 and 0.0310 g H2 O. In a different experiment, he found that 0.103 g of the
compound produces 0.0230 g NH3 . What is the empircal formula of the compound?
9.

(3 points) The Joker does not want to pay the bulk producing fee and tries to produce his
own method of making nitric acid. He tries two reactions and sees the following results:
NH3 + O2 NO + H2 O
NH3 + O2 NO2 + H2 O

When he performs this experiment, he notices that 2.00 moles of NH3 and 10.00 moles of O2
react, leaving 6.75 moles of O2 left. Calculate the number of moles of NO left in the product
mixture.

10. (4 points) The Batmans love of potatoes and french fries compels him to defend Iowa.
Hearing that the Joker is planning on using acid, he does his own experiment using Zinc and
Magneisum. He gathers a 10.0 g of zinc and magneisum and pours it with an excess of HCl,
producing 0.5171 g of hydrogen gas. Determine the percent magnesium by mass in the original
mixture.
11.

(5 points) The Joker is experimenting with new gases to make nitric acid. He gathers a
mixture of NH3 and N2 H4 , both of which react with O2 to make NO2 and H2 O. The gaseous
mixture (with an initial mass of 61.00 g) is reacted with 10.00 moles of O2 . After the reaction
completes, 4.062 moles of O2 is left over. Calculate the mass percent of N2 H4 in the original gas
mixture.

12.

(5 points) The Batman wishes to discover what gases Joker is using to construct his
nitric acid. After breaking into the lab and taking a sample, he analyzes it. After interrogating
the scientists, he knows the molar mass to be approximately 32 g/mol and the compound to be
a binary one (consisting of two elements). After burning 1.0736 g of this compound in excess
oxygen, he discovers 1.21 g of water is formed. Determine the formula of this compound.
